From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Protest against the Omarchy/Omacom Foundation and the tech companies and executives funding far-right open source.

Oh Omarchy is "agentic" now? Is there a change they can point to that made it so?

Also the phrase "agentic Linux for the age of agents" makes my brain bleed.

[–] frmrm@peachpie.theatl.social 3 points 1 hour ago

Omarchy is a distro in the same way that I’m a fighter pilot because I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.

[–] r1veRRR@feddit.org 4 points 1 hour ago (3 children)

I have to ask: How exactly would someone support the fascist people just by using Omarchy? It costs nothing, there's no data collection, no subscription, nothing. It seems like a fucking purity test to not touch anything any possible fascist has ever touched.

[–] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 minutes ago

You're giving that fuckers mindshare. Just DON'T.

[–] mEEGal@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

This money is going into marketing and reputation-washing to make far-right politics look like normal open-source community building as well as attempts at centralization in FOSS.[24]

Protest if you like, but I'm going to say: Stop talking about Omarchy if you want to hurt it.

The people who like it are going to like it, the ones who don't won't, and screaming about it just brings it to the attention of more people who never would have heard about it.

Am I crazy for saying that DHH is a far-right plant and Omarchy is a plot to destroy FOSS from the inside?

[–] elixir_fan@lemmy.ml 0 points 11 minutes ago

DHH is far right, clearly, I'm not sure they have a plan for destroying FOSS, they seem to be trying to normalize their worldview (which is bad enough)

[–] Vendetta9076@sh.itjust.works -1 points 37 minutes ago

Yes. You are. You people are acting like Omanchy existing will bring down democracy as we know it. Its just a project. Sure its got some weird backing and DHH is a scumbag, but y'all need to calm the fuck down. Just ignore it. It will go away.

...The heck happened?

I've been under a rock for a bit.

Explain to me: why is there so much hype (and controversy) around some Hyperland Arch Linux config, within like a month? Is this some astroturfing thing?

[–] deathbird@mander.xyz 2 points 1 hour ago

Positive polarization: a lot of rich people are donating a lot of money to it, maybe (probably?) because the creator is well-connected and the OS makes lots of references to AI. Negative polarization: The creator has bad opinions, and the OS is very AI-forward.

Disclaimer: I only know bits of this story and am missing details.

Creator vibe codes configs, makes a "distro"

Creator says fairly fucked up things online, effectively a "dog whistle" gathering right aligned attention and money- and a quite a lot of it.

Begins hiring similarly minded people, claiming "the money will be spent" on the distro

All of it wreaks of BS.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Yeah. Kinda feels like OpenClaw and a few 'trends' before that.

[–] T4V0@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

Probably the digital ocean donation.

[–] madeofpendletonwool@lemmy.world 11 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Is The Primeagen also a garbage person? I've always thought of him as pretty down to earth and real.. But man he's been making them rounds with DHH lately and getting heavily involved in Omarchy

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago

and with ladybird, another well known fashware: https://drewdevault.com/weird-guys/

[–] Aatube@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

this website is so scarily designed (in a way that screams “scam” to me regardless of its content) that i doubt it will reach anybody but us

[–] yuki_gassen@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I get what u mean, but at the same time, there's plenty of "friendly," normal looking, and now probably AI generated, scam sites too. The colors are bold, but it's a simple, informative design. And if we, the ones who read and try to be vigilant of bad actors, are the only ones it can reach, so be it ig.

I think boycotting omarchy itself (easy to do) is a lot more effective than boycotting everything else.

Let these companies see their money go to waste because no one cares.

[–] Tolc@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

its fascinating to see libs cancelling people on basis of culture war... I also wanna cancel people on basis of class war

[–] karlhungus@lemmy.ca 1 points 25 minutes ago

This is a two for one deal then

[–] r3g3n3x@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

OK so this is a legit weakness of mine and it has to do with too many options. Creator aside what makes this distribution interesting and what other flavors resemble it? I’ve been trying for years to find the right flavor for me, I want something I update minimally and when I do update it doesn’t break. I’m using lmde note but I’ve had to wrangle it in and all I’m running on it is steam Nvidia gpu, yams, plex. I want to self host other apps but I’m terrified of the base install becoming unmanageable. I want this server to run games also.

