The order came in response to a motion from the defense attorneys for Roberto Carlos Muñoz-Guatemala, a man who Ross attempted to apprehend in a separate confrontation in June. After Ross broke a window in Muñoz-Guatemala’s car and fired his Taser, Muñoz-Guatemala drove away and was later convicted of dragging Ross with his car.

Muñoz-Guatemala’s defense attorney Eric Newmark praised the ruling as key to defending the rights of his client, but also important for public understanding of what transpired in the shooting of Good.

“My client is entitled to a full hearing and to review these documents to determine whether there’s any basis for a new trial,” Newmark told The Intercept. “Ultimately, we’re seeking dismissal of the charges against my client. This information is important because it will help me provide a full and complete defense.”

...Previously, a creative design engineer would develop a 3D model of a new car concept. This model would be sent to aerodynamics specialists, who would run physics simulations to determine the coefficient of drag of the proposed car—an important metric for energy efficiency of the vehicle. This simulation phase would take about two weeks, and the aerodynamics engineer would then report the drag coefficient back to the creative designer, possibly with suggested modifications.

Now, GM has trained an in-house large physics model on those simulation results. The AI takes in a 3D car model and outputs a coefficient of drag in a matter of minutes. “We have experts in the aerodynamics and the creative studio now who can sit together and iterate instantly to make decisions [about] our future products,” says Rene Strauss, director of virtual integration engineering at GM...

“What we’re seeing is that actually, these tools are empowering the engineers to be much more efficient,” Tschammer says. “Before, these engineers would spend a lot of time on low added value tasks, whereas now these manual tasks from the past can be automated using these AI models, and the engineers can focus on taking the design decisions at the end of the day. We still need engineers more than ever.”

As a fragile cease-fire takes hold, Iran is sorting through the wreckage from U.S.-Israeli strikes, which have exacted a heavy toll on its civilian infrastructure. The New York Times has verified damage to 22 schools and 17 health care facilities, a fraction of the devastation in the war so far.

The scale of devastation is likely far greater than The Times’s analysis. The Iranian Red Crescent Society, the country’s primary humanitarian relief organization, said on April 2 that at least 763 schools and 316 health care facilities had been damaged or destroyed in the war.

European airports have said jet fuel shortages could hit the summer holiday season, if oil supplies do not start to flow through the strait of Hormuz within the next three weeks.

Airports Council International (ACI) Europe wrote to Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the EU transport commissioner, saying the bloc is three weeks away from shortages.

The warning will raise concerns of a risk of flight or holiday cancellations if the US and Israel’s war on Iran continues. Oil prices have soared since the start of March after Iran effectively closed the strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for exports from the Gulf, in retaliation.

“If the passage through the strait of Hormuz does not resume in any significant and stable way within the next three weeks, systemic jet fuel shortage is set to become a reality for the EU,” the letter said.

Former US envoys who dealt with Iran have said that the US-Israeli attack on Iran and Tehran’s subsequent closure of the strait of Hormuz have given Iran new tools and resolve to resist pressure to shutter its nuclear programme.

Two senior negotiators for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the Obama-era agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear uranium enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief, said the Trump administration’s war had handed Iran a coveted weapon by demonstrating its ability to cut off the strait of Hormuz, an economic chokehold that one negotiator said would help Iran “balance the asymmetry of power” with the US.

“This administration, to say it more politely, cannot unsoil the bed,” said Alan Eyre, a former diplomat who helped negotiate the JCPOA. “There’s no way to get back to the status quo ante before this war started.”

In the seven days after Ansari and Stanton told ICE they would be visiting the facility — members of Congress are allowed to inspect facilities, but ICE policy requires they give seven days’ notice before arriving — the number of detainees began to decrease to some of the lowest numbers the facility had seen all year.

Almost immediately after the inspection, those numbers began to climb again.

The facility, first exclusively reported on by the Arizona Mirror, is a 25,000-square-foot facility at the Mesa-Gateway Airport. It opened in 2010 to little fanfare and can house up to 157 detainees and 79 ICE employees, according to an ICE press release announcing its completion.

It is one of many temporary hold facilities across the country, meant to house detainees for short periods of time before they are shipped to longer-term facilities or removed from the country.

But a Mirror analysis of data of ICE detention records that the Deportation Data Project obtained via the Freedom of Information Act showed that, in some cases, detainees have stayed for longer than the 12 hours ICE has said the facility is meant for.

Newly released data now shows that the facility, which in previous years has stayed below the 157 capacity of the facility, has been surging well above that number — and detainees are staying for longer.

