Easiest way is to make sure you're surrounded by other people who are smart and knowledgeable but who don't all agree, and try to figure out why it is that they don't agree. Sometimes someone will just be being stupid for a bit, other times there are some pretty interesting details that you can use to appreciate whatever is being discussed in great depth.
Unfortunately, it is not so much stupidity that interferes with such conversations as much as cognitive dissonance or arguing in bad faith.
