What's a little extra 5 or 10 mph on the clock?

It quite literally is.

If you don't keep up with traffic, people pass you, and that is much more dangerous than an extra 10mph

[–] Bieren@lemmy.today 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I’ve had people blow past me at like 20-30 over. Swerving all over through traffic. Only for me to pull up beside them at the stop light at the top of the exit ramp. Worth it. Not saying it’s always the case. But it’s funny af when it does.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 1 points 5 hours ago

That's not relevant to this article.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 6 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Then people should stop passing, and realise an ekstra 5 mph isn't going to get you to your destination any faster?

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 7 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

Good luck telling that to your average moron on the road

We don't live in fantasy land where common sense exists and we have to work around that

[–] MBech@feddit.dk -3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Sure, but just because they are morons, doesn't mean I have to drive faster than what I deem is safe.

[–] MonkRome@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

The safest speed is nearly always the average speed of traffic, this is well studied...

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 0 points 12 hours ago

Can't argue with facts with someone that goes off feelings

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 0 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

That is true, but that doesn't mean I feel safe driving as fast as other drivers. It doesn't mean I feel confident in my ability to react in time, if something was to happen a few cars ahead. Is it statistically safest? Absolutely, but that doesn't mean everyone is equally safe going that speed.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

If you don't feel confident driving the usual flow of traffic you shouldn't be driving

So many times I've had to slam on brakes to let an idiot get back in their side after a pass because some slowpoke idiot is doing 60kmph on a 100kmph road and a whole column is passing them

If you don't speed tf up you will get yourself or someone else killed

When you're alone on the road drive whatever speed you like

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

We're generally talking about people driving over the speedlimit on this post. Someone doing 60km/h in a 100 km/h zone isn't the point of discussion. Someone driving 120 km/h in a 100 km/h zone is the problem. You can't blame the people simply following the laws for the actions of people breaking the laws.

[–] MonkRome@lemmy.world -1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Is the law what's important or safety?

[–] MBech@feddit.dk -1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)
  1. What's most safe, everyone driving 100 km/h or everyone driving 120 km/h? 100 km/h, so it's not the slow drivers that are unsafe, it's the idiots driving faster than the limit.

  2. Are you seriously asking people to risk a fine, their drivers license and depending on their job, their livelyhood, just because you're more important than the law? In this economy?

[–] MonkRome@lemmy.world 0 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

I never said I think that society as a whole should drive faster, I said that the safest speed is the average speed. You don't lower the speed by putting up signs or blindly driving slower than traffic. You lower it by narrowing lanes, crowding the clear zone, and implementing other physical calming measures (sharper corners, speed bumps, trees overhnging, etc).

I dont make decisions based on some ideological stance on how things "should" be, I make decisions based on the reality I live in. In reality, what we both live in, the safest speed to drive is objectively, the average speed of traffic. You're certainly free to drive 20 km/h below the average speed, but you're getting down voted because it is an ideological stance not based in reality.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not arguing that it isn't safer to drive the average speed, I'm arguing that the deminishing safety isn't the slower drivers' fault. It's the fault of the people forcing safer drivers to be a hazard for their own bullshit ego and lack of ability to proper plan their departure time. I'm arguing that you shouldn't blame the slow drivers, blame the people who, by ignoring a law for their own selfishness, is creating a dangerous situation, when the safest possible option is to follow the agreed speed limit.

[–] MonkRome@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Sure, but just because they are morons, doesn't mean I have to drive faster than what I deem is safe.

This is what people responded to.

The answer to that remains the same. What you deem as safe is irrelevant, what is safe is the speed of traffic. I don't care about blame, I don't care about fault, I don't care about legality, or ideological purity of you're perceived self righteousness. Safety should be the measure all other things hinge off of, full stop.

Under the metric of safety the people who drive much faster or much slower than the speed of traffic are the most dangerous people on the road. They are the cause of and at fault in the most accidents because in both cases, their ego is more important than their or others lives.

[–] BlackVenom@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

Yeah but if you're the odd one out, you're the problem.

If everyone is going too fast for you, you should use a slower road and not be a danger/impediment.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk -1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I think that's a very backwards way of thinking about it. If you're being safe, but a bunch of people are being unsafe, and bring your life in danger, that's not you being a problem, that's you being a victim.

If people start waving knives around at random, and telling you they'll get closer to you, if you don't also wave a knife around, then that's a hostage situation, not people wanting you to be safe.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

You're not being safer by driving slower, your base premise is wrong

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 1 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

My base premise is faster drivers being the source of slower drivers being unsafe, not the other way around. Thus the slower drivers are the victims of this, and shouldn't be blamed for driving slower, and definately shouldn't be encouraged to driver faster, just because a bunch of assholes think they're more important than everyone else.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 0 points 10 hours ago

They should be encouraged and enabled to not drive at all.

Slow drivers are a big reason why I want free and abundant public transportation.