[–] deathbird@mander.xyz 1 points 15 minutes ago

Bread on Penguins has a focus on minimalism and might have some interesting videos, though she herself uses dwm.

Nix as a system is meant to be highly replicable.

Me, I just try to make a flashback point before doing anything funky, but that's nothing remarkable to aspire to.

[–] MrKiosc@reddthat.com 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Omarchy is a essentially an Arch setup with Hyprland.

However, if you don't want frequent and possibly unstable updates, I'd suggest staying away from Arch in it's entirety and trying Fedora instead. It's got plenty of OoTB setups to choose from without having to mannualy install and configure them.

[–] elixir_fan@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 minutes ago

Rolling releases as a whole are a lot better these days, but I agree Fedora is excellent (and it helps to not need the AUR at all)

[–] sevenoverthree@lemmy.world 27 points 6 hours ago (3 children)

Aside from this dickhead and his shitty worldview, the OS is nothing more than a curated experience with what could be some fucking awful and dangerous AI implementations. I don't understand how people with any modicum of tech literacy wouldn't pass on this fucking thing INSTANTLY. I have always had mixed views on networkchuck, but to see him pumping this fucking thing up was pretty much my tipping point to writing him off completely.

And regarding DHH... I don't know how you could listen to this guy talk, and not get the Euroid sociopath vibes. Plus his little harem of fanboys are presumably gonna be jumping in at this point. It's just fucking gross. I passed on this months ago, and I will continue to pass.

[–] r1veRRR@feddit.org 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

How is this not straight up FUD? DHH is a very good developer, better than 90% of his detractors. Omarchy is popular for the same fucking reason that Linux was never the desktop of choice until Windows literally forced people to use it. It's a good default configuration of a collection of applications, put together in a cohesive, but opinionated way, by a person actually using the product AND wanting to be productive with it.

It's just a hyprland arch config bundle exactly the way Ubuntu is just a GNU Linux bundle. Sane people don't want to spend weeks configuring the most basic shit.

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago

Sane people don't want to spend weeks configuring the most basic shit.

theres plenty of distributions and flavours they can choose from, having a long history of being well maintained and without core maintainers and supporters having hostile views on the world.

[–] Glaedr304@lemmy.world 11 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Network chuck is someone I really liked when his channel was small, but once I realized he was posting videos that were 5 minutes long with a 1.5 minute ad plug, I was done. He always posts software that is just a free tier of something when there is probably a free and good option instead.

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 4 points 5 hours ago

Yeah, I'm on the same boat. Shit, I would even drink coffee at his pace when watching his videos. He's dropped real low in the lat year or 2.

Then there's Tom Lawrence for networking. Objective, each tool has it use case and he will push nothing, basically just voice hos opinions and why. Like if Louis Rossmann was all about networking and way less angry 🤣. Full disclosure, I fucking love Rossmann, my wife hates him.

[–] OR3X@lemmy.world 11 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I believe the ones pumping it up are the "AI bros" and "tech bros" AKA non-technical folks. These types don't actually have the skills or knowledge to put together something like this themselves so they rally around Omarchy because that work has already been done for them.

People use Brave even though Peter Thiel is one of its main investors. People use Brave even though it was created by Brendan Eich, a homophobe and Trump supporter

[–] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 minute ago

Nope, not everyone uses Brave

[–] ytg@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 hour ago

Brendan Eich, a homophobe and Trump supporter

Even worse, the creator of JavaScript
</s>

[–] bitwolf@sh.itjust.works 15 points 6 hours ago

I had the sense that the general consensus in the inner tech circles is that Brave is bad and Firefox is good.

Its the outer ring of the tech circles still privvy to Brave.
