I'm 70 and found Reddit about 7 years ago. Was wonderful. Ended up getting banned probably for commenting on the fat stupid incompetent pedophile rapist Donald Trump. Fuck em. Time to move on.

[–] stevles@aussie.zone 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ah yes, people will come flocking back when you throw even more bullshit ads in

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

just like facebook did, its just filled with AI bots now and their ads are more intrusive too.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 67 points 3 days ago

So, they did everything that users said would kill the site and it... killed the site?

Good thing they already banned or drove out all the top human contributors. There's no one left to say “I told you so.”

[–] puz@piefed.social 25 points 3 days ago (6 children)

only let logged in users use the site

traffic declines

surprised_pikachu.gif

I don't use reddit anymore because but sometimes a relevant thread comes up in a web search. But since they force you to log in they lost even the last bit of my traffic.

[–] SpaghettiMaster@feddit.uk 8 points 3 days ago

Yep, not logging in, that killed off the last bit of usage I had for reddit.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

they dont want lurkers, they want people that logged in. the thing is they ban so many people last year, most became lurkers to protect thier accounts. There is enough old content on reddit you dont really need to login anyways, for question you might have for specific niche, which was og reddit is made for to replace fourms. not the current events slop.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago

I still use the same app to access Lemmy me that I did to access Reddit. There's zero reason for me to go back.

It's been declining for years but I guess they felt that they needed to accelerate things.

It was good. Long long ago. Entertaining. Infuriating. Educational. For the most part civil.

Now its mostly swamp. it's the trump era turd swamp. It's more a cesspool - swamps are great places - trumpville cesspool.

Ending anonymity is 180° out from its starting point. Taken over by corporate it's like everything else they 'buy' - for their profit.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 57 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Reddit is now so far away from what made it great in the beginning that it really isn't even the same site. It just sucks now.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 14 points 3 days ago

its facebook 2.0, just havnt fully become its clone yet. is suspect the next step is eliminating OLD reddit with a few months for logged in users. and then require Facial recognition and valid DL too.

[–] KulunkelBoom@lemmus.org 3 points 2 days ago

Agreed. It's midwest facebook now. Corporate reddit.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 33 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Steve was always going to fuck it up. I recall a incident where he thought it would be cute to directly edit a comment in the database, bypassing the indicator that a comment had been edited after the fact. He never had any kind of good sense.

Fuck reddit and fuck Steve Huffman.

[–] europeancricket@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You are downvoted now for what used to be standard reddit etiquette. That site lost its entire identity. 2 days ago they rolled out age verification in some European countries. So, I naturallt redacted all my posts and comments and left.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

They'll put it back. I did that too and deleted the account, go look now and it's all there. Oddly they left the last things which were very critical so I doubt they even looked at what was there.

[–] Meatwagon@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How did you delete your comments? I'm thinking about doing the same.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

There were scripts that would replaced the text and remove the comment, they don't work anymore after the api fuckery.

You might be able to find one that runs in your browser but it'll be really slow.

[–] europeancricket@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Never had that problem with older accounts. I guess I have to go in there to be permabanned. Shouldn't take more than a comment or two.

he apparently idolizes Musk, so thats whats he aiming for. thats why there have been so many purges, because of musk telling spez to suppress dissent.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

He's a nazi, therefore a sociopathic parasite.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

reddit was never good, it was tolerable at best. The fact that in the early days the jailbait sub was allowed to be one of the biggest on the site and was only pulled after national media attention is really all you need to know to reinforce that belief, though we could also point to so much more.

[–] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago

Maybe Spez should charge a smol fee per search. Then another lil fee when the user clicks a result. Then he could charge a small fee per minute of reading the linked result. Spez sure is smart!

[–] EvilBit@lemmy.world 60 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This comment section is missing a big ol’

"Wait our traffic is down? I know! Let's give people more of what they hate!"

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

Fuck you u/spez and the bots you herd about.

[–] Bruncvik@lemmy.world 43 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Anyone actually uses Reddit search? That thing has been so horribly broken since the very beginning that some of the best subreddits (AskHistorians, for example) openly recommend using a standard search engine with the "site:reddit.com" parameter.

[–] pycorax@lemmy.world 21 points 3 days ago (3 children)

It's depressingly hilarious how awful the search is. I don't think anyone could make a worse search if they tried. Half the time it doesn't even work for exact matches.

[–] teslekova@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 days ago

I didn't think they could make it worse... But apparently they found a way, according to the title of this story. 😄

[–] Corngood@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 days ago

Windows start menu search exists

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Back when I used to visit that site and tried the search, it was pretty much on par with Outlook's search. You couldn't find what you were looking for, basically.

[–] pycorax@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Outlook at least works if the keyword is in the subject line. Reddit search can't even do that.

Idk, I think that even in late stage capitalism demanding constant "growth" when they used to be one of the most visited websites of the entire internet is just delusional.

Keep making it worse, that will surely help. I have a suggestion: how about getting your stupid ban-happy admins under control?

[–] morto@piefed.social 24 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It seems that people running big techs are behaving in a consistently erratic way. There must be something behind it

[–] tias@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 3 days ago

They spend too much time with other people in big tech and lose connection with the people who are the source of their income.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 8 points 3 days ago

all that cocaine and ketamine makes people erratic, or is an alien.

[–] rekabis@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I already successfully block all Reddit ads. I use Old Reddit exclusively, as I cannot stand New Reddit.

So if Old Reddit goes, so do I.

[–] floppybiscuits@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

To me it's already gone since you have to login to use old reddit now

[–] suodrazah@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago

I hope Spez burns alive in a literal sense.

[–] Henryterd@feddit.online 13 points 3 days ago (4 children)

everyone already searches reddit by adding "reddit" to a google search. putting ads in the native search kind of confirms nobody was using it

It's bad now that they increased the ad size in posts. Now you have to scroll more to see the first comment.

[–] solidgrue@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Oh Is it NNN again already?

Reddit's gonna reddit.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

this will make people less likely to click a ad-link. no wonder for the past year they have been going after OF and people who are trying to earn money by directing to thier own site. reddit wasnt getting a piece of the aciton, so they increased thier filter sensitivity every time they do a sweep.
