1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

    My dream phone:

    • UEFI (can boot any OS without 2 months of porting and a risk of bricking)
    • Repairable, but also upgradeable (thanks to UEFI)
    • Keyboard

While UEFI is better than the garbage we currently have it's still shit in comparison to proper firmware like OPAL

I had a Palm Pixi and loved it. Palm WebOS was an amazing OS that gave the industry a lot of what are considered standard features of phones today. You could also root it by just going into the settings and turning on developer mode.

Palmโ€™s acquisition by HP destroyed all of that. And to make matters worse, they sold WebOS to LG who now uses it to spy on people through their TVs.

Palm Pre 2 was the last great phone that lived. It was right after the HP acquisition and before the HP bullshit. I still have it. I wish it could handle modern networks.

Bring back blackberries and physical buttons and linux and hookers and cocaine.

And phones that don't shatter when you sneeze at them.

You sneeze at your phone? The cojones on this one

I bought a Fairphone 3 for the reparability but the damn thing just won't break! I don't think I've abused any phone as much as the FP but it just keeps chugging along without so much as a tear in the screen.

I think it's because of the frame reaching half a mm or so above the screen and the battery cover opening up when I drop it.

    [โ€“] JayDee@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

I got a Fairphone 4, thing's survived many a fall. It's a Shame that fairphone doesn't ship spare parts to the US, makes sourcing those parts much harder.

Fully expect my FP5 to do the full promised 10 years. Maybe a battery replacement eventually? But I am not kind to this phone and it does great

Fun fact: The pen is called a stylus. They were also used in ancient times to put marks in clay tablets.

No wonder I love my 1986 IBM keyboard so much.

The Model F and M were developed with the direct collaboration of professional typists, and were awarded the most comfortable typing experience. They are my dream board, and I want them.

    [โ€“] Anti_Iridium@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Sadly, Model F's are out of my price range, for now, but you can find model M's with adapters for less than 200.

Which I know is a lot, but I will be using at least a model M for the rest of my life.

The Palm Pre was damn right gorgeous, even came with a cheese knife built it!

Jokes aside, the Pre is one of the most beautiful phones I have ever seen.

even came with a cheese knife built it!

    Was it French?

    [โ€“] stoy@lemmy.zip 3 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Nah, it had a relatively sharp edge by the keyboard:

Palm didn't need an "app for that". It was equipped!

    [โ€“] Anti_Iridium@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

    Lmao, what a machine

Nokia getting Stephen Elop as CEO was fucking stupid

    [โ€“] lime@feddit.nu 33 points 1 day ago (1 children)

it was sabotage by microsoft to force them out of the market. they bought the lumia trademark after nokia gave up.

    [โ€“] stoy@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Yeah and remember, that happened at the same time as as Steve Ballmer at Microsoft retired and Satya Nadella took over, he was against the deal, and two years later the new company was shutdown.

From what I have read, the Nokia leadership needed a shake up when Elop was appointed CEO, I absolutely believe that a shake up was needed, but Elop was absolutely the wrong guy to deliver it.

A dream phone of mine would be the Nokia N950, it was a devkit for the Nokia N9, I played around with Meego for a bit, and it was brilliant, with an added keyboard it would have been awesome.

I have had plenty of mobile phones in my life:

    • Nokia 3330
    • Sony Ericsson K700i
    • Nokia 5110
    • Nokia 8210
    • Sony Ericsson K800i
    • Nokia 5800
    • Nokia E7
    • Nokia E72
    • Nokia Asha 300
    • Apple iPhone 5S
    • Apple iPhone 6S
    • Apple iPhone SE
    • Nokia 6.1
    • Apple iPhone 12 Mini
    • Apple iPhone 16e

The one phone I keep thinking of and missing the most is the E7.

Beautiful phone, brilliant keyboard, great quality, sightly too slippery.

It was my first big boy phone, I bought mine with my first paycheck, I bought it at Siba on Kungsgatan in Stockholm.

It got stolen less than a year later, probably pickpoketed on the train...

Still dislike Microsoft for cheaping out on the later generations Lumia. Cheaper displays so the 950 didnt support Glance. Wth?

I still miss my 920 tho. The Lumia 920 is only recently dethroned as my favorite (smart)phone of all time.

Microsoft messed up badly in Europe by completely and utterly ignoring the continent. Nokia managed to gain a larger marketshare than Apple in both Italy and France at the time. With meaningful marketshares in the rest of Europe.

Nokia was doing alright in several Asian countries Microsoft ignored as well.

After the take over, Microsoft kept all their resources forced on the US market, failed and in turn lost the European and Asian markets.

    GG.

Unless you're willing to spend serious โ‚ฌโ‚ฌโ‚ฌ, forget the N950.

But both the N900 and the N9 can be had for cheap on the used market (at least here in Finland lol) and are excellent examples for a true Linux phone that actually works.

The Sony k-series. I had the k850i. Such a cool phone but pressing the tiny stiff buttons hurt so much after a while.

Well, webOS is alive and well... It just became the shittiest spy-TV ad-ridden cancer in existence at the hands of LG...

Waited nearly 8 minutes only for the request to "time out". I have never had a poor experience with Anubis and, in fact, they've all been night and day better than anything else out there, until today.

    [โ€“] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

Huh, I didn't think this one would go over Anubis at all. I'll take a look at it.

It's just a meme GIF from the Godfather where he says "look how they massacred my boy."

Not sure. But that gif is perfect lolol! Thank you for describing it!
