Bye

You crazies won and proved me wrong. The fediverse isn't worth saving after all.

Over the course of the last several days, I have received a constant stream of harassing messages, death threats, and threats of doxxing over DM, Matrix, Github, and Codeberg. All of it instigated and eggged on by another instance's top admin. This is unacceptable for all of the reasons in the world, and while I won't give you the personal satisfaction of having won, you've definitely proven me wrong about the fediverse being something that even can be saved from itself.

Even people around here I'd interacted with positively for years and had grown to respect because they seemed level headed and above the immature and sociopathic bullshit that dominates this platform showed their true selves. That completely shattered any and all illusions I had that this place has a hidden core of users that I should try to make more visible amongst all the rage, rage baiting, propaganda, harassment, rumor mongering, trolls, conspiracies, purity testing, and violent rhetoric.

Like many of the rational people before me who called this place home, I'm done with this place.

I tried to carve out a space where those people and other rougher edges were not drowning out niche communities and hobbies and where people who choose to use the platform to harass others were also out of sight, out of mind. Apparently only three people who aren't me actually want a place that's not just a circle-jerk of rage and hate. Thus sayeth the mob.

Then you have entire instances whose admins call for the death of others, harass other users, and lead harassment, brigading, and DARVO campaigns against those who dare call out their bullshit or decide to disassociate themselves and their work from them.

Lemmy.World was so close to doing the right thing after instance-that-will-not-be named's admins were calling for the death of LW's admins while spreading rumours and labeling others in such a way that painted them as targets for murder. All of that, mind you, with absoultey no evidence other than specuation and their own cooked-up conspiracies about modlog actions or taking and twisting things wildly out of context to fit their made-up narratives so they had someone to say they 'caught' and should be killed.

.world was on the precipice of doing the right thing and disaccociating themselves from that psychotic shit show, but silently dropped the issue and carried on as usual after wringing their hands for maybe two weeks.

"We have to worry about the optics or the politics of it." they probably said.

Bullshit.

I'm one person and have held my fucking ground, mostly with dignity and grace, in the heat of my own shitstorm of trying to disaccociate from the extremist elements of the fediverse. If I can stand up for what's right and deal with the blowback, so can you.

Fuck lemmy world's admin team for condoning that behavior and letting the human skidmark db0 DARVO his way out of the situation while brigading with his army of malcontents whom he wields like a cult leader. He knows exactly what he is doing, and you all continue to allow him to get away with it.

Nah, fuck this whole place. I've let too many things fall by the wayside IRL because of dealing with all this fediverse bullshit and trying to give it the slightest bit of polish both visually and atmospherically. Mythbusters may have proven that you can, in fact, polish a turd, but at the end of the day, it's still a shiny ball of shit.

For the few people left who didn't turn out to be psychotic, I'll think of you from time to time when recalling something you've posted or commented that genuinely made me laugh, made me think, or otherwise put a smile on my face or in my heart.

Everyone else, though, enjoy your toxic, xenophobic, knee-jerk-to-violence, purity-testing, and harassing-anyone-who-doesn't-fall-in-line cess pit. One day you, too, will do or say something that doesn't toe the line and you'll be right where I am.

P.S. Rimu, you owe me a beer. No one is talking about the Piefed vote quotas anymore, so you're welcome.

Everyone knows a cornerstone principle of the Fediverse was that there should be secret ban lists baked into the website's frontend that aligns to a single maintainer's ideology.

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 17 points 53 minutes ago (1 children)

As long as that maintainer is me. I can't trust anyone else to do it. But all you lemmings need to just blindly accept my ruling. Trust me bro.

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 10 points 48 minutes ago (1 children)

My blocklist is the only righteous blocklist.

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 minute ago

Uh.. Did you even look at mine, bro?

I find it unbelievable that he claimed to have handled himself with dignity and grace. It’s as if he’s incapable of acknowledging or addressing his wrongdoing. This behavior is almost sociopathic.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 13 points 57 minutes ago (1 children)

"Dignity and grace" apparently also meant going around defending his actions in the third person and insulting other people en masse using one of his alternate accounts.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 51 minutes ago

They're like fucking Scott Adams when he made a sockpuppet account on metafilter to glaze himself.

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 6 points 17 minutes ago (1 children)

Apparently handling himself with dignity and grace includes running a hidden script on his page so that visitors are unwittingly used to DDOS others.

Truly, this man has learned nothing from this experience.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 16 minutes ago

Not one fucking thing. Just keeps digging a hole deeper proving how much of a pile of shit they always were.

[–] chickenf622@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

If he was upfront with adding a block list, like a little message that pops up, and giving the user the option to opt out, then this would've been a non-issue. I can see some people wanting a curated block list to not have politic, rage subs, etc., but doing it in a hidden way will always leave a bad taste in my mouth.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 minutes ago

There was one in the fucking github, and a secret one.

[–] doeknius_gloek@discuss.tchncs.de 64 points 2 hours ago (4 children)

If everybody else is crazy but you, it's time to take a look in the mirror.

The fediverse isn't worth saving after all.

