Keys on a chain, or a belt with a decent buckle.

I have a thick leather lanyard on my keys that I'm sure would suck to take a whack from, but I do feel like I'd be more likely to hurt myself swinging a weighted anything on a strap/chain.

Look up less-lethals. They are like overpowered BB guns for self defense. You can legally carry them anywhere that doesn't have a no weapons sign. My brother got me into them. I still never shot it so I don't know how lethal they are but they look exactly like real guns.
