MODERATORS

As part of the devs farewell message on their site, they have included malicious code to make each visitor sends 2,000 requests to the dbzer0 servers in an attempt to DDOS and take the instance offline.

Is this why my PC crashed last night?? But I wasn't even on this debulldozer thingy!

Fascists literally cannot help themselves.

[–] oceanwaveswoosh@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

This rant tells me absolutely nothing about what happened except that this man is angry about something. Since you're calling him a fascist, you seem to know what is going on, or have some type of context. What happened?

The author of tesseract hardcoded blacklists that targeted communities, moderator and phrases that were progressive or anti-conservative. These blacklists weren't editable by a user, not publicised, and not documented.

Users then starting posting how it explained why they weren't seeing that content as much. Then some users cried themselves to sleep because they weren't special enough to be in included in the lists. 😭

Do they got called out for supporting fascists, took their toys home, and left a boobie trap on their website while crying to sleep at home alone, or maybe on the streets. I don't know or really care where they are crying.

its effectively a shadowban.

I see. As someone who has been in said communities, I must ask: were all trans and leftist communities blocked, or were only the niche hang-outs of specific individuals blocked? Because in my experience, trans and leftist spaces are rarely what they are named for, and are instead hangout spaces for specific online cliques. "Trans communities" may ban all trans people except 5 individuals, for example, and still call themselves a "trans" community.

You said that "they" got "called out for supporting fascists"? What fascists did they support? Are you saying that the author of the blacklist is a fascist based on his banning trans and leftist communities, or are you saying that they're Trump supporters or something like that?

I'm afraid this is not enough context, my apologies.

No apologies necessary, I know the gist of what's going on but not the details. This looks to be the start of it https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/72685299

I didn't even know what tesseract was last week 😄

NoScript blocks this link, so given the very limited context, I think I'll skip this link for now.

I don't have a link or full context, but it turned out that the dev of tessaract (open source program for fediverse sites, involving at least spam and blocking tools) had a functionality in the program that fetched their own block list from their site. But this blocksite was blocking a huge amount of users, fediverse domains, and anything with any keywords which would be anything political, some porn/sexual terms like Yuri, and lots more. This block was completely invisible the ones running the program and would also give fediverse instances that were blocked a generic failed to connect error instead of saying blocked, preventing the fediverse instances from talking.

Seeing the above, it seems like the dev didn't handle this discovery in any good way either and retaliated but doing this ddos thing.

[–] oceanwaveswoosh@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 58 minutes ago) (1 children)

I see, so he blocked specific keywords, not just specific users?

Thank you for taking the time to provide me this context.

Wow, this went from petty to downright malware by proxy. Real mature.

[–] fake@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 hour ago

Not even by proxy, literally just malware

Am I wrong to empathize at least a little? Ive had crash outs that were pretty bad. I've never ddos'd someone but ive definitely done 2000s forum "psycho ex girlfriend" story post levels of crazy before. In your moment of rejection, nobody else matters, you devalue everyone just for that very small satisfaction of revenge.

[–] Digit@lemmy.wtf 1 points 1 minute ago

Reminds of when I got dumped, and went out with an air rifle and shot a couple birds (would have been 3, but I missed with the last slug I found). Utterly out of character. I wonder (and doubt) if they (at least yet) likewise feel greatest remorse for their weakest moment [of "hurt people hurt people"].

... And reminds of [in Babylon5] when Lennier had a moment of fail, out of character, ran from saving Sheradin, ... and How D'lenn handled it, sympathetic to how we are each susceptible to such moments of fail and we let our worst overtake our better.

Still... another's capacity for such wise sympathy (or empathy), is no excuse for them.

Dear Lord, please grant me this level of pettiness and the presence of mind to wield that pettiness only against those who deserve it. Amen.
