If it's being held in the US, everyone involved should boycott the fuck outta it.

Don't come here. It's a shithole where the bumblefucks in charge will have you disappeared without legal cause.

If it’s being held in the US

These things are already decided a long time ago. This world cup will be held in North America, the next one in the Mediterranean, and the one after that in Saudi Arabia in 2034.

[–] Solrac@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

While yes, they're decided ages ago, nobody anticipated the mess that is US right now, back then, and I would agree, any self respecting pro-humanity entity would reject this supposed world cup

[–] Corngood@lemmy.ml 44 points 1 day ago

Offer to host the world cup. Freak out when Africans show up.

The Swiss midfielder Breel Embolo was also denied an entry visa last week, but Swiss authorities said they had successfully appealed against the decision.

Of course the one who was born in Cameroon

If you don't want to accept international travellers don't host international events.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Even Jesse Owens got into Germany in 1936

In the Fascism 1.0 era, fascists were not about keeping people out. Quite the opposite. They were about (a) keeping people in (e.g. in Italy) and (b) expanding borders outwards to create lebensraum/spazio vitale and then either forcibly assimilate, expel or ...exterminate.

Keeping people out is a Fascism 2.0 issue.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's because the Nazis were capable of long-term strategic planning.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

I have to vehemently disagree because the Nazis are fucking overrated and don't deserve too much credit. Very little known fact that most people don't realise is that Nazi Germany was on a brink of another economic collapse before invading Poland. In spite of warning from his economic minister at the time, Hitler let government spending balloon because of rearmament and increased public spending including pageantries to distract and awe the public. Hitler did not want to hear any contrarian opinions and sidelined his economic minister. Hitler had to absolutely invade countries to plunder and fund his government. If there was no war, Nazi Germany would have just collapsed on its own.

And lastly, if the Nazis were forward thinking, then why were they shocked when the Allies declared war on them? Hitler was deluded enough to think he could even convince the British to side with him to fight against communism.

Like attacking Moscow in winter?

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 4 points 22 hours ago

C'mon Morty, in and out, 15 minute adventure!

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 28 points 1 day ago

If they're not letting officials enter the country that's not really very promising for the rest of us. I'm not even all that interested in FIFA but I'm considering going to Mexico just out of spite.

The US: We will host the World Cup!

World: ok cool

The US: you gotta get a visa tho. Also we don’t issue visas anymore.

World: wait no that’s not what I-

The US: so WEIRD. None of the other teams showed up. We win by default. 👑

[–] rwrwefwef@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Canada and Mexico will also host some.

Fifa is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications

They are responsible for not having changed venues as soon as it was clear the US was not going to make the world cup a safe event for anyone, from fans, to players, to referees.

They are also responsible for not having dequalified the US when they abused their status as an host country to exclude referees or putting undue hardships on other national teams (especially Iran, but plenty of countries had trouble getting their teams in the US). They are opening the precedent that host countries can tip the scale how much they want without consequences.

It's FIFA. Human rights abuses are just how they operate.

Are you saying Qatar is a sham state that has modern day slavery or am I reading into it too much. /s

Did you really expect better from FIFA?

[–] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 17 points 1 day ago

They used to draw the line at open cheating. I guess they just figured out there's no point on keeping any kind of public appearance of propriety.

Considering the FIFA peace prize, I suspect that Omar is lucky to not attend the shit show. If I wanted to look like an evil overlord, this is the kind of imagery I would use.

[–] bramkaandorp@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Do you mean the people on stage, or the trophy?

Because I am torn on which looks more evil.

[–] mech@feddit.org 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

CBP cited "security concerns" as reason for the denial.
I'd bet money he was refused entry because his first name matches someone on a watch list, maybe Omar al-Bayoumi or, considering the competence level of US immigration officials, even Muhammad Omar.

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

We truly suck as a people.

[–] obvs@lemmy.world 78 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Don't watch.

Boycott the damn thing.

Don't allow the United States to have the win.

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'm hoping my experience of this World Cup is like my experience of this year's Eurovision - I knew it was coming but it's only afterwards that I found out it had already happenned.

[–] magnue@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah I'm actively avoiding this one. I might even see if I can add a filter to adguard to block all mention of it.

[–] mech@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

I'm passively avoiding it.
I have absolutely zero interest this time around.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 1 day ago

Why would you even risk your safety trying to come here? We're a fucking sewer. Stay away.

[–] Vanth@reddthat.com 44 points 1 day ago (1 children)

FIFA should have made up a couple more awards to bribe Trump with.

African countries should boycott FIFA-sponsored events. All countries ahould, really. Hit them where they feel it, in the wallet.

It would be little consolation, but I hope they can adjust the schedule to have Artan referee games in Mexico and Canada still.

Considering how much of the Trump family is involved in gambling websites, I assume they don't want him in the country because they can't bribe him easily.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 69 points 1 day ago (2 children)

No, it's because he's black.

You don't need 5 dimensional conspiracy theory to explain this.

[–] adarza@piefed.ca 40 points 1 day ago (2 children)

you don't even have to look past his first name to know exactly why he was denied entry by this administration.

I think it will be interesting to see the attendance figures from Canada and Mexico versus the Fascist States of America.

Yeah...that checks out. /s
