Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 also did really well by completely sidestepping any movie material and going way back in the past. A movie with a HK-47 like droid would immediately have a super memorable character.

I don't see why disney doesn't just fast forward 100-200 years into the future, leaving plenty of space for a new expanded universe to be written in. I guess their creativity bankruptcy is just that big.
