The Ngunnawal people came to Canberra specifically to harvest Bogong moths during the migration as they are a valuable source of protein and fats.

All the people here having a crack at Australian cuisine don’t have a clue. These moths are quite tasty.

A light nutty taste. Very moreish with a bit of salt

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't think the vegans would like that, kill 2000 endangered moths or one hundredth of a cow?

[–] Squirrelsdrivemenuts@lemmy.world 24 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Depends.. if you don't eat meat for environmental reasons insect protein is a good replacement. Also, if the moths are appearing as a plague they don't sound endangered to me.

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 7 points 4 weeks ago

It's their migratory cycle to reproduce, storms blew them into Sydney from the mountains

[–] YoFrodo@lemmy.world 60 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

This is a facebook bs repost. There are no articles from 'authorities' encouraging anyone to eat the moths.

Remember, everything we see on the Internet is totally true. If we find out otherwise, we need to shout it from the mountaintops rather than just rolling out eyes and moving on

[–] alexquiniou@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 weeks ago

The world is a shitpost. Hard to find the truth today.

[–] YoFrodo@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago

Sir, a lot of ppl in these comments seem to have missed that. Just providing context that it is, in fact, not true

[–] Mangoholic@lemmy.ml 28 points 4 weeks ago

The wings totally helped with presentation

[–] skeevy_scallops@feddit.online 24 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

This is only like one degree away from the protein bars in snowpiercer

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 7 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

Wheren’t those actual humans?

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 18 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

You're thinking of Soylent Green

[–] artichokecustard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

in the book it's people, in the movie it's bugs

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

That explains why they announced it with such horror. I never really understood that.

[–] from_D4rkness@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

I feel the same way! My reaction was like "okaayy, that seems resourceful, not horrific to me; but everyone on this train hates it I guess."

eat your bugs

[–] 666dollarfootlong@lemmy.world 13 points 4 weeks ago (3 children)

I've eaten thai-style fried crickets, they really weren't that bad. I think you just have to turst that they indeed are edible, so its easier to think of them as food rather than bugs

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

NOT HELPING

Bro I can barely eat crayfish. They look too much like insects.

[–] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 10 points 4 weeks ago (3 children)

The big problem with eating fried insects is that you need to rinse your mouth with something or the bits stay around. Flour made from insects may be better, but it is 5-10 as much cost, and since it is mostly proteins you would need special recipes for it, I guess.
Most insects probably have similar mouth feel issues.

[–] maxthemummer@lemmus.org 5 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

The words "insects" and "mouth feel" do not belong in the same sentence.

Has anyone ever said "Hey babe let's go to the Australian restaurant tonight"

I don't think Australians even say that.

[–] Technus@lemmy.zip 16 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

I'm guessing Outback Steakhouse doesn't really count lol

[–] scrodumb@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (2 children)

It's a viable placeholder until Australia produces a cuisine good enough.

[–] Technus@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

What, you don't want to go to a restaurant where the only things on the menu are fairy bread and cans of VB?

[–] scrodumb@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 weeks ago

They mass produce Wagyu cattle and yet aren't famous for their steak. (Their Wagyu is my favourite beef too)

I'm not hating or rage bait, I truly believe in their chefs. I want them to get creative.

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

There are some amazing restaurants in Australia

I've had meals here in unassuming places that shit all over wanky Michelin starred spots in New York

You seem ignorant, and yet, somehow proud of it

[–] Noite_Etion@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

There is a lot of cuisine bashing on this site.

-English food is bland.

-German food is just cabbage.

-Scottish cuisine is just deep frying.

It's xenophobic and tiresome.

[–] remotelove@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I wouldn't go so far as to say xenophobic. Ignorance is probably a better description in many cases. It is also ok not to like types of food, or be disgruntled if the only thing to eat was food that was not to your liking.

Xenophobia could absolutely be an issue in some cases, but applying it broadly is a bit harsh.

[–] Noite_Etion@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

I can agree that most people who make jokes about other cultures cuisines are just being a bit ignorant.

But on Lemmy (especially at the moment for some reason) this joke/meme is made pretty much every day, and is becoming less of a one off joke and more of a constant insult to other cultures.

It's just tiresome, lazy and it smacks a bit of xenophobia to me; but I see where you are coming from and agree it may be a bit of an overreaction.

There are incredible restaurants in Australia for sure, but there isn't really a national cuisine identity overall, distinct from the Anglosphere in general. Of course there are some distinctly Australian foods, but the largest category is basically "European dish with some native/local ingredient" - which can be extremely delicious but isn't really that different from e.g. NZ, or even North America, and basically all comes from French and English restaurant culture. Aboriginal food culture isn't really celebrated at all (beyond what I mentioned above) and even the immigrant food cultures which are more beloved (e.g. Greek and Italian) haven't really fused into the mainstream, but are still largely relegated to the "cheap takeaways" category. So idk. On the one hand, you're totally right that you can get awesome food, but I think the criticism stems from a valid place even if the people who parrot it don't really know what they're talking about.

Lord of the Fries is pretty awesome for a fast food place. Good prices, tasty burgers and hot dogs, 100% vegan.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 4 weeks ago

Outback Steakhouse

[–] kestrel7_7@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

There’s an Australian restaurant in my neighborhood (USA). My Australian ex-gf was SHOCKED. They just have like burgers and beers and stuff lol it’s not any different from American bar food.

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 weeks ago

How is 40 billion moths, considered "scarcity"?

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 4 points 4 weeks ago

Are people getting mad at a shitpost? Again?

[–] almost1337@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

It's a different sort of moth to one you might enjoy on a sandwich.

[–] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

Write that down in your copy book.
