A place to share alternatives to popular online services that can be self-hosted without giving up privacy or locking you into a service you don't control.

If you are planning on running an open shell account server. I would look up joining the tildeverse as a member server.

When I read "open shell account server" I thought this meant anyone can get access programmatically. This sounded like a disaster.

But turns out, at least with the respect to this NetBSD specific offer, you have to send out an application.

Yeah a shell account is a standard term for getting a terminal access in a shared system going all the way back to mainframes.

Most universities at least in the US had a thing called a Sunsite that came with shell access sometimes.
