Only on reddit can you say "pedophilia is bad and AI tech should have more regulation against csam" and get downvoted to oblivion and have someone named "xXxdark_SHADExXx" reply with "oh so you're against free speech?"

Burn it down, repurpose the datacenter into housing for the homeless, anything but this absolute cretin shit.

i was under the impression that were explicitly against genAI but i found that some people are actually VERY pro genai and quite dismissive of its risks. this happened on lemmy but i saw people getting downvoted for saying that genAI in its current state is harmful to the environment. i saw the old bullshit of how ”i use AI for art because i cant draw”, it was crazy. i called someone a Promptitute and someone unironically told me not to say that, just so much. so can everybody pls affirm you dont support that crap.

another user straight up admitted that they use AI as a friend and to gn to... i dont care how much we have in common ideologically, i cant support you gning to chatgpt and thinking its your friend...

For what I needed a PC to do, retro gaming, web browsing, light multimedia, it's like this T480s was tailor made for me 😎 You're going to hate me but so far Windows 11, I've had no problems with it, dirty of me to say when people are screaming at me to install Mint. But I'm a major dingdong and if it ain't broke don't fix it? Feels nice to have nice things sometimes.

I swear to god there's now botting of comments where people comment "This is AI" on posts/art that are clearly not "AI" generated. I'm going to put on my conspiracy tinfoil hat on and say that this must be some sort of psyop, there's no way it's organic. It has to be some strategy that the big "AI" companies are doing to discredit anyone critical of "AI" products, to make anyone who dislikes them look crazy.

As someone who just graduated college, I have spent the last year learning what lots of people on here probably already know: if you can't get a job/education lined up, society (especially in the US) will do everything it can to make you feel like a pathetic failure. I applied for PhD positions and got in nowhere because academia in the US is unbelievably cooked (a whole other rant). Anecdotal evidence says that schools were accepting literally ~5 people out of an applicant pool of ~300 because of funding cuts, and the situation before funding cuts wasn't much better. But anyways, not getting into a PhD position is very far from the end of the world; I can just take a gap year and reapply.

However, I feel like my experience and the experiences of those around me (both of rejection and success) have really reinforced just how "connections" seem to be damn near the only thing that can get you a position at this point. I already knew how important connections were in the job search; I've heard all the sayings like "your network is your net worth" and "it's not about what you know, it's about who you know." That shit sucks. But I naïvely thought that somehow academics would be more insulated from this type of stuff. I knew that PhD applications were personal affairs on some level; you're applying to work with someone more than you're applying to a school as a whole. But people around me would talk about how they would talk to potential advisors at conferences and get lunch with their current research advisors. It felt like there was a social aspect to being in academia that I didn't know you had to participate in and that I just kinda didn't grasp. I like my advisors, but I usually kept my relationship with them to research and I have no idea how I'm supposed to get to know them better so they can write better rec letters for me and blah blah blah. I don't know if I'm over-analyzing my rejections (given that acceptance rates are literally 2%) but it feels like the fact that I didn't go out of my way to "network" hurt my chances. Anyways I now get another chance to apply to either an absolutely cooked higher education system or an absolutely cooked job market kitty-cri

tl;dr: complaining about how I graduated college and didn't get into any PhD programs and do not have a job rn and I think the fact that I have a hard time "making connections" and "networking" probably hurt my chances

Nothing breaks my morale faster than sending out endless copies of job applications just to be ghosted. Or at best going to endless rounds of interviews that just waste my time

The worst offender was when a company tried to send me to a random street because that was supposedly the retail store that needed people. I looked it up on Google Maps and that store didn't even exist

I have 2 female cats, both about two years old. My tortie is a slinky trouble maker that lets me know when she thinks it's dinner time and can't wait to chow down. My tabby is about 50% heavier despite never really being food motivated, and just sorta nibbles at her kibble. They get fed about 1/4 cup of kibble twice a day and as far as I can tell they split it evenly. My vet told me I need to start watching the Tabby's weight since she is at 13lbs, but I don't think I can cut down their food anymore. Anyone have any advice? The vet didn't give me any useful info, just said watch her weight.

I have to get some blood work done. When I was told to get the blood work done, I was told to go to Quest Diagnostics. I told the person I was working with that I do not want to go to Quest, I have access to a great walk in lab in my primary care office. The person I was talking to said they sometimes do not get the information from that lab back reliably because its "outside our system". I said, that I'd just rather not do that. They pressed the issue somewhat. Ok, I said, I'll just give Quest a shot. That was, my first mistake.