The god complex is unreal.

Lol imagine being such an egotistical prick that you write an entire multipage manifesto just to rage quit a tiny social network. No one gives a shit about your position on the matter, Patrick. It certainly lacks the depth or complexity required to necessitate that many words.

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 47 points 2 hours ago (9 children)

He pushed a shadowban list into his code, complained that everyone didn't like it (comments locked,) complained that no one liked his explanation (comments locked,) then ragequit because it's all a big conspiracy against him.

It's sad to see someone who seems to want to do the right thing this bad fall victim to some kind of savior complex where they completely fail to empathize with the people they want to save.

Leaving is the best course of action for him. I hope he has a chance to reflect on all this, since self reflection was clearly not a priority for him.

The Dubvee site is being used for crime. AdmiralPatrick has included JavaScript at the end of the page to send 1,000 requests per visit to dbzer0 to attempt to DDOS them.

This is illegal and extremist behaviour.

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 12 points 28 minutes ago

wait, for real?.... holyshit, you're right

I'll remove the link the original post.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 72 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 17 minutes ago) (8 children)

I read this earlier, some notes:

They're upset that people they thought would agree with this course of action "turned on them." There's clearly zero self reflection or consideration that maybe, just maybe, their actions were out of line and the community response was deserved (minus death threats, but I also don't really know if I believe that's true, because this person is obviously a lying, gaslighting asshat).

Everyone else, though, enjoy your toxic, xenophobic, knee-jerk-to-violence, purity-testing, and harassing-anyone-who-doesn’t-fall-in-line cess pit. One day you, too, will do or say something that doesn’t toe the line and you’ll be right where I am.

This idiot is whining about a self-inflicted wound, literally nobody gave a shit about what they said it's what they did.

Also note that they keep digging deeper into "I have to have the last word so I have to remove any and all ways for people to reply to me. I won, I know I did. They're just all out to get me." Just really pathetic conspiratorial thinking to justify the fact that they did something fucking idiotic and people took them to task for it.

Not one person would give a shit if they bitched about it on Lemmy, but "taking matters into their own hands" (as in the original post said "somebody had to!" because they had to don't you see? what a fucking lummox.) and not being open in an OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY.

EDIT: To really show the God Complex off they really should have ended with God's Final Message to His Creation:

Sorry for the inconvenience.

EDIT II: Holy shit guys, the've actively built a way to DDOS dbzer0 into the dubvee page. How can anyone take this fucking walking pile of shit seriously? They have a raging hate boner and they're just lazily jerking it.

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 51 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

This idiot is whining about a self-inflicted wound, literally nobody gave a shit about what they said it’s what they did.

Exactly. It's Lemmy. I've had unpopular takes, I've had shit takes and hot takes... I take them all in stride. Let the downvotes hit, it's fine.

What I didn't do is go "ohyea you don't agree with me? I'll show you!!" and then try to censor their voices by using whatever power I had.

[–] pentastarm@piefed.ca 1 points 15 minutes ago

I feel like down votes/up votes aren't, or weren't, supposed to be the focus here. Heck, on Voyager, I hide the vote numbers. Why are fake Internet points so important to people??

But yeah, dude didn't even consider that maybe it's them that fucked up. Just doubled down and noped out to preserve their ego.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 24 points 1 hour ago

Huh. I say whatever I think I should. Most of the time it's fine, people like it. Sometimes nobody cares. Sometimes people think I'm wrong.

That's just like, life, man.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 2 points 21 minutes ago

He banned WholesomeYuri by using a shadowban list and infecting other instances with it.

I don't see any harrassment or toxicity from that sub but I sure see it in his actions. I probably would have let this go already if he wasn't such a massive hypocrite.

[–] CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social 1 points 1 minute ago

Im inclined to believe that there were death-threats. I dont agree with what this person did here, but it should be considered that there is a certain segment of the population that has sufficiently poor consideration for others or emotional regulation that they will send death threats to people that make them angry, and, importantly, while this segment may be more or less common in some groups, that tendency in itself does not force a person to hold or not hold a given view (even ideologies or ethical systems that condemn death threats, because plenty of people out there are hypocritical). As such, these people can be expected to exist in any sufficiently large group, to include whatever groups you, I, or anyone else consider to be an "in-group". The tesseract dev got a lot of people mad, so, it would honestly surprise me if they didnt get a few such threats just given the sheer number of chances for one of the angry people to be of the sort to send them. If anything, Id expect a shittier person to be slightly more likely to get them just because people like that tend to do more things that make people mad at them, though this should not be taken as saying that people that get death threats are necessarily shitty people or that they're deserved.

