At least penguin won't stole your data.

[–] PenguinVII@lemmy.zip 45 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Can confirm. I will not steal your data.

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Thank you for not stealing data.

[–] PenguinVII@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

You're welcome <3

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

I won't steal your data either.

I will, however, split your firewood.

The cloud provider service isn't running.

[–] Trex202@lemmy.world 41 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Just wait till you click and drag everything out of the One Drive folder onto your desktop, only to realize that the fucking desktop is also One Drive

[–] Pistachio@lemmy.zip 14 points 5 days ago

That was super annoying to realize.

[–] linkinkampf19@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

I work IT in an Apple-heavy environment, and this was the worst to find out. I can't recall if it's just OneDrive doing it or iCloud, but either way, makes it a bitch to backup resigned/terminated users' folders when I'm offline or whatever.

[–] autriyo@feddit.org 28 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It is time for penguin.

If you are hesitant, try it on an old machine first. (If you have one)

[–] manuremy@sopuli.xyz 15 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Help, I'm now using the old machine as my daily PC and negletting the slopmachine! It has been months..

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

And it probably feels faster than the slop machine

[–] manuremy@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 days ago

Scary fast. Like imagine, VLC (or anyt other application) opens when.. clicked open??

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Take the disk, plug it on the other machine, and delete any udev rule that you didn't create.

Done. Penguin on the faster machine.

[–] manuremy@sopuli.xyz 1 points 4 days ago

Bu-but what if the slow machine has worked out from just luck and in reality I am the stupid and will mess everything?? /overthinking

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 16 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Would you like any help picking a distro?

[–] muhyb@programming.dev 26 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (4 children)

Any criteria? If newbie, there is nothing wrong with Linux Mint. If experienced, still there is nothing wrong with Linux Mint.

Edit: Oh dang, you were offering help. Thanks, I'm good. Could be useful for anyone who seeks help though.

[–] mandolrain@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago (2 children)

For gaming or regular use? I've tried both Bazzite and CachyOS on my gaming laptop. Even if I wasn't a tinkerer I would choose CachyOS any day for gaming. Mint over Ubuntu for regular use. My 2 cents

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

You can game just fine on any distribution.

[–] PancakesCantKillMe@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (7 children)

You certainly can and I have several distros, but Cachy seems to be well suited with gaming. I am very sure I could tweak Mint to be comparable, but out of the box Cachy is a better gamer. One or two clicks and it’s all set.

I went from mint to cachy because it just works better for games. Mint is alright though.

Agree. Some are just better suited. I mean I use CachyOS for both gaming and regular use. I was thinking more "is this a workstation or gaming rig" sort of divide. CachyOS have kernel optimizations for gaming, but smarter men than me need to say if that actually has any major impact. And its bleeding edge so you're always 100% up to date, that can be both good and bad of course. For me it's good. The two-click setup to have everything installed and done for gaming doesn't hurt.

[–] muhyb@programming.dev 2 points 5 days ago

Actually for both. For gaming, both of Bazzite and Cachy is good. I mostly suggest Bazzite for newbies though if it's gaming related. Cachy is Arch and I don't suggest Arch to newbies.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 5 points 5 days ago

I encourage LMDE because it's not downstream from Ubuntu

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Mint. I installed it and stuff just worked.

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)
[–] 5318008@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago

I third Linux mint.

[–] TheGiantKorean@lemmy.today 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Hannah Montana Linux, obviously.

[–] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 2 points 4 days ago
[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Arch, obviously. What else would you choose?

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 5 points 5 days ago (3 children)

I think OP would prefer Nix

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Actually, they seem like a fine Temple OS candidate

[–] muhyb@programming.dev 5 points 5 days ago
[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 4 points 5 days ago

Nah, Gentoo or Exherbo. Maybe LFS.

[–] muhyb@programming.dev 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm kinda at the other side of the needle, I prefer Void myself.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I usually lose my stuff when i fall in to the void

Recently realized when I drag to one drive, it moves the file, but when dragging out it copies. Perfect blend of data loss and anti-customer practices.

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

Worse is when they ask me for a file in a onedrive folder I don't have access to

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 6 points 4 days ago
[–] kamen@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

If you only have the file in the cloud, it's your fault too.

[–] JigglySackles@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

MS just pushed their stupid OneDrive Photos as an update. I decided that's my last straw. It was one thing when I could toggle AI off, but this trying to connect all my pics to contacts etc is too far. I'm done. I just wish Tuta Drive was ready for daylight. Probably going to ride Mega until it is.

[–] kayzeekayzee@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

More like me looking for my entire Desktop

[–] Phantom_Feline17@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 days ago

And then you cant access your files because onedrive decided to update.

[–] AmyAye@nord.pub 5 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Indon't understand why the mobile app is so terrible. It crashes all the time. The image thumbnails never load. Its like, this is your purpose for existing. Why are you so bad at it?

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

This description is very similar to all versions of the teams app. It took them like 3 years to get it past what felt like a beta.

[–] JigglySackles@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Whenever I try to access the already established personal vault it asks me to set up a vault. If I go through the steps nothing changes. It's stupid AF.
