From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

And of course I'm installing Linux on it. Install went well, even the fingerprint sensor built in to the laptop works.

Mostly this will be a school and DND machine but always nice to have a functional laptop for whatever else I may need it for.

Not for the weak of heart. If they're not well introduced I may suggest an arch install by hand first. I wonder how like it'll take to compile FF on that Thinkpad.

Hell yea! Welcome to the Thinkpad Owners Club.

I have a L440, I was not able to find a T440 on a decent status. Solid laptop, enjoy!

Thinkpads are awesome. They aren't as good as they used to be, but they still work great for linux.

Why mint?

I use mint as my "TV room" OS. It's worked pretty well so far.

Mostly for compatibility and ease of use. I don't wanna fiddle with things if I don't have to. Wanted it to be stable. Ive also been thinking about switching to mint on my main machine so this is also kind of a test run. I tried mint years ago but it didn't work well for me back then.

I know, not the place for distro evangelism, but maybe give bazzite a whirl or some other immutable fedora variant, sorry, Mint is just Ubuntu Lite, if you really like it, go Debian Sid or something.

At least with an immutable you can distrro-hop with distrobox. Just saying.

HELL yeah! I have an E16 and it plays Factorio and other simple games (plus emulators) so it's perfect! And of course it's running Mint. :D

(simple graphically. Factorio is not simple. lol.)

My Thinkpad (X201) can't even play Terraria well but I love it. :)

T480, a gentelman and a scholar

Be careful of USB C ports. They are unreliable but absolutely required to charge.

Yeah, valid, but the BIOS upgrade (fwupd) that is normal with linux fixes it. Still, an issue to consider if buying second hand.

And can't be replaced. Sister has a t580 with a mangled USB c poet. Only one left to charge.

Cool! What model did you get? Despite the high prices right now, I'm also considering a new one right now, because my old one, which I love, does start to show its age a bit.

[–] notthebees@reddthat.com 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

T480 but I'm wondering 7th or 8th gen Intel. Both options were offered.

[–] Bluefruit@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Its 8th gen. Intel Core i5-8350U.

Well done, super capable 4 core device. I'm typing on a T580 now and it's still my low power machine (let's the desktop power chewer stay off most of the time) a decade+ later. Hunt down the dock, super nice, and replace the TN screen if that's what you have (horrible, but a sub$100 upgrade, it's lego, you can do it)

Enjoy, I have. Easily one of my best computer purchases.

I feel like an old ThinkPad is like a right of passage on Linux. Just about everyone I know who uses Linux has had one at some point or another.

just recently i've installed cachyos (after a few months of mint) on my t420 and it works really well
for instance the partial battery charging works (on mint you need to install extra stuff and configure via file, on cachy it's just part of the power settings)
but also generally i feel it's a bit quicker and prettier

[–] Bluefruit@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

What do you mean by partial battery charging? I noticed the battery readout isnt exactly accurate so far but I'm not sure if that's what you mean.

[–] rapchee@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

sorry maybe i phrased it wrong
instead of charging to 100% you can limit it to max 80% and only charge it from below 60% for example, it supposedly helps with the battery life
