From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Protest against the Omarchy/Omacom Foundation and the tech companies and executives funding far-right open source.

I am all on board with letting people know when open source is a bit too aligned with major companies or is somehow compromised.

I have no intent or need to use Omarchy.

This sites list of YouTubers to shun however is a bit too "purity test" for me. The reasons listed are, let's say extremely tepid in many cases.

I've never heard Jeff Geerling talk about any issue other than homelab stuff like hardware pricing and availability. His religious and personal views were not apparent to me at all.

I watched the Louis Rossmann video mentioned with the CO State Rep, and Louis was respectful and platformed this individuals commentary on the subject of privacy issues for a long time in the video. Generally Rossmann seems to criticize the living hell out of politicians left, right, and center.

I guess all I am saying is... Use whatever products you do or don't want to for your own reasons but, I disagree with the concept that I should brigade specific creators because they support Open Source but not 100% of my particular basket of other issues. We need Open Source to grow and need to reach out to diverse groups who can find value in it.

I will continue to listen to both Craft Computing Jeff (as far left as it is possible to be on social and gender issues) and Jeff Geerling (who is apparently conservative on these same issues) because I'm listening to them talk about homelab stuff, not telling me who to vote for etc.

Omarchy isn't even good. It shouldn't even be called a distro, it does nothing new. It's basically a script installer for arch

Both the Omarchy shilling and these attempts at smearing a lot of people with the least charitable interpretation possible of their words and actions feel incredibly artificial, so I'm going to do what is best for me and ignore both.

[–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 5 hours ago (6 children)

Congratulations, you've just managed to advertise the exact thing you oppose. I would likely have given zero attention or thought to Omarchy today if I hadn't seen this thread.

Also, I just read that "The Omarchy Doctrine" page; if someone seriously thinks that is a "fascist creed", then that is very interesting. About the person who thinks that. If someone could help me figure out what part of that is supposed to be outrageous or especially controversial, I'd appreciate any help!

I have no idea what I just read (since I know next to nothing about programming and linux) but then I read this:

"Believe in redemption, not permanent condemnation. People can be wrong and still be welcome back when they step away from harm. This is not about outrage or scolding, but rather attempting repair and healing for FOSS and the world."

...

"Believe in the redemption of middle aged nazis who know exactly what theyre doing gois , OK?! OK! Happy-Go-Lucky!"

[–] orc_princess@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I may be too charitable, but I imagine it has to do with how many people, such as colleagues we may have, can fall for this type of shit. We're all able to be reactionary and give in to bs, some of us just have more knowledge and/or more empathy so we're able to see through it much easier. So while DHH may not be redeemable, some dumbass on Twitter who defends DHH may still be redeemed, depending on the choices they make and how much harm they do or don't do along the way.

[–] UnequalExchange@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

ANY middle aged person should be able to understanf thst theyre supporting or spreading nazi bullshit.

Thats why we HAD to hang a couple propagandists during the Nuremburg Trials. If youre old enough to understand that youre supprting and spreading nazi bullshit? Youre old enough to recieve ALL the consequences of doing that.

[–] orc_princess@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 hours ago

I don't disagree

Hey, does anyone have good alternatives to CloudFlare to host my dns but also still safely self host things?

[–] akunohana@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 8 hours ago

Welcome, to the desert, of the real.

That is a fantastic page, well cited.

Also dang, I didn't realize Jeff Geerling was so conservative about homosexuality and abortion. Pretty disappointing.

Bit of a shock to see several people on there.

[–] akunohana@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 9 hours ago

Yeah. If there is somebody that was/is a part of my life, I vet them personally though, following both the links given in this page and "google" them separately. I want to make up my own mind.

How is it "open source" with all that bloatware garbage it has? There is nothing open source about it from what I saw.

[–] MissingGhost@lemmy.ml 10 points 10 hours ago (7 children)

What are some some good distributions on the other end? Is there like a communist, ally software distribution? Everything is political.

[–] ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net 9 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 49 minutes ago)

AntiX (based on Debian) is the only distro I know of that is developed by vocally anticapitalist leftist devs, even putting "proudly Anti-fascist" on their main page.

They also are one of the few distros to take an anti-LLM stance (though with Debian itself being pro-AI now, it remains to be seen how far they will go to avoid new LLM contributions made to the Debian base).

I mean, Redstar... I think that'd technically that'd be socialist, though.

More seriously, I think most of the non-fork distros don't tolerate that crap. Think Arch, Debian, Void, etc.

Something I'm keeping an eye on is this project. No clue what, if anything, will come of it.

Personally, I use Artix, and I'm considering NetBSD. I'm also consodering making my own Unix-like distro, possibly using the NetBSD kernel.

[–] ytg@sopuli.xyz 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Not really, just use something normal that's there to provide software. Fedora (but remember to install video codecs), Arch (but use the AUR with caution), Debian (if you're okay with using neolithic-age software), SUSE (European Fedora with AppArmor instead of SELinux), Void (but software availability can suffer).

The BSDs seem cool but it really depends on your hardware if you can run them. NixOS is awesome technology but has problematic business relations[^1] so you might want to take a look at GNU Guix.

[^1]: I'm not totally sure what's going on there. There was something about a community split between Nix (the package manager) and NixOS (the distro) but I don't remember which side is which. Using NixOS with Lix instead of Nix might be what you want.

[–] VeganCheesecake@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

SUSE is now on SELinux too.

[–] ytg@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 hours ago

Oh really? Why did they switch?

Yeah, don't use Omarchy, not sure why anyone would need to since there are versions with more stable support and a myriad of other free options for every niche. The site lists many great reasons not to use it, that is appreciated.

I don't use Cloudflare but I'll say that's probably the hardest service for people to leave because it's been the easiest to set up and forget.

Now my one gripe. The People to Avoid category is a weird omelette that put together multiple lists of people and brands them all as fascists to avoid. It's a set of massive purity test retcons that are not productive because it mixes overt bigots (Yarvin) and Silicon Valley grifters (Dorsey) with people that are living foundations of open source who are accused of odd behaviour.

Is rms going around harassing women? Cuz the last talk I watched of him he was battling cancer. (I have read the Stallman Report, but as far as I interpret it he is just trying to make sense of normally taboo topics by writing it out, even if the way he writes it out people feel harmed or creeped out about it because it doesn't match today's accepted norms.) I wouldn't ask him for dating advice but I wouldn't hesitate to ask him for computer advice. Louis Rossman has an opinion that I believe is wrong, but not one he holds strongly enough that he would discriminate or disrespect a customer over it or let it interfere with the goals of owning goods you buy.

Yes, question the questionable parts, but to avoid them altogether is excessive IMHO, each should be taken case-by-case.

Everyone, without exception, is flawed in certain ways. While there are people that make their flaws their whole identity, which you should avoid, for those who don't, you have accept to a certain degree to achieve solidarity and accomplish things bigger than themselves. That degree doesn't have to be charitable as me, but my opinion is that lists that make it seem all equally bad is disingenuous.

I think the best thing you can do is to ignore omarchy.

[–] sonstwas@sh.itjust.works 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Considering how often it's mentioned on Lemmy that's pretty hard tho...

[–] muzzle@lemmy.zip 8 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

That was my point. You are giving this project a lot of free visibility.

[–] warm@kbin.earth 2 points 6 hours ago

Fascism grows in silence, it should be combatted. If fascism is all people see, it becomes normalised. It wasn't defeated in the past by people doing nothing.

They passed a bunch on to Hyprland. Fuck all these transphobes and other bigoted right-wing assholes.

Actually, no. Fuck someone nice. Or don't; I'm not your mother.
