The dose makes the poison. Weed is not a panacea but it sure as hell isn't the devil. If you are getting F'd up you need to cut back the dose or switch to edibles; you don't get as functionally high, but it's more intense and lasts longer. Also know your weed: Indicas are more of a "body high" (Sleepy, pain reduction, relaxation, "vibes") where as Sativas are more of a "mental high" (mental "buzz," creativity, giggles, anxiety reduction) get a good hybrid that focuses more on the thing you want to fix. If you are in a funk, a Sativa dominant strain is what you need, if you are burnt out, you need an indica dominant one.

I'm a medicated ADHDer and I treat coffee like just yet another medication.

I was never a coffee drinker (or medicated in general) until my 40s. But now I literally prepare myself a cup of coffee in the morning and at lunch time, the same times I take my adderall. The combination is working great, even if it doesn't fix everything.

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 hours ago (4 children)

So glad I grew out of this. I still drink copious amounts of tea but any amount of weed is destructive.

I'll share something I posted a good decade ago on Reddit.

I used to smoke at least a joint a day sometimes multiple. I was consistently wake and bake outside of work. You know what weed does that no one wants to discuss? It makes you complacent. It sucks your drive to do anything. As a young person that's a horrible place to be. You are young, you should be taking risks and you should be striving for better.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 8 points 3 hours ago

I agree with you, and I think weed really helped me even though I'm not using any right now.

Sometimes it's extremely beneficial to be chemically pushed into a good mood and satisfied with just existing, when otherwise existence just seems to be misery and pain.

But it is not a permanent fix. It's a band-aid while you find more permanent ways to improve your life. But band-aids can hurt to take off when you're done with them.

[–] IPeaceInYourFace@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

It's the opposite for me. Weed gives me the motivation to do things.

[–] btsax@reddthat.com 6 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

I smoke two joints in the morning

[–] EditsHisComments@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

"I smoke two joints in the morning,

And I smoke two joints at night.

I smoke two joints, before I smoke two joints,

And then I smoke two more!"

[–] TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

you missed a few lines. "I smoke two joints in the afternoon

and it makes me feel alright.

I smoke two joint in times of peace,

and two in times of war"

I find weed is like alcohol, if it's a sometimes thing it's perfectly fine, but if it's something you're doing daily or every time you have a night to relax it's a problem.

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca -1 points 2 hours ago

Exactly. The danger is using it to escape your life. Life shouldn't need an escape. If you feel it does you have a larger more difficult conversation you need to have with yourself.

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

I can drink a pot of coffee and go right to bed. Now meth? Way more effective.

It's me, I'm in this meme. Those are still technically medications, just self-prescribed.

Remember, it's society that is dysfunctional. We're accommodating it's dysfunction for our own safety and security.

[–] areakode@riskeratspizza.com 29 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (3 children)

I love Adderall. But I didn't really feel right until I started using weed. The combination leaves me with a blank, calm mind that allows me to focus. You'll take weed from my cold, dead hands.

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

weed makes me anxious and panic. why? booze makes me puke. so ya. cheap date, i am.

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 11 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

I'm unfortunate because while weed is a great disassociative recreation for me and basically a part of my culture, it seriously suppresses my ability to think through complex issues in the way that's required for the technical work / hobbies I do, while adderal and other stimulant-type meds make me very tense and aggravated even at low doses. I've heard good things about clonadine though, non-stimulant adhd med, I've got plans to ask my doc about it.

[–] Almonds@mander.xyz 7 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I'm on clonidine because I have a multi-generational family history of aortic dissection. I was on vyvanse for about two years before my dad's aorta killed him. I've never been more on top of my life than when I was on a stimulant. But clonidine absolutely does help me focus, and it reduces the noise in my head, even if the effects are less profound than the stim.

I just added buproprion back into my daily meds, hoping that's going to help more with the executive dysfunction

[–] MonaySimpson@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

How many mg is of clonidine are people on?

[–] Almonds@mander.xyz 2 points 3 hours ago

I was on 2mg/day patch, but had to switch to pills because my skin hated the adhesive. For some reason the pills hit me harder so I'm on 0.5mg/2x/day at present

[–] obvs@lemmy.world 7 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I have an extended-release Ritalin prescription that I take every morning. It's amazing. Best stuff in the world.

But oh, man, adding an edible 2-3 times a week before bed leaves me SO much more able to function during the week.

Before those two, life was stressful as all hell.

But with those two things, I'm kicking ass and taking names all week long.

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

i’m on the same extended. do you feel “hollow” at abt 3pm? like your upper chest, jaw, sinuses are just … empty in a way that says “sleep needed but also probably not?”

[–] turtlesareneat@piefed.ca 7 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Actually self medication theory teaches us that some individuals will wind up choosing the correct medication, so yeah.

