I don't even know why she did this, maybe she really did misinterpret or maybe she made this up for whatever reason. I have dealt with some really interesting teachers in middle school and in sophomore year.

This teacher either left or got fired, but the bell rang. I (skipped kindergarten, was 14 years old) was talking about watching a movie with my friend.

All of a sudden, the teacher told me to come see her before we walked to the buses.

She said she heard me say that I was going to "talk to my 19-year-old boyfriend Russell" and that she was worried about me.

She then said she looked through my phone, as I left my backpack in the special education room, and she said she saw a contact named "Russell" (I do not have a contact named that).

She then called my parents and my aunt and uncle found out because my dad told them.

My aunt never really liked me, but she wouldn't stop talking about how the teacher never lies and that I probably do have a 19-year-old boyfriend.

I never spoke to any 19-year-olds named Russell, or any 19-year-olds at that, or any Russells, let alone date any.

I don't mean only the US but in much of the world: in many European countries the populist far right is unseating Christian-Democratic parties (conservative parties), like in Hungary, Slovakia or Czechia. In others like Germany or France the far right is at the gates of power, in the UK, Reform UK is running high in the polls. In Turkey autocratic Erdogan is copying the Putin playbook to systematically dismantle the social-democratic opposition. In Japan, a neo Thatcherite that doesn't hide she honors Japanese war criminals is about to become the new PM.

Something common I see in all these parties is strong disaffection with the current state of their countries and a longing to an idealized past they promise to bring back, to make countries great again...

Except that societies have changed beyond recognition in the last 40 years, emerging China, India, Mexico and a myriad of south east Asian countries can produce cheaper than us in the developed countries, so called first world democracies are now much older and indebted than 40 years ago (no wonder societies have shifted so hard to the right), buying a house is now waaaay more expensive than 40 years ago, you cannot earn a livable wage just assembling toasters like 40 years ago, you just cannot roll automation and digitization back, no matter how much you complain...

The past cannot come back, neither will it come back just because some people want it to. It's completely futile, but people are not rational about this, they're completely emotional and tribal.

It's like a huge, collective effort in denial: denying that we in the developed world are older, not the first ones in the world anymore, that other countries we always considered inferior to us are even surpassing us technologically while we complain and hope for a savior that brings us 40 years back when we, the white guys, ruled all over.

I don't see it happening: being angry and voting the far right may make some people feel good, it may make them feel they're somehow taking their country back, but it's not going to stop China, India and other countries from developing, investing in new technologies and even creating trade alliances that bypass the US or the EU.

My question: was there a moment in history where societies were so shifted to the right like today? How long did it last?

I believe we need dedicated spaces for political discussion that are not based on algorithms optimized for engagement (aka outrage). Lemmy has the advantage that the algorithms ordering content are pretty easy to understand and are not driven by the profit incentives that require maximizing user engagement over all else.

In my opinion, Lemmy lacks two things to facilitate being this public square today. The first is a way to limit bots or bad actors from participating in discussions. To my knowledge the bot problem has not been solved on this platform. (Please correct me if I'm wrong). The second is that some of the people who need to participate in these discussions aren't on Lemmy.

I believe both of these issues could be fixed by governments hosting their own instances and requiring identification from that country to participate on the platform. An 'official' place for representatives and constituents to converse should resolve second issue. I think just a few key people actively participating in discussions would be enough to start this transituon. The ID will make many people nervous, and we should be wary of ways in which governments could abuse this power. I don't know of a better way to reduce bot influence on public discussions though.

This next bit is American specific (sorry). Having the government host the instance would make it subject to the first amendment, so it should be difficult to silence views through moderation if the constitution still means anything. Even though SCOTUS seems to ignore it, I believe it's in our best interest to act as if the constitution still works the way we want it to. To act otherwise is to concede its power.

Wtf meta, what's going on?

I have 2 GOP parents, one that voted Trump originally and one that did not. Over the last 9 years, I have watched them both travel down the MAGA pipeline to become visibly fascist. The parents who taught me racism was wrong and to have empathy for others, have become openly hostile about immigrants, Muslims, and even parrot the Nazi "great replacement" theory.

Part and parcel with this, they refuse to have any discussions about the facts -- like immigrants not stealing and eating people's pets. They won't hear it, they won't even engage in the conversation...they just get angry and loud the second they hear anything that doesn't fit into the Fox News narrative. Can you relate? How are you dealing with it in your relationships with your parents?

I called them for the first time ever back in February of this year due to my first manic episode. I was stoned 24/7 for a month straight after being illegally fired from my job. I was also smoking one of those mystery "mushroom" vapes during this time.

