There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml.

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

What is your favorite alternative ? Why ? Are Raspberry Pi tutorials compatible with it ? Thank you, everyone

I'm just curious how the far-right is framing these developments, and how it differs per country.

Are they mostly talking about the "pyromaniacs"?

Or about how governments failed to do organize the (supposedly normal) periodic low intensity fires to prevent the big ones?

Or are they simply not talking about it at all?

If you have any concrete links to local media, I would be very curious!

My father is sorting items in his huge houses, 2 of them, to sell, give away or dump as a hopefully previous step to downsizing, which took me to think about how much stuff of my childhood sits there wasting space, stuff I could try to sell or give away, because after my parents die I don’t plan to move back there: I’ve made my life elsewhere and down there there are no decent jobs.

The items: A huge collection of 300 or so music CDs and 50 vinyl records I bought between ages 15 and 25 of my favorite bands back then. I don’t believe I’d get even 2 bucks a piece, not even for the vinyls (no special editions), my library with 250 or so books I bought and received as presents during my childhood, including a complete encyclopedia, clothes that are already too small for my physique.

I moved out 10 years ago and I’ve rarely visited. Those items are more something I remember than something I need: I digitized the music library years ago, the books I like I can get online or I already have them, I could save some clothes that fit and toss the rest, I could also use my old bed and study table, because those things are actually useful. I don’t even have a CD or a vinyl player (my father does).

I know that stuff is only stuff and when I die, it will all remain here on earth and most probably be sold or destroyed, but I I just can't bring myself to throw them away, even though I know it’s the logical choice as a previous step to sell that old house.

Moving the stuff in with me makes me a hoarder, so no. Plus I don’t have that much space. And what would I move the stuff in with me for? It would sit there in boxes wasting space.

What worked for you?

I have a rooted redmi note 11 pro 4g with unofficial lineageos installed. It is my personal device. But I barely use it. If someone calls I pick up, that's about it. The phone is completely clean too, no trace of whatsapp or anything like that. The most bloated app on the phone is brave. Like I said, squeaky clean. Now I want to turn this into a machine using plain termux or chroot to run piefed, gotosocial and stuff, and host my blog page, but I am undecided. Since it's rooted, I thought I could set up something that starts charging at 45% and cuts off at 75%. What do you think I should do?

The main question is in the title. If you run a server on your own device, what do you host on it?

When snorkeling, scuba diving, or just swimming with goggles, you don't need corrective glass, why does water do this and not air? Both are transparent continuous fluids.

I was staying at an APA Hotel in Tokyo and stumbled upon this by accident.

When watching videos on Youtube via screencast on the hotel TV it seems like they are blocking specific videos related to WW2 and Japan. I even was using a VPN but it seems like they block it via the screencast.

Has anyone else expierienced something similar?

I've been slowly working my way towards starting a podcast. I know my theme and I have ideas for the first couple episodes, but I'm looking for more in-depth guides through the technical parts of the process. I can research and find open source audio editors, I have access to a good mic setup, and I can write a script, record it, and edit it. My concern is more of the release side. I'm aware that the podcast ecosystem runs via RSS, but I'm looking for a sort of walkthrough of this last leg of the process. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Aren't they all proper nouns and therefore supposed to not need the definite article?

lot of thing happened for me, not even single warning and bang, it hits so hard to the point i feel like i want to give up on life. what happened so far :

  • lost 4+ years of hardwork and source of income due to small mistake
  • money stuck in certain platform and they no guarantee it will be back after 6 months
  • ghosted by "close friends". realized most of them don't care when i am at lowest
  • staying in hotel and Aircon brokes two days before i checkout, and not even single compensation given
  • i still highly depends on medication just to able to sleep, doctor doesnt seem to have empathy
  • i have CTS (Carpal tunnel syndrome) for years and i still cannot regain my full strength back.
  • my career stuck in low income level, and its hard to get new job these days
  • still regularly going to hospital at least 2-3 times a week, to the point i get tired of it already

people say life is blessing, but for me life is suffering, all bad things always happened, i am not even allowed to be happy anymore.

since stackoverflow is dead and reddit is also on the way to its grave, I was wondering if we can have enough knowledge base here so that Lemmy comes on the first page of a search query. I know it's very hard to archive and I haven't even seen a single result from lemmy unless I specifically add 'lemmy' keyword to it.

side tangent: Reddit results are also not shown unless we add 'reddit' keyword but sometimes even if you don't add 'reddit' you can see it on the first result.

