If one country wants to go to war with another, politicians should be in the frontline

[–] CyberTheProtogen@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 hours ago

It would probably make for younger world leaders too

You might think this would help prevent wars, but it was standard in the past for politicians to fight battles, and they were dying all the time back then in wars that were also much more common.

An illustrative example is the Wars of the Roses (1455-1487), which ended after all the claimants of the House of Plantagenet died, several of whom were killed in battle or executed by their rivals. The throne ended up in the hands of a minor Welsh noble house, with Henry VII Tudor (father of the more famous Henry VIII) being crowned in 1485.

During the early modern period in Europe, it became less common and eventually rare for rulers to personally partake in battles, but even then military officers were often members of the nobility who held political office of some kind.

RIP Gustavus Adolphus

Just because it happened before, doesn't mean it doesn't help prevent war.

Regardless, I just want to see Trump getting ass fucked in Iran.

[–] Hapankaali@lemmy.world 7 points 10 hours ago

I grant you, it would be hilarious to see footage of Trump on the front lines in Iran (Benny Hill music in the background).

[–] esc@piefed.social 3 points 9 hours ago

It doesn't help.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

To be fair, back then countries weren't led by nursing home escapees

[–] Hapankaali@lemmy.world 6 points 8 hours ago

It did in fact happen with regularity that incapable, insane or otherwise unsuitable rulers would end up ruling.

A famous example is Charles II of Habsburg (ruled the Kingdom of Spain from 1665-1700). Suffering from several though not precisely documented disabilities due to extensive inbreeding, he died in his late thirties.

Ban drones while you’re at it

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

Yeah it's a higher priority for me than nukes. Nukes are effectively already "banned" in the sense that nuking something other than a test site gets you nuked in retaliation

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 1 points 8 hours ago (3 children)

So what happens if Russia nukes Ukraine?

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

It's a good question, because i think that seems like maybe the most likely instance where a nuke might be used - they're best placed to "get away with it." I think the important things to note are that:

  1. russia doesn't want to spoil the land/living space in the short term, needing to make back cost of war.

  2. ukrainian controlled territory, though far from moscow, is bordering russia (and crimea) - russian towns near the border will be affected, and regardless of that, during the chernobyl crisis all countries in europe, maybe even in the world, suffered from the fallout effects. I believe nuclear powers aren't willing to take this gamble- as large countries there's a good chance one of their territories will be affected, as will other countries, who then sour on them.

  3. America is ~~run by~~ lead by you know right now, but under any different president, russia should expect retaliation, and they still might expect retaliation from NATO. It's never worth nuking somewhere just to get nuked yourself.

As for what actually happens, i would honestly hope nobody nukes russia back but rather that it gets invaded by NATO in retaliation, like cattywampas said. But reality is often dissapointing.

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

My bet is that Russia probably gets invaded but nobody else uses a nuke.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 1 points 8 hours ago

Not by the US military under current leadership.

Probably the ideal time for Putin to do it.

[–] placebo@lemmy.zip 2 points 8 hours ago

At some point the idea was that NATO would retaliate using conventional weapons and quickly "destroy" Russia with precise long-range strikes targeted at critical military infrastructure. But with Trump you know it won't happen. Besides, we saw with Russia in Ukraine and with United States in Iran that this doesn't work and there is no quick/easy way to win a war like that. So to answer your question: probably nothing.

Good old fashion Sieges.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The Ukraine version of Robot Wars is pretty fun so far.

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

It is not. Many civilians die there, daily. Once you see the aftermath of a drone strike on a human, the red goo with bits that is left behind, which looks like a person turned liquid, is not "fun". Not even as a joke.

[–] Eyekaytee@aussie.zone 5 points 9 hours ago

sir this is a lemmy shitpost

[–] esc@piefed.social 3 points 9 hours ago

When you are piloting it's actually pretty fun and very engaging.

[–] Mr_Fish@lemmy.nz 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

It's like a sword duel vs a pistol duel in movies. Sword duels need to have some choreography, even when it's not great. Pistol duels are they just stand there until one of them shoots the other

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 1 points 8 hours ago

Just ask Alec Baldwin.

[–] magnolia_mayhem@lemmy.world 0 points 7 hours ago

But do you support the use of tactical scale nukes?