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

i’ve been on ritalin a while and recently also got rx’d 0.25 xanax for obv reasons. 5 pills a month. i kinda know it helps “de edge” anxiety, but also know it helps sleep. what i have trouble with is a “bad month” or two when i might need more just oddly anxious (ironically) to talk to dr abt it for fear of becoming addicted. :/

[–] 5ha99y@lemmus.org 1 points 5 hours ago

I do not drink coffee but take cannabinoids as ADD Medication as capsules. It is wonderful, if the right mix for cannabinoids has been found and got allowed as meds.

[–] SlugsOnToast@lemmus.org 1 points 5 hours ago

Mods! Personal info!

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 10 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Joke’s on you - I’m medicated and still do all that

[–] Schorsch@feddit.org 1 points 8 hours ago

Elvanse for getting up, weed for coming down. 👍

[–] BunScientist@lemmy.zip 10 points 11 hours ago (6 children)

Coffee doesn't seem to do anything to me and idk what that means

[–] Themosthighstrange@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

how old are you ? It could be because you are young

[–] exu@feditown.com 3 points 11 hours ago

It can also depend on your genes how heavily caffeine affects you. In my family my father, sister and I don't feel caffeine much but my mother reacts very strongly

[–] frostedtrailblazer@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

I’ve been experimenting with caffeine from different sources and at different times of the day. I feel the effects are more noticeable/different when I change things up.

So maybe black coffee isn’t going to have an effect on your focus/creativity, but some caffeinated tea or energy drink might have an effect.

Also, I feel that having a meal or a healthy snack with the caffeine matters as well to get a noticeable impact. So just drinking coffee in the morning, with nothing else, isn’t going to give me much of a boost as compared to if I had a meal or snack with it.

Coffee makes me sleepy. Weed makes me anxious. Focalin is like walking through a peaceful meadow with a god holding my hand and a muse whispering in my ear.

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

Sorry I couldn't find it, but caffeine and coffee can have opposite effects on a person. Iirc caffeine making you sleepy is a symptom of ADHD or autism(it could be something else entirely, it was a long time ago I read the article) but was a very strong indicator of the thing in the article. This assumes it wasn't a junk article, the acidity of the coffee apparently can have an effect on your metabolism depending on what else you put in it. Cinnamon apparently had a noticeable effect on the results.

Again apologies for not being able to locate it, but Ill update this if I do manage to find the one I remember. It was pre covid when I read it if that matters

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

Honestly both are fine as long as you stay within or below the average healthy limits (roughly 320mg/day for caffeine, weed might be less tested in that regard).

Just know your own limits and make sure you have water with you.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

320mg/day

3.2 cups a day, for anyone wonderin'

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 7 hours ago

Or a litre of Red Bull

[–] _fryerDan@sh.itjust.works 8 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

i switched my coffee for a B complex gummy in the AM and a B12+D after lunch. It's been working gangbusters for my mood. Probably too much B vitamins but idgaf

[–] runner_g@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 hours ago

vitamin b is water soluble so any excess is just getting peed out, so you're safe there. the ones you gotta look out for are a, d, and e. those are all fat should've and can build up inside you body and eventually cause issues

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 hours ago

Do they have caffeine too though? It seems like the B vitamin + caffeine combo is very common.

[–] Lupus108@sh.itjust.works 6 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Check whats in you B complex, if B6 is a high dosage you should check in with your doctor, prolonged intake of high B6 doses can cause minor nerve damage. While you're at it let them check your potassium levels, too much Vitamin D can lead to drastic Potassium levels which can cause health problems. At least in Germany the blood work for both is about 25€ and you tune your dose to what's safe :)

It's probably safe but some people metabolize those vitamins differently and the tests are quick and simple.

[–] DokPsy@lemmy.world 9 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I wish I lived in a developed nation where I could just "go get blood work done" for a nominal fee or be able to afford to care about long term effects instead of surviving day to day. Not sarcastic, I legit wish that

[–] Lupus108@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I feel for you, sometimes I forget to be appreciative for things like this.

The whole thing was as uncomplicated as it can be. I was at the doctor's for a regular checkup, during the little interview I mentioned I was taking vitamin d to alleviate the symptoms of almost no sunlight during the winter (working nights), she then explained the vitamin d - potassium relation and took some blood to check. I got the results a couple days later via email and that was that. As it was during a regular checkup it was also free of charge.

It's awesome to be in a place where I don't even have to actively seek out that kind of medical attention. I got an email reminding me of the checkup with some possible appointments, I clicked on one, two weeks later I mention the vitamin d in passing and it gets tested in a timely manner for free. Easy as that. I had bowel movements more complicated than that.

[–] MnemonicBump@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 7 hours ago

My father grew up in (West) Germany, and I studied German as a child (Hallo! Ich bin MnemonicBump und ich komme aus America woher kommst du?, etc, etc), and I really wanted to move to Hamburg when I was a teen. But it turns out that your country doesn't want an undereducated neurotic American, so alas, I'm stuck here.