Yesterday I go to Quest, first time I've been to a Quest lab, no idea what to expect. The KIOSK scans my ID, and my Insurance card, no human in sight except for the wall of people waiting in the tiny lobby. The Kiosk asks me why I'm there... which I figured it should know, they sent the order to Quest after all. I pick whatever option looks correct, because none of them look correct. Then it tells me "Sorry, we have no more availability today"... Cool, that could have been the first message, but no. I have to fast to get this blood work done. They kiosk tells me I can schedule a time, you can come back at 2:00PM tomorrow it says. I'm not fasting all day tomorrow until 2:00PM, no thanks.

I leave. I get on the phone with the provider's office I'm working with. It's one of these, public 🤝 private partnerships my state insurance has. Person answers. I tell them I want to have my orders sent to the lab I like, that I was just at Quest, it was not a good experience (you have to say things like this I've learned), and that I have great experiences at the lab I like. The person was nice, she changed my preferred location, she emailed me a copy of the order, she said she sent the order over, that it was all set. She said I didn't have to go to Quest, in a tone that implied "who told you that?". I told her, my provider effectively pressured me into going to Quest. She said, well, you don't have to. Just remember to send us a message once you see your results in your local providers health app so we can check if we've received it. Cool, I said, and moved on with my morning.

I went to the lab I like this morning. I sign in, it's a clip board. They open at 7:30, no one else is waiting, that's usually the case. I get pulled in right away. I sit down, they ask for my details, then after looking me up to inform me that I don't have any orders on file. Ok... They probably faxed them I said. She checks her stack of faxes, she then tells me, it's not there. OK... cool... Well I have the order right here! It's on my phone actually, do you need to look at it? You can just, have my phone. Nope. I need a piece of paper, she replies. OK... good... well, I see you have a printer there, can I just... email you the PDF I have? Then you can print it, then we can get this done? No, I don't give my email out like that, sorry. Ok... great... hey, does that Printer have a USB port on it? Do you care if I plug my phone into that printer? Yeah, knock yourself out. So I do. Nothing. Just a lot of wishful thinking.

Ok then, I'll be back, and if not I'll be back another day. I walk out the door, to the front desk. They ask if I have an appointment. I tell them my situation. They get my info. They look me up. Sorry, you don't have any orders on file. Yes, I am aware of that. I was just in the lab (which is about 50ft across the room), they said they didn't receive a fax. Is there possibly some other fax machine that might have received this order? Well, I just checked all the faxes, I didn't see any orders. Ok... I said. They replied, Your provider isn't in this building, you know that right? Yes... I said. One second, let me call them. So they call. Minutes pass. Yeah they didn't get anything, they say eventually. Ok, well I have the order right here on my phone. I hold up my phone. I see you have some printers here, at least three of them, is there a way I could send this to your email and you could print it for me? No. I'm not allowed to do that, she replies. Right, I see. Ok well, the order, which I have here on my phone, says the fax number it sent it to is XXX-XXX-XXXX, is that this buildings fax number? One second she says then turns to the room. Hey, is this our buildings fax number? Where does this fax go? Huh, oh... I think that one goes to MY desk, someone else answers. Two workers leave, to go check the fax. Minutes pass. Yeah sorry, we don't have anything, I'm eventually told. Got it. Cool. So, there is no way that we can find a way to use those printers, to print the order, which I have here? No... I don't think so. Right... let me call them.

So I call them. I guess, however, It's too early. I get the "over night" line. It's about 8:00AM at this point. Someone picks up. I tell them who I am, what my situation is, that I would like my orders faxed over to my location. Ok, they said, just one moment. Hi, what's your name?
Oh, its Red Wizard,
Ok... Red Wizard, I'm with you, I'm communicating with you (this is real btw) can you spell that for me?
Uh sure, it's R E D W I Z A R D.
Great, thank you, one second... I'm with you... OK What is your phone number?
Yup its XXX-XXX-XXXX,
thank you... I'm communicating with you, I'm with you, ok, so What is your Email address?
Oh, it's redwizard@hexbear.net,
thank y.. did you say... sorry redwizardhexbearnet?
No, redwizard @ hexbear DOT net,
right of course, redwizard@hexbearnet,
No, DOT net.
Oh, redwizard@hexbear.net ok, I'm with you, one second, I'm communicating with you............... ok what is the name of your provider?
Right... its HEALTH PLACE,
right, can you.. spell that for me?
Sorry, what, you need.. Ok.. uh, its H E A L T
yes please spell it for me.
OK. IT's H E A L T H P L A C E, it's at ADDRESS in STATE.
Thank you... I'm with you, I'm communicating OK so, thank you for calling the overnight service for PROVIDER if this is a medical emergency please hang up and dial 911, my name is REDACTED what exactly are you calling about today?
Uh.. yeah, like I said, I have orders that I need faxed to my current location. I'm here at the lab, someone was supposed to fax those yesterday, that obviously didn't happen, and I just need them faxed again, so I can get this done.
Oh so this is about... about labs ok. What kind of labs?
They're just annual blood work labs.
Ok... right ok. Well, I've sent a message off, and they should see it soon.
Sorry?
I sent a message off, and someone should see it soon is there anything else I can help you with?
So you can't just, fax the labs over?
No sorry, I do not have access to that information. I've sent a message. Is there anything else?
Nope.

