Canada's PM Carney welcomed the invitation to become the first "associate member" of the European Union, but emphasised that the intent is not to become a full member nor to cede sovereignty.

Even just becoming a schengen country would be huge.

[–] Tm12@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 month ago (6 children)

Guaranteed the Cons will lose their shit over “migrants” if that were in play.

[–] SolacefromSilence@fedia.io 23 points 1 month ago

I was already for it, you didn't need to give me more reasons.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 month ago

Pissing them off is a feature

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago

I'm sure they'd be fine. Afterall, it's never been the European migrants that get their panties in a twist.

[–] alsimoneau@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

They already are

Doesn't help that Canadians have made a solemn vow to never build another house for less than $1M.

[–] palordrolap@fedia.io 2 points 1 month ago

I don't know about that. Europe is white majority so it could well split the right-wing on how acceptable immigration is from those places.

It could even be popcorn-worthy if they start tearing themselves apart over it.

A man can dream, right?

Welcome Canada. Looking forward to do business with Canadians in a respectful and mutually beneficial way.

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

That would be welcome. We're not used to that.

This associated member thing might be the key to the EUs future. The current model is way to bloated, and unanimous decisions have become the Achilles heel of the EU since Putin only has to hijack one government to fuck up everything.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Unanimous consent is intended to discourage countries from Brexit-ing over being a chronic minority member.

If anything, it's worked against foreign influence in the long run, as EU member states have an incentive to spread the love equitably. If leadership was partisan, like in the US, you could easily have a "fuck all those Blue states for voting against me / Red states deserve what they get" situation, which very nearly broke up the ECB in the wake of the '08 financial crisis.

Putin only has to hijack one government

Putin has less pull in Hungary today precisely because Germany and France had to invest resources to win it back in the last election cycle.

If you had a rump Eastern Europe that Western states could piss off with impunity, they'd be awash in Nigel Farrage types by now.

"I don't think the system works."

"How would you have it work?"

"We need a system where the politicians sit down, and discuss the problem. Agree what's in the best interest of all the people, and then do it!"

"That's exactly what we do. The, the trouble is that people don't always agree."

"Well then they should be made to."

You are going down a path I can't follow.

He is actually a leader playing 5d chess...not just talking about it. Very proud to be a Canadian right now. Fuck America and every Trump voter. I hope y'all get the future you voted for...twice.

And to the rest of you Americans...where the fuck are (were) you? Why are you sitting idly somewhere, commenting on a pointless website, when you should be out in the streets making your ancestors proudnof what they fought for?

What a pathetic country. The USA is the laughing stock of the whole world. At this point, your only friends are dictators and criminals.

Wake the fuck up...unless you want to be the cautionary tale taught in schools 50 years from now.

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

why are you talking like PP wasnt just a hot breath away from taking it from carney prior to this mess america did?

the whole reason canada has carney right now IS because of america voting for trump. go have a look again at the ridings. look at the time line. go look at what the NDP nad BLOC had to sacrifice just to keep the canadian version of trump taking power. canada had to relinquish to a two party system just to survive this.

yeah sure you can talk big right now after that deal is done but dont think for a second there wasnt a hard lesson looming here for the average canadian voter who doesnt vote or only ever votes bipartisan.

NDP and BLOC had to squelch their ridings just to save canada. do not ever forget that. Do not ever take that for granted.

It will be interesting to see what they will come up with. I guess they could join single market on similar rules as Norway. No idea why they would need to invent a new name for it though.

[–] Tango@piefed.ca 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

In addition to a trade deal, I'm almost 100% certain that it's gonna be a NATO-esque defence treaty, in anticipation of the USA dismantling NATO like they're constantly talking about.

[–] orbitz@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Unfortunately Canada may be the new Ukraine in the near future if they fully embrace they're fascists. It's good we're finding stronger alliances to cement that we are not a vassal of the US. Maybe it'll even show their citizens that their direction is off, for enough of them to vote against it anyways. Hopefully they'll see it as that and not that Canada is trying to be an enemy. Though know their education has sucked to see those lines.

If any similar are reading, we never wanted to be worse off with the US, they have a government that made us so with no provocation. We want to chill and do our thing like most people. We have never even shown aggression just defensive actions in general.

Heaven forbid someone says no to the orange rapist Fuhrer and he makes a mess for the world. Seriously why can one dude fuck up so much worldwide?

cede sovereignty

Smart move

Also.. ouch

[–] elucubra@sopuli.xyz -3 points 1 month ago (5 children)

says the guy whose king is that of another country.

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Kind of irrelevant. The monarch of Canada is a ceremonial position, and the title is given to the British monarch by custom only. Theoretically, Canada could name whoever they want as king/queen. The only reason we don't is because it would cause a whole lot of bickering for absolutely no benefit.

[–] elucubra@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 month ago

Well, name me!

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 10 points 1 month ago

The King of Canada is the King of Canada.

He also happens to be the King of some other minor countries here and there, but those are separate titles.

[–] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

At least we didn't vote for a king; idiots.

[–] m0darn@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I thought we were an autonomous collective.

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

shit the only reason most Canadians know this is because we've had their faces on our money forever. other than they have zero affect on our daily lives.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Well, not exactly. Some people get angry their faces are on our money and want to change that. Other people get angry that anyone would ever want to remove their faces from our money. While I'm not overly fond of having to see Charlie Sasuagehands's picture on our money, that's more to do with him than the monarchy in general.

[–] potter2010@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Nope.

The King of Canada is the reigning monarch.
