This was no mistake.  It was a test.

They also said unauthorized access or photography was not allowed in that area and that 'if you are found here, you may be detained and searched.' Mexico's foreign affairs ministry said its navy removed the signs from the sand, which it believed were on Mexican territory."

That's the result they wanted.

It's Mexico, clear as day, but Mexico just waffled on it and said they "believed" it was Mexico.

They'll take a page out of Israel's playbook and start saying "until we figure this out, it's a buffer zone". Then just keep expanding it and not obstructing Americans from "settling" there, once they're established, then it's obviously America because why else would Americans be living there?

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 33 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

You might be reading too much into that. The article stated Mexico's naval personnel removed them as the personnel acted on the information they had. I would highly doubt they were going to go to great lengths to confirm the exact coordinates of the boarder.

Do I think that's what the Americans were trying to do? Yes. But Mexico didn't waffle it.

What??

This wasn't a random place, it's a fucking beach with people who go there routinely...

What "great lengths" did you think it would take to determine which side of Trump's ridiculous fence this was on?

You think people that live and work right next to the border, are unsure about where the border is?

You think it's something you can accidentally wander across?

Mexico knew that beach was theirs, but when pushed they said it might be instead of saber rattling that America just tried to seize a fucking landinghead

You're making a mountain out of a molehill.

Mexico waffled nothing. They removed the signs. The statement of believe or not isnt consequential.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world -3 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

You think a hostile nation's military headed by a demented narcissist showing up on another country's sovereign soil and placing signs that it belongs to a different country...

Is a molehill?

Buddy, if you don't understand why something is serious, I'd highly advise you to ask questions instead of loudly proclaim it's not a big deal

[–] Uruanna@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

The molehill is your focus on the word believe

The serious part is the US just waltzing into a foreign country planting signs and Mexico removing them

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world -4 points 11 hours ago

The molehill is your focus on the word believe

If I walked up and took a sandwich out of you hand and ate, would you say:

I believe that's my sandwich

And expect me to give it back? Or anyone to help you?

Or do you think:

You just stole my sandwich

Would be more effective?

You're acting like this is one isolated incident with zero consequences...

And I readily admit, I over estimate people's critical thinking abilities, but it seems very clear with how Israel and Russia treat borders, and how chummy with them trump is, that this could very likely be the start of the same behavior.

But like I said, I often think shit is ridiculously obvious just to find out other people just can't connect the dots.

I'll never understand why people get so belligerent instead of just asking questions till they understand.

Can you at least tell me why you didn't want to ask questions when you ran into something you didn't understand?

It's a widespread issue, and I legitimately want some insight into your choices here.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 11 hours ago

The border is really big, and not all of it is fenced. It's definitely possible to accidentally cross it.

Not saying that's what happened here, though.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 8 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

A boarder is someone who lives in your house. A border is what separates countries.

[–] ParadoxSeahorse@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Or maybe they boarded Mexico like a ship, or boarded it with signs, making the Americans the boarders

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 3 points 8 hours ago

All aboard the boarding ship! So exciting! You won't be bored

Like how Russia tested Ukraine?

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 47 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Like how Russia is testing the rest of the EU right now.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Everyone except Turkey who just blew their jets right out of the goddamn sky and said “crossing our airspace without permission is a no.” No accidental incursions there anymore