The orders, are on my phone. I'm standing in the middle of an office, where, from which I stand I can literally see at least 4 printers and 1 multifunction copier. I walk out of the building. I get into my car. I shut the door. I scream as loud as I possibly can. I drive home.

You know. I had this passing thought yesterday that I should have just printed the orders out, but I never did. I have access to a printer here in my office. I called the provider again after I got to work, a nice person on the line told me they would fax them over, again. I'm going to call the place soon and see if they got the orders. My guess is they probably haven't.

I’m curious what the general consensus is here cause I am so so fucking tired of listening to people talk about Graham Platner.

I’m amenable to the possibility of him being decent but I am not holding my breath over it.

it’s just another perfect example of the inherent flaws in “the left” ever hitching its wagon to the fucking Democratic Party.

That phrase “the left” makes my skin crawl in general. I am so tired of having to constantly wrest the identity of a historic movement away from this or that charlatan, it is humiliating to me and my peers to invest faith and trust in these people.

But without a party, who can we say represents “the left”? With the crimes of chattel slavery and now Palestinian genocide, is this party really the vehicle?

As far as I’m concerned any Democratic politician has a massive bar to clear for any support from me. More importantly I think we can point to some disturbingly clear examples that the institutional forces of Democratic Party politics easily overawing any individual representative of “the left”

I don’t like to disparage people choosing optimism in general. It just seems so glaringly obvious that without an enforcement mechanism outside of the Democratic Party there is very little to create any kind of actual accountability and there is nothing but unlimited reward for participation and substance-less posturing.

Wonder what the PSL is up to! Wish them nothing but good things.

Curious where everyone is besides sick of this. WHO gives a fuck! It’s Maine! Hardly anyone lives there! Have you ever seen a black fly? Too scary in general this is just par for the course

Okay I dunno if it was a will o the wisp, or what, but I did go over this morning and check this spot of the woods out. Nothing to report, some water runoff from the mountain, a tupperware plastic container and a beer bottle.

So I'm thinking it was the light reflecting off one of those objects, there's a street lamp about 10-20 yards away. Or perhaps it was biolumi shit from decaying leaves mixed with water?

Anyway I didn't get abducted or met any greys or stinky lizard men.

A series of colored lights in a circle that were flashing. Very small like led sized, flashing red, blue, yellow. I literally have no clue what it is and I'm sure as fuck not going outside.

wtf?

edit: it might be a false alarm, it could be the neighbor's front light hitting running water off the mountain

But then it's just Ethan Klein instead of Ezra Klein

Can someone explain what happened to me with this situation? Seemed like I missed some huge news or a big scandal last week, I saw a Man Carrying Thing video reference but don't know exactly what happened except some company stole someone's Legos through legal loopholes or something? But apparently it's way more than that.

That's the post. I love them and would walk through glass and fire for them. They're great people who are everything to me.

This is your daily post to go outside and find people. Once you find your people, and you will because it's not a matter of "if" but "when", you'll feel like a million bucks.

I'm listening to Hell of Presidents again and it's always incredibly refreshing to hear such a materialist framing for the early days of the US. Like understanding why the goal of not forming parties immediately failed because of conflicts between different factions of capital (e.g. southern slavers vs. northern bankers).

But then what do Republicans and Democrats represent today? I understand they are historical holdovers from over a century ago, so they have have metastasized into a whole lot more than just representing one or two factions of capital, but there must be some materialist divide between them? Or maybe during the neoliberal turn it was recognized by capital to set aside differences and ultimately control both to give the working class even less power than they already had. But now it seems like the tech fascists are trying to coalesce into the Republicans, and I guess that's what the Republicans are atm, just a more openly fascistic bourgeois party than the democrats?