Only just realized this when watching a diving video.

But why isn't the ocean full of massive plants? The surface of the earth is covered is giant trees working to fight against gravity, wind, and fire.

But in the ocean you have little things like coral beds and sponges and maybe a kelp forest.

Seeing as weight is massively reduced, and the closer you get to the surface means more light, and water and nutrients are probably plentiful... Why isn't the plant life more massive? What is the limiting factor to things evolving to be bigger?

Only thing I can think of is CO2 perhaps?

Imagine you woke up tomorrow and found out you’d been in a Truman Show dome your entire life. How would you feel about the fact that they made the Jim Carrey movie and put it where you could see it?

To give examples from media properties rather than quizzing everyone on philosophy stuff I only learned this year: Blindsight and Westworld

Personally I find the insistence on this annoying and I think consciousness is really important for correcting errors in vision. Who decides when to loose the arrow on the deer, so you don't starve? That's not something which can be handled subsconsciously, training to do it requires presence of mind and imagination.

Let me know if you think I'm misinterpreting it. I am curious what everyone thinks about the fabric of reality.

See, compiling and uploading stuff is good for the brain, it gives us time to reflect. 🧘‍♀️

Edit: want to add that treating human nature as the driving factor in human extinction (which won't happen btw we will win) instead of capitalism is Bill Gates tier liberalism. I am deeply skeptical due to having done a little research on why this stuff is promoted, but dismissing it outright wouldn't make sense, as people with a sufficient amount of money thrown at them in academia tend to produce some valuable nuggets

Wikipedia links it to Fortune-telling for some reason? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%F0%9F%94%AF but doesn't elaborate?

emojis wiki says it's something to do with buddhism? https://emojis.wiki/dotted-six-pointed-star/

It's a really weird symbol

Also found this reddit thread with explanations all over the place https://www.reddit.com/r/Emoji/comments/16buwk0/meaning_of_dotted_sixpointed_star/

The unicode explanation simply says "SIX POINTED STAR WITH MIDDLE DOT" (very helpful) (not)

and the official chart has an arrow to the star of david and that's it https://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U1F300.pdf

Almost all the global society-altering creations i can think of FROM THE PAST 100 YEARS are from America. I highly doubt that's true, so I'm looking for counter-examples.

To clarify, I'm looking for items on the level of:

  • the internet
  • rock music
  • nuclear weapons
  • ai
  • ~~airplane flight~~ (older than 100 years)

And clearly I'm not just including things that improved the world.

The best ones i can think of are (I think):

  • ~~Rocketry (Germany)?~~
  • Cheap tech manufacturing (Asian countries)?

EDIT:

Actually rocketry has been around much longer than 100 years. Even the category of "modern rocketry" begins in the late 1800s. Source: https://www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/TRC/Rockets/history_of_rockets.html

EDIT 2:

A further explanation of what level I'm talking about.

There has to be a clear before and after, and it has to directly and quickly effect most of the world. For example the Internet. There's life before the internet, and there's life after the internet, which are both very different.

As opposed to for example if someone makes a groundbreaking foundational research discovery that effects the entire realm of their field of study, but doesn't quickly and directly create a difference in most people's lives, then it doesn't fit the category.

I recently got my orthok lenses, and have been struggling to insert them.

I even managed to hurt my left eye because I kept blinking the lense off before it was aligned (thus jamming its edge into my eye, repeatedly).

What are your tips to getting them in, especially if you're sensitive or prone to blinking.

I learn about Peertube when I joined Lemmy, but never really tried it out.

Recently noticed that Blender has a Peertube instance
https://video.blender.org/videos/browse?sort=-likes

Thought about searching for science content in Peertube, but it seems that the most prominent one is France's Deot of Education's French language instance and content.
Does anyone know any other good channels?

Need not be science only tho. Could be trivia, politics or an alternate to mainstream ones in youtube.

I do know that Tankie.tube exists as an anti-imperialist socialist/left-ish instance.