Original project release post here for context: https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/s/H4uS9GlwRJ

As a senior software engineer who’s working hard to build a tool for the self hosting community I’m hoping my post will be received better here, given the r/selfhosted’s new megathread tar pit rule for young projects… I’m reposting the Libre Closet feature update announcement here as I had planned to today on r/selfhosted.

I hope this finds some of the people who expressed interest in the project as we worked really hard to deliver on the requested features.

The intended release post read as the following:

——

First I would like to share gratitude for the warm and supportive reception Libre Closet received when I initially posted about it about a month ago. This really motivated me to take the project seriously.

I’d like to introduce ShoshannaTM who’s joined the project as one of the core maintainers.

Since the first post, we’ve gotten 88 github stars, over 3.1k docker image pulls, 2 community PRs contributed, and many helpful issues filed. We’ve made a point to try to respond to everyone in a timely manner and stay engaged with the budding community growing around this project.

We’ve focused a lot on quality and have taken the time to address bugs with numerous minor version releases.

The features and quality improvements have been made with considerable time, engineering, and intention. While myself and Shoshanna are using copilot to accelerate development, substantial upfront deliberate design was done on our part before any feature development. Additionally, nothing is taken without thorough iteration and human review. This project is not vibe coded. It is engineered and we take much pride in our craft and the quality of our work.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, whether about the development choices we’ve made, or about the product itself. Both of us are excited to continue to build a community around this project.

Key changes in this version include:

  • Background removal for garment images
  • Outfit scheduling calendar, with the ability to plan multiple outfits per day, and mark outfits as worn (future versions could use worn outfit data to tell you which garments you wear most, or perhaps track laundry)
  • An improved outfit builder, which allows you to include as many or few garments as you’d like in a single outfit
  • Total customization flexibility for garment categories

As before we’ve maintained the ease of self hosting and only one docker command is needed to deploy! For everyone already hosting Libre-Closet, you simply need to pull the fresh `latest` image to update to the v0.2.0 release.

`docker run -p 3000:3000 -v wardrobe-data:/data ghcr.io/lazztech/libre-closet:latest`

We can’t wait for everyone to try it out, and we hope you enjoy V0.2.0 of Libre Closet!

L.A. City Councilmember Monica Rodriguez warned this week that Los Angeles could face bankruptcy if it doesn't make an airtight deal with Olympics organizers over how it will be reimbursed for its expenses during the coming 2028 Summer Games.

The Olympics have long been promoted as a "no cost" deal for taxpayers that will be hosted by the city, but funded and orchestrated by private organizing committee LA28.

But a key agreement outlining what city services Los Angeles will provide for the Games – like policing and traffic control – and how the cash-strapped city will be reimbursed for its extra work is now more than six months late.

In a letter to LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover sent Tuesday, Rodriguez warned that if it isn't changed, the current draft agreement could leave L.A. vulnerable to spending hundreds of millions even if LA28 turns a profit.

The story of how Reddit became ensnared in an ICE-related grand jury began early last month, when the company received a request to turn over the name, address, phone number, and other data associated with an account belonging to a user identified in court records as John Doe.

The request was what’s known as an administrative summons or administrative subpoena, a powerful legal tool typically associated with serious crimes such as child trafficking. Under Trump, the subpoenas, which do not require judicial approval, have increasingly become a weapon wielded against opponents of the president’s immigration policies.

While it does not disaggregate ICE’s activities from other law enforcement agencies’ requests, Reddit reports that January to June 2025 marked the highest volume of requests the company has ever received in a single reporting period. Sixty-six percent of the 1,179 requests came from agencies in the U.S., including 423 subpoenas and 27 court orders. Reddit disclosed user data in 82 percent of those cases. While most requests concern child safety, the next highest category of data sought by law enforcement agencies falls into what Reddit lists as “other/unknown investigation types.”

In the John Doe case, Reddit received an initial request on March 4 from an ICE agent in Fairfax, Virginia.

“Failure to comply with this summons will render you liable to proceedings in a U.S. District Court to enforce compliance with this summons as well as other sanctions,” the summons read. “You are requested not to disclose the existence of this summons for an indefinite period of time. Any such disclosure will impede the investigation and thereby interfere with the enforcement of federal law.”

For example, take the price of RE9: Requiem (Deluxe) in comparison to major currencies and notice that it costs LESS than from the Western world: (Why is that the case?)

