Veteran here. It's more like: "I'm a fucking idiot, but I could use some healthcare, and that college thing sounds nice."
Plan B was to kill myself, so I don't feel bad about enlisting - I got what I needed from it.
You'd be amazed how few people join because of cliches like patriotism. That said, it'd be way less fucked if people could get things like healthcare and education without needing to agree to blow themselves or others up.
Idk chief I think if I needed those things I'd organize my community to demand them first and not go into the "will I kill a bunch of innocent foreigners" lottery.
Awesome, who taught you how to organize your community and which community volunteered their HUGE amount of spare time and effort for your benefit?
Some of us had a fucking choice between dying homeless or learning to survive in the military, and you removed about it now is a weak-ass bitter excuse for venting your frustration at the wrong goddamn people.
Awesome, who the hell raised you and which one of the NATO states do you belong to that disperses the HUGE spoils of their imperialism for your benefit?
Murdered children, women and unarmed men across the fucking planet didn't have A choice, ANY choice in the matter especially considering that they were already struggling under unending sanctions, occupation, wars, genocide, or a combination of all of the previous. You thoughtless motherfuckers pretend like you're perpetual victims when you WILLINGLY volunteer to steal the lives of entire family lines, or help others do so, just so you and only you yourself can have a shot at life.

Individual members of any society or any military are not stand-ins for all the evil of that society or military. If they are, I guarantee your own membership on some groups - whether by choice or chance - would condemn you as harshly as anyone on earth.
There are no unflawed people or systems. Don't become an abuser because you were abused.
See, this is what I'm talking about. Your life isn't worth more than that of many, many foreigners. It's one thing to be like "I didn't know any better and I regret it" and quite another to put on the whole Chris Kyle self martyrdom piece.
