I always have my wife's dog with us and she barks a lot when left alone so we end up using them for that reason. We could use hotels, but I'm not an asshole and I don't want some stranger having to hear that.
Just don't leave your wife alone. Problem solved.

Never too late! Wives can always be trained except if too old, i guess
That's a temporary fix that will certainly turn out worse in the end