Country Local Currency in USD in GBP in EUR
Japan ¥9,990 $62.85 £46.80 53,75€
South Korea ₩91,800 $61.90 £46.30 53,15€
China ¥398 $58.30 £43.30 49,70€
India ₹4799 $51.70 £38.50 44,20€
Kazakhstan 29,100₸ $60.95 £45.30 52,15€
Philippines ₱3490 $58.40 £43.50 49,95€
Indonesia Rp 1039000 $60.80 £45.30 52,00€
Vietnam 1690000₫ $64.40 £48.00 55,10€

Now take the exact same game in "Western" money, it costs even MORE :

US UK EU
$79.99 £69.99 79,99€

Like, why is it so expensive? I would say the US one costs more as sales tax isn't accounted for (until checkout) on their store front while that is on both UK & EU store fronts via steam.

“The premises from which we begin are not arbitrary ones, not dogmas, but real premises from which abstraction can only be made in the imagination. They are the real individuals, their activity, and the material conditions of their life, both those which they find already existing and those produced by their activity.”

- Karl Marx, The German Ideology (1845-46)

Marx’s dialectic is misinterpreted, twisted, and vulgarized to this day, 180 years after he first expounded on his method. Marx’s dialectical method has been persistently misunderstood, often through its assimilation to either economic determinism or Hegelian idealism. The passage quoted above establishes the epistemological starting point of the Marxist dialectical method and plainly states its break from the metaphysical method explicated by earlier social science.

From the beginning Marx has made it very clear that he firmly breaks from the interpretivists of the German Philosophical Tradition. Marx says the premises that form the basis of his critique are “the real individuals, their activity, and the material conditions of their life,” yet, critics will still say that Marx was bogged by an incorrect focus on moral abstractions and empty phrase-mongering about “human nature”.

It is important to note that Marx explicitly emphasizes that abstraction is secondary, i.e., it is derived from reality, not imposed upon it. This is a direct inversion of Hegel’s idealism, and it is crucial to understanding dialectical materialism because Marx is often misread and misinterpreted as a reduction of dialectics to Hegel’s thesis-antithesis-synthesis. To quote Engels on this topic: “The mistake lies in the fact that these laws are foisted on nature and history as laws of thought, and not deduced from them.”

Taking material reality as the premises of his critique, Marx’s investigation into social formations led him to conclude that modern (capitalist/bourgeois) society is based on relations of production that arose from earlier societies.

“The totality of these relations of production constitutes the economic structure of society, the real foundation, on which arises a legal and political superstructure and to which correspond definite forms of social consciousness.”

- Karl Marx, A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy (1859), Preface

Here we can see that Marx is not offering a rigid mechanical formula of society based on base/superstructure; he is insisting that social phenomena are relational and must be understood as such, are internal products of dialecticism, and develop historically. Consciousness, politics, economics, and legal systems cannot be explained satisfactorily as autonomous domains and have to be understood as components of a whole.

The dialectical method of Marx is a systematic analysis and critique that rejects isolated explanations. Marx’s method thus avoids both economism and the reductionism characteristic of much pre-Marxian social science.

“Dialectics, so-called objective dialectics, prevails throughout nature, and so-called subjective dialectics, dialectical thinking, is merely the reflection of the motion through contradictions which asserts itself in nature.”

- Friedrich Engels, Anti-Dühring (1877)

Dialectics is not about inventing anything, rather it is about understanding real movement, how change is not accidental, but the natural outcome of internal contradictions. Dialectics, says Engels, can be seen in the natural world. For example, through the process of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. This example is not meant to reduce social development to biological processes, but to illustrate the general dialectical principle of contradiction-driven transformation.

A bacterial population is not a static or homogeneous whole, but contains internal differences that become decisive when material conditions change. The introduction of antibiotics creates a contradiction within the population between susceptible and resistant bacteria. As exposure continues, small quantitative differences in survival and reproduction accumulate until the population undergoes a qualitative transformation: resistance becomes the dominant form and the antibiotic loses its effectiveness. This outcome is not planned or directed, but emerges necessarily from the struggle between opposing tendencies within the system, demonstrating how material contradictions drive development through irreversible qualitative change.

“My dialectic method is not only different from the Hegelian, but is its direct opposite. To Hegel, the life-process of the human brain… is the creator of the real world. With me, on the contrary, the ideal is nothing else than the material world reflected by the human mind.”

- Karl Marx, Capital, Vol. I (1867), Afterword to the Second German Edition

There cannot be a more definitive line drawn between Marx’s and Hegel’s dialectical methods than for Marx to elucidate the inversion of idealist metaphysics into materialist critique. Few passages more clearly articulate the distinction between Marx’s materialist dialectic and Hegel’s idealism than this one.

