Is this only if your location is the US? Here in the EU I still see Lake Ontario on Google Maps. On OSM I still see "Gulf of Mexico" lol.

Yes. Thats how all these platforms work. Many things have several names that are region specific. If you are in France, you might even see "United States of America" renamed! (Spoiler, it is often translated).

Still shows their colours yet again that they make the change within America, even before the usgs maps.

OSM says Lake Ontario for me. Maybe you're looking at the Gulf of Mexico.
