Woke up today to the homeserver being unresponsive. Couldn't SSH, no video out when I connected a monitor, and even the reset button didn't do anything. Had to hold the power button to shut it down.

/var/log/syslog doesn't show anything interesting other than the issue happened at just after 4am. Log

Would something like this be a direct hardware failure? Like a power supply hiccup or something? It happening at 4am coincides with my electric car starting to charge, but the server is on a dedicated 20A circuit and behind a battery backup. I also don't see any power issues on my Sense monitor at that time though it has limited resolution.

Mainboard is a Supermicro H13SAE-MF and I'm using ECC RAM.

I've been running this hardware for over a year and never had this issue, but I'm running out of places to look.

Might be time to finally get IPMI working.

Trump has no power to “decree” that voters must present ID or to end mail-in balloting. But that doesn’t mean he can’t at least try both. Under the Insurrection Act or some other dusty statute, he can declare a state of emergency. Then he can decide that said state permits, nay requires, him to take extraordinary measures. On October 5, say, that might mean outlawing early voting. By October 13, it might mean no mail-in voting. By October 29, a reminder that all voters must present ID to vote. And by Sunday, November 1, two days before the election—an announcement that all these “reasonable” measures have alas failed, and he is now forced, against his will, to postpone the election.

A Hong Kong court sentenced the father of a U.S.-based activist to eight months in prison Thursday for attempting to withdraw some funds from his daughter’s insurance policy, in the first case against a family member of a pro-democracy advocate wanted by the city’s authorities brought under a national security law.

Kwok Yin-sang, 69, was found guilty earlier this month of attempting to deal with financial assets belonging to an “absconder” under the 2024 security law, locally known as Article 23 legislation. His daughter Anna Kwok, who is the executive director of the Washington-based Hong Kong Democracy Council, slammed his conviction as “transnational repression.”

Authorities have offered 1 million Hong Kong dollars (about $127,900) for information leading to the younger Kwok’s arrest and later banned anyone from handling any funds for her. She is among 34 people targeted by police bounties, widely seen as part of a crackdown on dissent following the massive, anti-government protests in 2019.

Anna Kwok said in an Instagram post that sentencing her father under the pretext that his actions lowered the likelihood of her return to stand trial is a judicial farce. She insisted she was not the owner of the insurance policy.

“My father was convicted and sentenced under the guise of ‘national security’ ... this is guilt by blood, this is hostage taking,” she said.

The older Kwok bought an insurance policy for his daughter when she was a toddler, and she gained control of it when she reached the age of 18. In 2025, the father sought to terminate the policy and withdraw funds amounting to roughly $11,000, the court heard. He was arrested the same year for allegedly attempting to deal with funds belonging to an “absconder.”

Hong Kong police have issued bounties for other overseas-based Hong Kong activists, including pro-democracy former lawmakers Nathan Law and Ted Hui. The U.S. and the U.K. governments have condemned the bounties.

Shares in the payment company soared more than 25 percent in after-hours trading on Thursday as it announced it would shed more than 4,000 jobs from its 10,000-strong workforce.

“Intelligence tools have changed what it means to build and run a company. We’re already seeing it internally,” Dorsey wrote in a letter to shareholders.

“A significantly smaller team, using the tools we’re building, can do more and do it better. And intelligence tool capabilities are compounding faster every week.”

Dorsey, who left his role as CEO of Twitter in 2021, is among the first Silicon Valley chiefs to explicitly tie huge job cuts to the ability of AI to replace human workers.

I recently configured forward auth with Authentik and Envoy Gateway and found the process troublesome enough to warrant a post. If you've been thinking about doing the same then maybe this post will save some time.

The deal marks the rising defense cooperation and strategic investments between Germany and Israel across underwater and air defense systems.

Berlin approved an additional $3.1 billion package for the Israeli Arrow 3 anti-ballistic missile system in Dec. 2025, bringing the total value of Germany’s Arrow 3 procurement to around $6.7 billion, which is the largest defense export deal in Israel’s history, according to the Israeli Defense Ministry.

The Arrow 3 system, developed with US support, plays a key role in Germany’s broader missile defense architecture in Europe.

I just installed NetBird on a VPS using the Self-Hosting Quickstart Guide. Now I want to connect the VPS using Netbird to another client. When I also use Docker to register the VPS as a Netbird peer the whole network gets messed up because now the server and the client try to manage the network. So how am I supposed to register the VPS as a netbird peer to connect it to other peers?
