Your entire profession should be submitting case after case probono but your profession at large is complicit with how things work.

If the courts aren't going to do their job. Why can't you as a lawyer do something without needed a client to pay for it?

There's a reason so many of you are/do become politicians.

If you who are trained to understand laws can't figure out how to hold these motherfucking ghouls accountable then you are as useless as most people's representitives

As Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus once put it very clearly: ''Do not quote laws to men with swords!''.

Your constitution matters only as far as there are men willing to fight to defend it.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 4 points 12 hours ago

The constitution being ignored and broken should be mentioned every time they cover something where that is the case. Many people don't seem to graps this stuff.

He is reminding us that it is important to remember that you can completely support your Country, while condemning the MAGAs who have taken over our government and our country by fraud and force.

MAGA is NOT America. They are an illegally occupying force, and they do not represent Constitutional America. It is Patriotic to speak out against MAGA. This man is a HERO.

It's also ok to NOT support your country when they have a history of this exact thing.

If you have been non-white in the last, oh, 200+ years of this countries existence, then you've been dealing with this exact thing your entire life. Just white folks generally didn't care about it until white people started getting killed.

When and if we fix this thing, it needs to be fixed for ALL the people in the US, not just rich white folk. And that's a tall fucking order from a country that has literally dropped bombs on black people's homes and forced them to at gunpoint to burn to death in the building.

The constitution is the country. Being citizen is accepting living under it and being a patriot is supporting and defending it. Its why its in the military oath. So yeah we should completely support the country but we don't need to be worried about pretty colored cloth or songs and dance.

I'm traveling to Europe this year so I'm working on my Canadian accent.

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 1 points 11 hours ago

Pro tip, don't pretend to be Canadian try another place like South Africa, and as an added bonus if you do a racism Canada will not catch strays.

He has spoken out about his psychopathic government and their followers on an international platform to world media. His speaking out puts his and his family at risk. His employer / firm could let him go and he may struggle to find work. He has jeopordised his future selection for US teams, potentially ending his sporting career. This is significant.

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

He is sticking his neck out for what he believes in and it will likely get cut. I'm sure Fox News. NY Post and Daily Mail will jump all over this to make him out to be some traitor.

[–] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 3 points 22 hours ago

They barely pat the athletes anyways, but yes its still significant.

He's ANTI Rape, Murder, Kidnapping, Theft, Destruction of Property? WHY does he HATE America?

-Republicans!

[–] usualsuspect191@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In fairness, it seems that America now stands for those things so being against them is seemingly anti-America too

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 8 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

No, America does NOT stand for those things, only a small percentage of literal criminals believe that, and they've used their criminal resources to steal our country from us.

We WILL take it back, and this time we will deal appropriately with those criminals in such a way that they will ALWAYS remember it, and hesitate to do it again.

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 2 points 11 hours ago

Yes you are currently being governed by those people but the rest of the world is done with your shit. You will in time re elect evil light again but the world will always be thinking of what you did now under this administration.

The job of a lawyer is to persuade powerful people that he is right.

Well, I'm an IT Geek, as you know... and what's happening in Minnesota is wrong.

If I were a lawyer maybe I could say something about how what's happening in Minnesota is illegal, which I wish this guy had done. It's far too common that something is wrong, while still being legal. It's wrong for grocery stores to throw away perfectly good food rather than donating it to the needy, but they do that and it's legal. It's wrong for garment manufacturers to destroy unsold clothing rather than give it away, but that happens too and it's legal. It's wrong for the cops to lie in an interrogation to try to get someone to confess, but that's also somehow legal.

It would be much more powerful to say "As a lawyer, this is not only wrong, it's completely illegal. Unfortunately Trump controls the justice department, and the Supreme Court can no longer be considered a neutral arbiter of the law. So, it may be that these clearly illegal things will never be punished. But, anybody who has studied the law and is being honest will admit that the Trump admin is breaking the law."

We aren't him, but at least we are supporting his standing up like this. It hopefully encourages others with similar international exposure. He has likely ended his legal and sporting careers now.
