No mention of thermals. My RX 6700XT is like a freaking space heater. I hope things have improved on the AMD side in that regard.

I purchased a 9070 along with a new PSU so I can’t be 100% on this, but my little computer room is much hotter than before. I may come to appreciate that in the coming months where I live but for now it’s a bit irksome.
It did but the major issue on 6000 series is the poor job the OEMs did with the cold plate design. My 6800 XT was able to hit 110C TJmax at 312W by default but by modding the plate on the same cooler I got it down to 90C at 400W. (100% RPM in all examples)
Meanwhile my 9070 XT at 374W rarely goes over 70C at around 50%RPM and at 100% it sits in mid 50C range (very, very loud at that stage though)
That's good to hear. I just recently ordered some of that phase change material for my 6700 XT. I'm hoping it's going to rein in the temps a bit. I've also seen my card hit 110°C tjunction which is decidedly not excellent.
Well, thermal performance in terms of silicon temperature is going to vary based on the heatsink of the card you get.
That’s going to be irrelevant to the heat introduced into the room - a larger heatsink will bring down silicon temperature, but you’re still moving the same amount of thermal energy.
What you are actually interested in is power efficiency, which is also missing from the article.
Based on average cards / without overclock: 5070 uses 250W 5070Ti is up to 300W 9070XT is around 305W
It stands to reason that a 9070XT will heat up your room more than the weaker 5070, but about the same as a comparable 5070Ti
I was shopping around for cards relatively recently so I have looked up some data on power consumption of these cards. 9070xts that rival 5070 tis are typically OC models in 350W territory. However these numbers aren't all that useful as they are only maximums. Real consumption will vary heavily from game to game and even setting to setting. For example in cyberpunk at 1440p with almost max settings with RT (but no path tracing) my 5070 ti is showing its consumption to be around 180W, if I turn on DLSS5 it goes to around 250W, still a bit from the 300W limit. I only saw it hitting the limit in furmark, but that is designed to do that. I'd expect similar behaviour from other cards, including AMD.
Thermals are definitely wonky and often needs tuning. My powercolor had atrocious thermals till I saw that it was oc-ed past the spec and runs 40% of available fan speed and throttle the clocks in a very questionable way to the spec values. It did work. But seeing 95C on hotspot is not really a thing I wanted to see. Now it's more or less fine in the current age of gpus. It's 83c max with spec-ed frequencies and better fan curve.