Eventually, I believed that my union had started a massive international social media campaign surrounding my case without telling me. This was exciting and fun at first, until I made a statement insulting Trump and Musk to some of my union siblings. At that point, I started to believe that I was the subject of a gamergate style hate mob and that my life was in danger.

At 3am after at least 2 weeks of very little sleep, I thought I heard noises from my phone that indicated a streamer that hacked me. At this point, I called 911 to report a stalker. Nothing came of the call, but my family knew something was wrong and gave me the help I needed. I'd be happy to share more about what I was believing at the time for those interested; mental health is important folks!

Hi. I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a good way to learn Dutch. A few months ago, I came across this website How to learn Japanese from tofugu. It recommended learning hiragana, basic kanji pronunciation, how to pronounce characters, and everything related to mnemonics in order to remember everything as well as possible.

I wonder if anyone could recommend a good way to learn Dutch? Perhaps someone who is currently learning it or has a favorite set of Anki flashcards or a YouTube channel worth recommending?

In any format? I prefer to buy video games physically and have a respectable book, VHS and vinyl record collection. Though the majority of my music and video-based entertainment are digital.

So, I plan on going to Canada for a student exchange program on my university, maybe even live there. How many years before it I should start getting ready? What do I get? Can I choose the state I will study/live on? How many money do I need to bring there?

1. figured out how to reformat an old hard drive that i needed the space to store new shows I wantef to have and was able to make room for so much stuff. It took way to long for me to sit down focused and walk thru a 5 minute youtube video explaining it and it paid off. I knew that was the solution all the while, just took a long time to buckle down and do it. I need to get more in that habit

2. Couldnt remember debit pin and its annoyed me for a long time when i needed to withdraw cash various times. Found a forum post saying the exact process in the banks app and had it sorted out in less than a minute. Itd been like 3 months I put up with that and its just not an issue anymore

The general consensus here is that if you generate AI art at all, regardless of whether you use it commercially or not, you are engaging in art theft and are in fact an asshole.

So why doesn't that logic get applied to straight up turning someone's digital art and/or photos into memes and having millions of people repost it with zero attribution? I'm not talking about things like wojaks or rage comic characters where the creator intended for it to be a meme and knew for a fact that other people will copy it, nor am I talking about screenshots of popular media franchises, but the random art and photos people post that just happens to resonate with the internet in a way the creator never foresaw, becoming memes without the creator even initially knowing. Think the original advice animal meme templates like Scumbag Steve or Bad Luck Brian where it's literally just a random photo of someone, probably taken off their personal social media. Or the two serious and one goofy dragon drawing and others that were very clearly posts on art sharing sites that got reposted with new context. I've even seen some meme templates go out of their way to crop out names and signatures that the original creator put there so they are credited when their work is reposted. And no one slamming AI art seemingly has a problem with any of it. In fact, if you as the creator of an image tried to get the internet to stop using your personal work as a meme with no attribution, you'd be ignored at best and targeted for doxxing and harassment at worst for spoiling their fun, probably by some of the same people condemning the use of AI.

If you go on art sharing sites, the consensus among the artists themselves is that you're not supposed to repost their work at all unless given a CC license or otherwise explicit permission. Whether it's for commercial use or just as a random internet post doesn't seem to change their stance in the slightest. This implicitly includes not just AI but memes as well, as in both cases you are taking someone else's work and redistributing it without permission or attribution. So why is this okay if AI art is not? It's even more blatant than AI because it's not just stealing tons of people's work, blending them all in a neural network, and spitting out a "new" work that still has fragments of the stolen work, it straight up IS just stealing a specific person's specific work, full stop. I feel like the reason is circular, it's okay because it's been happening since forever and that's what makes it okay. And AI art is not okay because it's new and doesn't already have a history of everyone doing it.

The majority of people condemning AI art are not themselves artists but cite things like "respect for artists" as a reason for condemning it. But most artists aren't just against AI but against their art being reposted by anyone for any purpose, profit or otherwise. Even if they were never going to make money from that piece, they are still against reposts on principle while most of the non-artists seem to only talk about AI separating artists from revenue. So if we're actually to respect artists, wouldn't we adopt that stance for everything and not just commercial use or AI?

And if this is okay, what about AI art makes it different enough to not be okay?

Finally, it's not like people never make money off memes so a binary "AI is for profit while memes aren't" doesn't work.

Not trying to defend AI art, but trying to go further with the discussion that has appeared around it and genuinely trying to tease out some consistency and fundamental values in subjects everyone ostensibly feel extremely strongly about and are not willing to budge.
