Ok, this is interesting ๐Ÿ™‚ they also have a learning center thing it says, so maybe I can take the classes/lessons/tutorials they mention.

I just really hope I then figure out the remote connection stuff. That's the one I'm most paranoid about and wanting to figure out

Wouldn't this be insecure? Is that what the reverse proxy thing is for - to keep it safe?

Also, is it possible to make it so the name is simpler? I bought a domain name just in case.

Is there a place I can learn about ports and networking more? Something like Khan Academy but for networking?

[โ€“] Hezaethos@piefed.zip 2 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

ease of use.

I'm a noob at networking.

After trying out Cosmos Cloud (and it not working for the clients), I'm back at square one again. I was going to install Docker Desktop, but I see it warns that it runs on a VM. Will this be a problem when trying to remote connect to certain services, like Mealie or Jellyfin?

Ah, I already nuked everything and started from scratch on Debian... Many thanks tho

[โ€“] Hezaethos@piefed.zip 1 points 1 week ago

No worries - I was just starting to worry myself that Cosmos was routing stuff through their server ๐Ÿ˜… but looking into it more I think they automate Samba

Update: I don't think it worked because I can't access it via localhost. I'll maybe try a bit more later but if it doesn't work I'll just start over like some suggested in my other post and go with a classic Debian installation

[โ€“] Hezaethos@piefed.zip 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'm confused - I was asking if it was possible to run Cosmos Cloud in a VM for easy remote access. I'm not using any external cloud services am I? I'm not paying for anything

yes, so something like nextcloud for example. But also I currently am using the machine to stream Qobuz (we have 2 years free is why) and to run VacuumTube. I also want to set up the Arrstack on it.

So basically for things like Nextcloud or Immich, I was wondering if it would be easier to use Cosmos Cloud on a Debian VM than it would you set it up through Podman, such they don't recommend anyhow

Hello again!

Recently had made a post where y'all helped me out as a noob setting up a server. One comment in particular gave me an idea and now I'm wondering if this would work and would it perhaps be easier to do, since I've had trouble figuring out how to (safely) set up the remote connection stuff.

I installed Fedora Kiinoite on the server/htpc and was learning how to use Podman since I don't want to go through the trouble of using Os-tree.

But it just occurred to - would it work if I used Gnome Boxes to run Cosmos Cloud and run all the services I want to remotely connect to from there? Or would there be an issue since it's a VM? Cosmos Cloud seems to make it easy to securely remotely connect, and it uses containers too.

thanks for all the info! it actually gave me an idea even!

[โ€“] Hezaethos@piefed.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

So I've been looking more into it, as well as what others have said, and currently trying to learn how to use the podman desktop (because immutable distros apparently work different so can't just dnf docker).

As for Zima, the Arr stack wasn't really working for some reason, and I couldn't figure out why

[โ€“] Hezaethos@piefed.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

wait how did Claude help set things up then?

[โ€“] Hezaethos@piefed.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

thank you! I'll try to set up a shopping list program first then to test it. If anyone has any to recommend, I'm willing to hear suggestions!

Hello! I'm new to self hosting and networking stuff. I do use only Linux and have experience with Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, and have settled with Fedora and Bazzite on KDE on the home computers/laptops.

I got a GMKtec NucBox G9 Mini PC Intelยฎ Twin Lake N150 recently and wireless keyboard with touchpad, installed Fedora Kiinoite on it and have so far only added VacuumTube. I don't have much experience with the terminal and I'm not sure what step to do next or how.

What I want to do is set up an Arrstack, and I know I need to put Docker and maybe Portainer? I have no experience with Docker though. I also want to put some basic things I and others can access remotely like a shopping list program, photo backups, period tracker, and DnD software. But I'm very afraid of exposing the server to the internet and it being hacked or such. I know there's something called Tailscale but I'm not sure if that's what I need. And I don't know what order I'm supposed to put any of this.

I've tried searching the internet for guides but haven't really found anything except one that's for Yunohost and it's not really self hosting because they set it up on a cloud. All advice is appreciated. Thank you!

edit: I wanted to add I also want to use this as a htpc and it's connected to the TV, so that's why I want a GUI mostly - because it makes it easier to control from the couch
