The Republican president has previously referred to fallen American service personnel as “suckers” and “losers.” He has never served in the military, having in fact dodged the Vietnam War draft on five occasions. The last of those owed to a bone spur diagnosis. It’s a condition that usually affects elderly individuals. He was 22 at the time.

Trump has similarly threatened to invade U.S. allies Panama, Canada, Colombia, Mexico, and Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark, a fellow NATO member.

The MAGA president’s growing, campaign-promise-busting appetite for military engagement also comes amid his bitter disappointment at being passed over for last year’s Nobel Peace Prize, despite a concerted public and private push by his allies. It was previously awarded to his Democratic predecessor, President Barack Obama.

In a letter regarding that snub, Trump wrote to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in January that “considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace.”

The Norwegian government is not affiliated with the Nobel Committee, which decides independently to whom it will grant its awards. Trump’s claim to have stopped eight wars remains highly disputed.

I know things are unfolding quickly, but I’ve seen reports of attacks on the Dubai and Kuwait airports. In both cases reports are attributing it to Iran doing it in response to the US/Isreali attacks, but none seem to say why?

So why is Iran targeting them and not the US or Israel? I’m having trouble making it make sense.

BRUSSELS (AP) — How long will it last? Will it grow? What will it mean to us — and to global security overall? Those questions echoed across the Middle East and the planet Saturday as world leaders reacted warily to U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran that may have ended the life of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The building appears to be among many devastated in Trump’s ‘major combat operations’ as long expected attacks arrive

Iran’s parents had just dropped their children off for class on Saturday morning when they found themselves racing back to school gates, as bombs began to fall across the country in a joint US-Israel attack.

At one elementary school, according to Iran’s state-controlled media, they arrived to find devastation. At least 80 children had been killed in the strike on Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab, southern Iran, the IRNA news agency reported, with dozens more unaccounted for.

In one video circulating on social media, purportedly showing the immediate aftermath of the strike, smoke rises from the burnt-out walls, and debris lies spread across the road. Hundreds of onlookers gathered at the site, some in obvious distress. Screams can be heard in the background. The report of the bombing, its death toll and the video’s source could not immediately be independently verified by the Guardian. Persian factchecking service Factnameh was able to cross-reference the video with other photographs of the school site, and concluded that the video was authentic. Reuters said it had also verified the footage as being from the school.

France's President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that a decision by the European Union to provisionally implement the Mercosur trade deal with South America was a "bad surprise". France has led opposition to the deal as farmers fear being undercut by cheaper goods from Brazil and its neighbours.

Removing images

I have meticulously tagged all of my music files on my PC with images as well as all appropriate text info (I use MusicBrainz Picard for this purpose, but most ID3 tagging software works). However, when I loaded these files on the 3DS, the folders took seemingly forever to load, despite 3DS Sound not supporting images. This turned out to be because the 3DS still had to go through these images even though they weren't loaded, so stripping them from the files resulted in far faster load times.

File conversions

Since the 3DS does not support FLAC, I had to convert my music to AAC for it to play. It seems the 3DS, like some iPods, is very picky about the encoder that gets used to create the files. The one I have found most success with is iTunes' converter (used either directly or through Foobar2000, both on Windows). I did manage to use some FFmpeg settings one time that managed to get a consistently playing file with all metadata, however that command has escaped me.

EDIT: Linux encoder support

Did some experimentation after this post and it seems the Fraunhofer AAC encoder is compatible with the 3DS, unlike FFmpeg's default encoder. However, due to licensing restrictions, to use it with FFmpeg requires you to install a version with the encoder enabled, which is usually not provided by most Linux distros. Therefore, the best way I found is to install the fre:ac Flatpak (which includes the FDK AAC encoder), and to strip the images using either FFmpeg or MusicBrainz Picard. Alternatively, on the command line you can use this with the fdkaac tool:

ffmpeg -i input.flac -map 0:a -f caf - | fdkaac - -b 320 -o output.m4a

replacing the file names with what you wish to use. This command also removes all images using the map option, so no further processing is needed.

StreetPass

It's surprisingly active still (at least where I live)! However, in order to use it, you need to specifically add songs to your StreetPass playlist as well as enable it in the menu, which is a step many people skip.

Random other bits and pieces

Tired of the random drums going off whenever you put your 3DS into your pocket? If you tap the icon enough times, you can make it have a crossed out symbol, which disables the button. This also allows you to cycle through a few other sounds.

The 3DS is very picky about folder sizes, so any folders with more than 100 files will only show the first 100 files. If you have big multi disc albums, split them into disc folders.

The interface colour can be changed in the settings menu to any one you choose, and is reflected in all the menus.

If you have folders that take time to load, after the first time you load them, the index stays in memory. This means any subsequent loads before you close the app will be far quicker.

Iran remains one of Russia's most important allies, particularly since the start of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As President Volodymyr Zelensky has said, the Iranian regime "has brought so much evil to Ukraine."

Zelensky met with Pahlavi on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 13, condemning cooperation between Moscow and Tehran.

Tehran supplied Russia early in the war with Shahed-type attack drones, which Moscow later adapted into its own Geran-1 and Geran-2 models for relentless strikes on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.

For the Kremlin, the timing of Iran's crisis couldn't be worse.

Iran struck the world-famous Fairmont hotel in Dubai, setting the hotel alight, as the war launched by the US and Israel on Iran quickly spread to the rest of the Middle East on Saturday.

Residents watched in shock as an Iranian missile hit the five-star hotel in Dubai’s luxurious Palm Jumeirah area. Social media videos showed fires breaking out near the entrance of the hotel, which led to four people being injured.

One resident said that “everyone is very scared” as the situation in Dubai continued to deteriorate.

“There is footage of missile interceptions all over the city,” they said. “I am packing a suitcase just in case … not that we can leave, because airspace is closed. It is the thing we have all been frightened about happening, and now it has.”

For a hobby of mine, there's an outdated lore wiki on Fandom. I dislike Fandom and would like to host an alternative. It's supposed to be accessible to all kinds of people.

I started with mediawiki as that's what Fandom and Wikipedia are using, so people would be familiar with page structures at least and maybe the editor.

It turned out to be a bit of a pain though. It only has unofficial container images, the documentation is outdated and (what I consider as) core functionality like WYSIWYG editor or simple infoboxes has to be added by extensions or templates. I'm in the process of setting it all up and wondering if it's worth it (and if I want to maintain it). There's so many wiki projects it's hard to keep track, what are y'all using for stuff that's used by larger communities and simple to use with close-to-default settings?
