And the garbage finished taking itself out. Wonderful.

[–] catsarebadpeople@sh.itjust.works 60 points 17 hours ago (3 children)

Don't you understand? Reddit is in DANGER from users NOT BEING LOGGED IN!

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 11 points 14 hours ago

It wants you inside of it

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 hours ago

That's not really what that means, they don't want people scraping reddit, which is much easier on old reddit.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

Think of all the horrible CSAM posts I can flood reddit with while NOT LOGGED IN! They must be in shambles!

[–] trem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 12 hours ago (5 children)

To be fair, the likely reason in this case is AI companies mass-downloading Reddit posts for their training runs. You can't really cache the internet, so from what I understand, every training run they scrape this stuff anew.

For many smaller sites, it's effectively a denial-of-service attack, which is why lots of them have put up this thing:
Anubis bot protection screen

For Reddit, it might just be additional traffic that they have to pay for and which doesn't give them any profit. Although, if Reddit is still as unstable as it was years ago, I also wouldn't be surprised, if they got DoSed by that a few times as well.

You cannot, and never could, post without logging in.

They don't even try to lie effectively. Why in Hell's name would you need to log in to "keep reddit safe" just to lurk?

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 53 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

My only guess is because they want to force AI scrapers to pay for access. And most scrapers probably work best on old.reddit because they keep changing new Reddit’s layout. As a programmer, if you’re going to code something to access a site, (and you don’t want to constantly have to rework it every time they make a small UI update) you’re going to use the version that never changes. So by forcing them to log in, it makes tracking the individual users (and thus, identifying potential unauthorized scraper accounts) easier.

[–] AlteredEgo@lemmy.ml 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

But can't you use very simple agentic AI to constantly update the code for web scrapers on new reddit? From what I understand that is the kind of coding LLM can do well and you can just unit test for errors and feed it back to the LLM until it works. Even requiring accounts, creation can be automated using LLMs too.

This sounds like it a loosing proposition and will only piss off hardcore users. Not that this would stop them. But I don't think protection from web scrapers is a good explanation. Probably it's just enshittification, forcing users to use their new interface to optimize business metrics. Someone is going to get a bonus because they improved the short sighted metrics.

Cant even read posts on the browser without being interrupted about a minute in saying to use their stupid fucking app. Reddit is trash.

[–] laurenceOfSuburbia@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago

Add " switch to Lemmy" to your reddit profile to drive more migrations.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 10 hours ago

I use uBlock origin to block the pop up, works great

The libredirect front ends are still working, if you need a workaround..

Yeah the level of bullshit from reddit is more than what I'm willing to tolerate so I'm permanently lemmy now. I ran reddit without apps, on firefox but they started blocking that. Every small thing results in a ban and I'm tired of changing accounts. Done.dont need it.

I can change my mac, get a new IP,, get a private VPN but it just doesn't seem worth it anymore to have a normal discussions on reddit without getting banned.

If I have a question - AI now resolves 99% of it. Everything else and discussions - Lemmy is fine and I can use a normal app with no ads

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 2 points 8 hours ago

I wish AI could solve 99% of my questions. Asked it about growing some veg and it told me to plant seeds to a plant that isn't even grown from seed.

if you just want to browse, redlib is amazing, and even more with the libredirect extension on desktop.

[–] sudo@lemmy.today 43 points 21 hours ago (4 children)

or, you know, don't use reddit

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

It is still unfortunately the go-to landing spot for basically any “I’m having an obscure tech issue and only one person posted about this specific error code six years ago” type of search.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 15 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Everybody in here that's saying "don't use Reddit" is either posing, or never has to troubleshoot or research anything.

[–] SethW@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

they're the type that uses reddit the same way they'd use instagram or 9gag so it doesnt have any particularly unique value to them

Porque no los dos? Of course don't feed reddit with content for them to sell, or aimlessly browse the frontpage. If you need information on a niche subject, or refer to something that happened in 2011, don't burden yourself to avoid reddit. Just set yourself to be in read only mode with ad blockers to the max so you get more from them then they get from you.

I got perma banned from Reddit for calling for the.... well, unpleasant things towards p3do$.

[–] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club 3 points 12 hours ago

Telegram the same way. Fuck those assholes

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 40 points 21 hours ago (18 children)

Yeah, fuck Reddit, but there's a lot of good information up there, even if it's currently run by paedophiles. People who were on Twitter before Elon Musk bought it still enjoy their communities even though the site is owned by an AI company that generates CSAM.

STOP

GOING

TO

THE

BAD

SITE

Just quit going there.

[–] darkwing_duck@sh.itjust.works 17 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

That's difficult when searching for discussion relating to technical issues. Even without adding "site:reddit.com" it comes up with higher quality information in comments from like 7 years ago.

[–] lastlybutfirstly@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Ask around on Lemmy. You might be surprised how well the Lemmy algorithm brings the right eyes to your post.

[–] BigTuffAl@lemmy.zip 17 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

lmao why are you clicking on the worst lemmy clone

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 11 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

It still has tons of information that's hard to find anywhere else.