That stuff aside, Ive had mixed feelings about this whole affair. I do agree that the hidden blacklist thing was way out of line, but I find that most of the criticism Ive seen doesnt really give the right reason (in my point of view) for why it was out of line. (Namely, Ive seen a lot of it framed as "this is censorship, its wrong to make software that intentionally does not display posts from specific people/places". I dont think I really like this argument, because I think a lot of the people making it havent really considered the implications of it thoroughly. Its generally considered acceptable for users to block other users for example, for moderators to ban users from a community, and for instances to defederate from other instances if they feel the need, and these things also prevent one seeing the posts of affected users, they just happen at a different layer than tesseract did. It is censorship, yes, but one cant expect to be entitled to the attention of others, theres simply too many people that have things to say, even important things, for it to be otherwise, nobody can possibly pay attention to everyone, nor is it healthy to try, so there must be systems in place that allow one to ignore those one doesnt want to see in favor of those one does.

The problem in my view is one of consent: if tesseract had made it known upfront that using it without disabling some default setting also opted the user into its developer's personal blocklist, then, well, it wouldnt be much different than when people on microblog platforms share blocklists with others, or when people choose an instance based on that instance's federation decisions. I would not personally have wanted to use it, as I have different ideas of what I want to block and not block, but I dont think that in theory it would have been unethical for it to exist in that state. However, while the dev themself seems to have thought that they had done enough to make this feature known, based on one of their responses to the controversy at least, they clearly did not, else the public response to the list's exposure would not have been outrage so much as "well yeah, thats what that program does, dont use it".

Part of this I think is that while moderation decisions are expected of an instance, they dont tend to be expected from alternate UI software, so, what would have qualified as "making it known upfront" would necessarily have to have been been very blatant. As it was, they certainly didnt meet that bar, and it was very plausible for a new user to find tesseract and end up using this guy's list without knowing about it. This isnt something Ive seen come up in the angry response nearly as often as just "he's blacklisted people that I dont think ought to have been, doesnt he know blocking people is bad, what an authoritarian!". Though of course, I havent seen every post about this whole deal so its possible that I simply have missed that criticism and just seen the angry memes.)

While Ill agree that self-reflection in their part would have been the most desirable outcome, I dont think it was ever really a realistic one. I doubt that any but a small fraction of the population would really be capable of anything but defensiveness when they have managed to anger thousands of strangers into yelling at them, its not a situation that humans are really well adapted for or handle well, given that the conditions we arose in would not have allowed for it nearly as easily as those of today do. As such, I think that just leaving in frustration, while not a satisfying resolution or a perfect one, is probably the best ending that could reasonably hoped for here. The other likely outcome would have been doubling down further and keeping the anger going, and by leaving there's at least a chance that they might reflect on what happened once emotions have a chance to die down.

We all know it was underhanded to deploy a secret list

Please don't be weird about it

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 16 points 1 hour ago

Yeah that's my take on it. It was a very weird thing to do on many levels. Especially doing it with the secret API call. The guy didn't understand the fediverse and wanted to mold it arbitrarily. Even if he had gone about it non-secretly it was very doomed to failure for a lot of reasons, but doing it secretly was making sure it would fail even harder. The whole idea of this platform is that you can block any number of instances/people/communities but trying to secretly do that on other people's behalf was never going to end well.

Having said all that, there is quite a bit of toxicity here that goes unchecked. But his idiotic way of dealing with it was never the right move.

As a former administrator of a top 100 sub, I've seen the absolute unhinged mod power tripping. My a large margin, mods were at least an equal threat to a community as the bad actors in the community.

For this reason, I've been a major proponent of a model where groups of users can generate and curate thier OWN collaboratively maintained ban lists, and users can with full visibility OPT IN to different filters.

As well, I think being able to "opt in" to users to see mod removed comments, or "opt out" of a mods comment removals would be cool. I think removed comments remain in the modlog and could be re-injected into what users see given appropriate "opt in" configuration.

Having a decentralized mechanism to manage and opt in to such lists would provide a way to combat power tripping at a grassroots level, as well as allowing broad filtering to let people choose thier experience.

This is all entirely predicated on it being:

A) with full auditable transparency

B) a clear opt-in mechanic

Hard disagreements between curators can easily be handled by forking the lists.

Long story short, I really like the idea of managed content suppression (and ideally un-supression) lists curated by regular users available in an opt-in manner because they act as a counterbalance mechanic to the outsized power that mods hold an INEVITABLY abuse.

But it's so fucking far from ethical to try and just sneak one in. I genuinely can not understand how much contempt for the agency of other human beings one must have to be able to rationalize such a thing.

[–] UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world 3 points 13 minutes ago

Normal people: I'll just subscribe to stuff I want to see

This guy: I'll build my own frontend and shadowban everything I hate - down to individual users I had even just one slightly unpleasant interaction with - for all its users 😡

Wth man. The thing instantly became a meme. Say 'whoopsy haha', make the banlist optional or remove it and tomorrow nobody gives a shit anymore...

I don't get people DMing the dev either tho. Especially stuff like death threats (if that is even true) because of random BS like this. It is one frontend for Lemmy. Surely one can do without it.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 1 points 18 minutes ago

They're not wrong.

But you don't force your will on others and try to control them and the things they share.

The Fediverse is pretty shit a lot of the time because it does attract a lot of life's leftovers, but we have our own block methods. It's unlikely to grow because of all the egoism and extremism of these losers, but that's for its natural path and it's a fun experiment in the meantime.
