What's the actual probability that the linux kernel ever gets forked? Would it be possible to see a UZDoom type situation?

Or do I actually need to install OpenBSD flop-pog

The capital is behind Linux, and as long as it fills their use cases theyll keep putting their engineers on it no matter the slop. Though the same was once said of Unix and Windows, and one day Linux plopped up and got big because it solved the problems that they couldn't.

It could end up being BSD, or some ABI-compatible kernel like Asternias. My money is on something that lets users and devs run their software and drivers without complex setup - like what WINE & Proton did for Linux desktop, but even more impactful because the server software that runs the backbone of the internet is where the money is.

I liked the idea behind Redox OS

Redox! That was the one I was trying to remember as I wrote this comment. Especially cool as it has some System76 engineers working on it and porting some of their cosmic desktop iirc

Most likely never unless there's a separate foundation in say China/Russia that matches the millions in funding of the Linux foundation (in the ol' USA) and the amount of engineers and there was a drive to do so. The Linux kernel is intentionally designed to be as unfriendly to fork as possible with GPL symbols and its monolithic design meaning it has to absorb up all the hardware drivers in-tree and be compiled in rather than be installed in userspace. I have no idea why Linus Torvalds thinks anyone can fork Linux other than ultraliberal chauvinism since he knows it's impossible.

China's Huawei has their own OpenEuler but that just seems constrained to enterprises and huawei's own products with HarmonyOS. Only KDE/GNOME on Linux have seriously tried creating an international free desktop.

Under communism we will move our systems over to a microkernel.
