Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Everything about CEOs is like a monarchy. Wealth inheritance in business families like the Waltons? Just the capitalism version of royal heirs getting their throne. Presidents? They don't run jackshit ever since money got into politics

America is back in the era of kings, and arguably a worse one

There are stories from a place I visited about how every tine the village lord had a wedding in his family, he invited the whole village to a huge party with free good food and free alcohol for like four days straight

Billionaires don't do this

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Capitalism is, quite literally, the rejuvenation of feudalism.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

You lot really thought you could get away that easily? 😈

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 5 points 1 day ago

The Business Plot coup worked, only with money instead of weapons.

[–] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The French revolution had an answer for this and it's easy to build but we'll need lots more baskets than they did.

[–] deadalus@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Or, and hear me out here, we attach a wood chipper right below where the basket would've been

[–] BananaPeal@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Naw, let's use another French-named device, the trebuchet. I can see it now... CHOP, LAUNCH! CHOP, LAUNCH! CHOP, LAUNCH! So satisfying.

[–] deadalus@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I think a trebuchet would take too long to load tbh

[–] Colonel_Panic_@eviltoast.org 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We can keep them all in stockades while they wait their turn, then we can have some time to mock and jeer, or jeer and mock, if that's your thing.

[–] BananaPeal@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

This is the way.

two trebuchets!

[–] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah i was thinking we might be able to use them as manure to replant everything they destroyed but i can't think of anything that would grow in such low quality, toxic manure and it's not like there's that much brain matter to use for anything else.

I am really disturbed how fast and nonchalant people come up with murder of groups or single people they don't like or have a grudge against. Killing people is always bad, always the wrong solution.

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Humans evolved like that as a survival strategy. Even before agriculture was invented, if someone of the tribe was hoarding resources or being aggressive, there's strong evidence the rest of the tribe grouped up to either shun them completely or beat the offender to death.

Evidently, ignoring that survival strategy has led to a massive host of problems, and progress has only been seen made after violent solutions were done.

France for example improved after the first revolution. Of course, this eventually got worse again, but then more revolutions course corrected. It seems humans require this course correction over multiple times continuously, but as long as its applied, things do improve over time.

Perhaps one day, with enough self corrections, we'll arrive to a point where violence against societal offenders is no longer needed. But until then, the lack of it will unfortunately lead to this worsening.

"Don't like?" "Have a grudge against?"

You're describing the feeling that I might have against someone who double parked their car or a coworker that ate my sandwich

That's not what a billionaire is. A billionaire is a fatal threat to the world who holds enough power to starve entire countries, our own country included. It's not about grudges, it's about lives

We aren't talking about overblown and violent reactions. We are talking about resistance against something that already is overblown and violent

[–] DarkMetatron@feddit.org -2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Killing someone should, if at all, always be the last thing not the first.

The correct way to solve this is by stripping them from their power/money not by killing them.

[–] insanemantis@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

And who's gonna strip them of their power? Oh yeah maybe the government can

But oh no, the billionaires can also strip the government of their power too

They are too closely allied for any change to happen. It's all just talk, it's all just theatre

Change can only happen once the people regain their power, and what worked? Peaceful protests? Picket signs? Yeah sure worked well against ICE and company

Why keep holding up an umbrella against knives falling from the sky when you can go fight the cunt that keeps throwing them off the roof of that building?

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 0 points 1 day ago

We are rapidly approaching the last thing step.

[–] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip -5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Yet I see many comments about chopping heads with a guillotine. Seems pretty violent to me.

[–] insanemantis@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm sorry, but I think that when children get hurt, it just naturally awakens a special kind of rage that I think is justified against whoever's harming them. You're focusing on the wrong thing

[–] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip -4 points 1 day ago

Have a happy massacre.

Long live to Luigi Mangione

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

leave no doubt, the filthy rich and disgustingly powerful care about you as much as you care about the bugs you smash against your windshield.

it's not that they want to kill us. its that they're indifferent to our suffering and inevitable demise as long as they continue reaching their destinations.

now tell me, don't you believe we have a right to protect ourselves against such indifference?

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

it’s not that they want to kill us. its that they’re indifferent to our suffering and inevitable demise as long as they continue reaching their destinations.

They are basically the indifferent beings with limitless power who destroy humanity through indifference from Lovecraftian mythology.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip -1 points 1 day ago

Killing people is always bad, always the wrong solution.

What a stupid fucking take. Is it embarrassing being that dumb?

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 43 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oligarchy

Government by a few, especially by a small faction of persons or families.

[–] Leviathan@fedinsfw.app 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Go figure, there's already a word. /s

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 5 points 2 days ago

I see the sarcasm, but yah definitely not a new term for those just tuning in

Russian oligarchy refers to a political and economic system in which a small group of extremely wealthy individuals, known as oligarchs, hold significant power and influence over the government and economy of Russia. This term often describes the close ties between wealth and political authority that emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

When we think of kings we tend to think of their late medieval/early modern European incarnation, but that was a bit of a historical anomaly—the end stage of a thousand-year-long process of the monarchy being captured by the aristocracy. But the aristocracy was the older institution of the two, and the more malignant.

In ancient times kings were generally opposed to aristocrats, drawing on popular support to curb the natural tendency of the aristocracy to extract so much wealth from the lower classes that violent revolutions would result. (Think the Roman Republic, where wealthy senators were terrified of a popular leader becoming king and eliminating the Senate.)

So it’s not that CEOs are becoming kings—it’s that plutocrats are subverting yet another in a long line of institutions designed to contain them.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Its worse now because by design, its tricky and secretive and they can kill us actively and we can't touch them.

I'll go back to king days when you just needed a group of buddies with some arrows and a plot.

[–] zarathustrad@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The olde money / smart ones stay under the radar, but there are not that many of them and technology is making it hard to stay anonymous.

Sure would be a shame if a bunch of poor people with nothing to lose started looking into those facts more deeply. You know, instead of burning down their own stuff and fighting militarized local law enforcement, go to the source.

Work smarter not harder.

serfdom is unrelated to monarchies.

[–] ZephyrXero@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They detached their power from land, with corporations and stock portfolios replacing their kingdoms

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 1 points 1 day ago

Wait til you hear about holding companies.

[–] myrmidex@belgae.social 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

absolutely true. King is just a label though, for the top of that particular pyramid of power. There's also emperor, caesar/kaiser, pope, CEO, ..., all atop their own pyramids scrambling to make it bigger so they, the figureheads themselves, grow more important. Such silly nonsense.

[–] wangaBanga@feddit.online 3 points 2 days ago

And they're proving that time and time again they don't even know what to do with that kind of power. Utter fucking morons. Why can't they just BE RICH?

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

It was covert before, but definitely still an oligarchy. At least since citizens united.

Great use of the royal "we."
