White collar jobs are still jobs. If you have to trade hours of your life to afford the things you need to live you are part of the working class... That's why it's called the working class and not the blue collar class.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

No, we need to divide society so we can keep everyone at each other's throats!

[–] tazeycrazy@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago

White and blue coller also don't make sense in the modern working world. With many tasks in a factory being automated out and many jobs in a business looking more like an office tasks with higher skill sets needed. Manufacturing requires alot more planning and less people on the floor handalling products.

I got news for you buddy: our "fake email job" Tier One and Senior Technical Support agents were still sending emails and taking calls on Labor Day.

Someone had to because I work for an ISP and some of our customers rely on our service to call 911.

You can come back here and tell me their job is "fake" when you can explain how that's unimportant and when you've sat on a phone trying to help a 60 year old Boomer troubleshoot their internet when all they wanna do is chew you out.

And and I know it's "just a meme" but it's a shitty meme that's reinforcing all this "white collar; blue collar" bullshit to divide the Working Class while billionaires work to get rid of Labor Day altogether. Shame on you for perpetuating that.

Anyone who works for a living is part of the working class and bullshit like this only strengthens capitals grip by pitting workers against workers.

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 94 points 4 days ago (1 children)

yup. It's the epstein class we should be guillotining, not each other.

[–] Draegur@lemmy.zip 33 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

the epstein class are the ones who have the biggest fakest "email-jobs".

Don't put workers against workers.

Agreed. Unify, don't divide, everyone who can have the day off should. There's certain positions they have to keep operating but for them they should get time and a half for so.

[–] gastroglizzy@piefed.social 107 points 4 days ago (7 children)

If you punch a clock to pay your bills, you're working class. Don't let them turn us against each other.

[–] VinegarChunks@lemmus.org 13 points 4 days ago (5 children)

So I’m a salaried engineer and can’t be part of the movement?

[–] Elmirador@lemmy.zip 48 points 4 days ago

If you work in order to actually be able to to live, eat, and have shelter, you are working class.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 24 points 4 days ago (3 children)

The double-edged sword of western labor. Your options are:

  • Work hourly and get some middle manager rolling dice to see which hours/days you're scheduled for every week, the day before the timesheet goes out.

  • Work salary and get sucked into late night deployments, lunch meetings, and assorted overtime projects you don't receive pay for.

They catch ya comin' and they catch ya goin'

while the comment stated A => B, you assumed the reciprocal B => A, thus making you wrong : you absolutely can be a salaried engineer and be working class

[–] chunk6235@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago

What makes you think us salary slaves aren't working class? I still have to punch a clock every day to get my salary....

[–] white_nrdy@programming.dev 14 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

I think their point is we should be part of the movement. Although, IMO we should also recognize that there are definitely chose who have it worse

(I say "we" since I'm also a salaried engineer)

If you need to sell your labor for wages to have an income. You are working class. End of story. Does not matter what you work as. Stupid bullshit job. Something depraved. Something charitable. Whatever.

I feel like bourgeois reformists keep dividing the working class into unhelpful and arbitrary lines. Like "lower", "middle" and "upper" class. Or in this case i guess "priviledged" and "unpriviledged" jobs. Social relations are more than your net worth.

I was called a essential worker during COVID and had to work every single day but throughout COVID and all this time post-COVID I haven't gotten a single raise. How can my job be essential but not worth anything?

[–] veni_vedi_veni@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

The job is essential, but you the person who does it are expendable.

In a capitalist system, labor is a commodity privy to supply/demand, and so since any person can fulfill the responsibility, the owners have ample supply of replacements, and you have no leverage over them to get higher compensation.

I see no point in trying to pit us against each other. People with normal desk jobs aren't inherently the problem.

Damn, there are a lot of upsetti comments over a shitpost.

As someone with a fake email job that used to work fast food, I didn't do aaasnnyytthhiinngg on Monday and enjoyed the hell out of it, for my past self's sake.

This has to be the dumbest shit I've seen in a minute.

[–] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 15 points 3 days ago

The warehouse I work at gets Labor Day off every year.

Then the week after they basically have the grill going for 5 days straight for Employee Appreciation Week.

It's pretty nice.

Sometimes.

[–] OneWomanCreamTeam@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Lol "working class jobs"

You mean service industry jobs.

Americans will attack other workers for minor differences in lifestyle rather than attack their boss for failing to provide basic quality of life in exchange for full time work.

Just like the ruling class wants...

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 47 points 4 days ago (11 children)

Office jobs are still jobs. If a business genuinely was wasting vast amounts of money on fake work, then these jobs would be eliminated already. They are gradually being automated away, same as physical labor, but they still exist because they are still important for production.

The target of your ire should not be this or that subsection of the working class, but instead the capitalist class.

Just because our cage is slightly nicer and we get fed slightly better slop doesn't mean we're not in this together.

Most of us are sticking with you ... the real problem is the 1%

I wish it were like Christmas Day, where almost every business is ACTUALLY closed.

I don't celebrate, so this isn't nostalgia for Christmas magic or whatever.

I just like that it's a day that no matter what, for the most part, you're on your own. Forgot to buy groceries? Scrounge the cupboard. Forgot to fill the gas tank? You're staying home. Faucet leaking? Turn off the water, wash your hands in a different sink, call the plumber(or go to the hardware store) tomorrow. Ain't NOTHING getting done today.

It's the only day where the majority of people in areas where the holiday is celebrated, all agree that ain't nobody doing anything that day.

Granted there's lots of caveats. Some businesses are open by choice, some by necessity. I used to work at a nursing home, that's gotta stay open, me and a few coworkers would volunteer to take the holiday shifts.

These days I'm still blue collar, but I do have most big holidays off.

But if you thought some random gas station or grocery store was gonna be open so you can pop in on Christmas? No dice.

Why isn't labour Day that way?

[–] Areexor@feddit.org 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

In Germany it is thanks to labor unions

The international worker's day is a holiday in france, so everyone can go protest (or do whatever at home, but there are usually big protests on may 1st)

The slaughterhouse I work at had Labor Day off and then today they told us we're now gonna be working 6 days a week.

[–] mursejoy@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 days ago

Sounds like time for a union.

[–] Caesium@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago

someone unironically told me yesterday 'you must be so busy with everyone off!'

I WAS busy, nothing changed on my end compared to every other Monday of the year. which is basically I'm given a job that's too much for one person, but I struggle to get help so often than even getting my legally required breaks can be like pulling teeth.

anyway I just said 'except for me! (:' and she didn't say anything else after that.

it's like these people forget that we too are humans working behind the counter. People that are WORKING on LABOR day.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Idk the factory shut down for the holiday, just like every factory I've ever worked in. Yeah I'm an intellectual laborer, but the folks on the floor doing manufacturing also got the day off

it's curious that the US does not observe it in that day since the events that commemorates it happened in Chicago, during a series of protests for a 8 hour work day.

But of course, that is not accident. They put a lot of effort in framing workers' movements as a communist plot. At one point they even instituted a "loyalty day" on 1st of May to counteract any labour movement.

My boss handles everyone a chocolate bar

"Thank you guys for yo hard labor. Happy labor day"

Everyone gotta get back to labor after that.

“Fake email job” meaning “unionised labour” - the whole point of labour day?
