Nato leaders have informally agreed not to mention the football World Cup to Donald Trump for fear of irritating the US president at a crucial time for the military alliance.

If NATO wasn't a thing, the EU would have needed to create a NATO like defense apparatus internally, and that would have cost them money. Keeping America in was a great way for Europe to keep its defense costs down.

EU doesn't need NATO.
The only enemies we have are the US enemies they create for their own interest.
Our defense costs would be down if we weren't victims of their vulgar mafia protection racket.

According to the spending that EU countries are doing in preparation for an American departure, it seems like the cost of defense is going up.

Well that was a genius plan from the USSA and their vassal sell out EU 'leaders'.
They could never get the EU to pay more than they already did.
And look now, the so-called 'loose cannon' Trump creates an artificial rift with the Greenland BS (The tariffs are an extra bonus) And suddenly our 'leaders' can declare we're on our own and defenseless against an imaginary enemy so we need to buy massively more (US of course) war shit. And fast! And what will happen in 2028?
Some 'respectable' Dem warmonger will become president and just like that we're friends again.