Marx was always grounded in reality, in real social relations. He was not interested in condemning bourgeois society from a standpoint of morality, but from one of analysis of real movement through history. Marx did not begin with his critique of capitalism, but arrived at it through the application of his dialectical method to existing relations of production as the basis for all others, which just so happened to be capitalist and riddled with internal contradictions.

If Marx’s dialectical method begins from real material premises and proceeds through the analysis of social totality, its defining feature is its capacity to grasp historical movement. Marxism does not treat society as a static arrangement of institutions or norms, but as a developing process structured by internal contradictions. Social formations change not through moral awakening or individual intent, but through tensions that arise necessarily from their material organization.

For Marx, a mode of production generates social relations that initially facilitate its development but eventually come into conflict with the further expansion of productive forces. These contradictions are not imposed from outside the system; they emerge from its normal operation. Dialectical analysis therefore seeks the inner antagonisms of a social order rather than its surface appearances. What appears stable or natural is revealed, through dialectical inquiry, as historically contingent and internally unstable.

This method stands in contrast to empiricist and moralistic explanations of social change. Empiricism fragments social reality into discrete facts without grasping their interrelation, while moralism explains historical development through ethical failure or subjective intent. Both approaches obscure the material sources of social transformation. Dialectical materialism, by contrast, treats contradiction as the motor of development rather than an anomaly to be explained away.

Marx’s analysis of capitalism exemplifies this method. Capitalism is defined not merely by markets or private property, but by a specific social relation between capital and labor. This relation contains a fundamental contradiction: capital depends upon labor as the source of value while simultaneously seeking to reduce labor to a cost. The drive to increase productivity intensifies this contradiction, as the expansion of productive forces undermines the conditions of value production itself. These tensions are not external to capitalism; they arise from its internal logic.

Historical development, in this framework, does not proceed linearly or smoothly. Quantitative changes accumulate unevenly until they produce qualitative transformations in social relations. Crises, ruptures, and reorganizations are therefore not aberrations, but expressions of underlying contradictions reaching their limits. Each social formation must be understood as historically specific, governed by its own internal dynamics and bounded by determinate conditions of existence.

Crucially, Marxist contradiction is not a logical abstraction but a material and social reality. It refers to real antagonisms embedded in relations of production and class structure. Consciousness, ideology, and politics emerge from these contradictions and may act back upon them, but they do not constitute their origin. Dialectical materialism thus grounds historical change in objective social relations while accounting for the mediated role of human activity within them.

Marx’s dialectical method is neither an abstract philosophy nor a moral doctrine. It is a scientific approach that begins from material premises, apprehends society as a structured totality, and explains historical development through internal contradiction. By rejecting both idealist metaphysics and mechanical materialism, Marx establishes a method capable of grasping social reality as a dynamic and historically specific process.

This method grounds Marx’s critique of capitalism. Capitalism is not condemned from an external ethical standpoint, but analyzed immanently according to its own laws of motion. The antagonism between capital and labor, the compulsion to expand productivity at the expense of value production, and the recurrence of crisis are not accidental distortions but necessary expressions of capitalist social relations. Dialectical critique thus reveals capitalism as historically limited and internally unstable, rather than morally deficient.

Historical necessity, in this framework, does not imply inevitability. It names the constraints imposed by material conditions on social development and the tendencies that arise from them. Capitalism generates contradictions that undermine its own reproduction, but their resolution depends on concrete struggle rather than automatic progression. Necessity operates through contradiction, and contradiction unfolds through human activity within determinate social relations.

Taken together, Marx’s dialectical method unifies analysis, critique, and historical development without collapsing into determinism or voluntarism. It demonstrates that social formations are neither eternal nor accidental, but historically produced and internally conditioned. In doing so, dialectical materialism provides not a prophecy of the future, but a rigorous framework for understanding the real movement of history and the limits of existing social orders.

I have a great music library on my homelab, but I hardly ever listen to it because I mostly listen to music on my TV.

I occasionally use the Jellyfin app, which is the best player I've found for TV, but it is not really built for audio and is cumbersome for searching, on-the-fly playlist, and continuous play.

Other apps I've tried are either worse in terms of features, or an absolute labyrinth to navigate with a remote. Most apps are designed for mobile and are somewhat to completely broken on TV, if they run at all.

I don't mind if the app is not free as long as it works well enough for my family to use it, and it connects to the server. I don't mind migrating my library to another service to get it working well on the TV.

Has anyone found an actually good Android TV app for hosted music?
