As part of the devs farewell message on their site, they have included malicious code to make each visitor sends 2,000 requests to the dbzer0 servers in an attempt to DDOS and take the instance offline.

One of those things is free, the other costs some money and the last is a social skills issue.
... Mushrooms and grass are free, growing all around... So... presumably you mean you have to pay to be touched?
mushrooms are free if you live in an area where they grow wild.... and can forage for them... and have the equipment to dry them... and can afford to take the time to do all of that....
But most people, overwhelmingly, are not out there foraging/cultivating.... they just buy from someone.
People will give you mushrooms for free if you need them.
If you know the right people, anyway.
