The active regulatory body discovered it, and as it wasn't inspected, the rule is immediate Class I.

It's because Star Meat Delivery had assumed the deregulation progress was further along than it actually was and thought Trump's USDA would let them get away with it.
If we had proper regulation, there would not have been 167000lbs of this shit to recall.
This is not 'oh, the regulation works or it doesn't', humans like to do that a lot for some reason, this whole 'it's either one thing or the other'. Nuance and gradients are a real thing. This would not have happened in a robust regulatory environment. The one we have operates on shoe strings.

The internet says the US sells appoximately 200 million pounds of meat a day based on per capital numbers. This is a big number, but drop in the bucket.
That said, they put a false inspection number on it and the recall happened because they got caught. My guess is mis labeling and not being inspected is probably more common than we know.

The average person in the US eats ~330g of meat per day. multiplied by 350 million people is ~11.5 billion grams, which is around 254 million pounds of meat per day. This recall is about 0.066% of the daily meat consumption in the US.

The FDA link in the article lists the product labels affected. I thinks it’s all labeled “A&D Foods” and has “EST. 1363” on the label. It all went to a distributor in Georgia.
Don't want to guit-trip anyone but being critical of what you eat is good for everyone. Eating less meat is good for the planet and your health, even if the meat is not contaminated. If you don't like CNN you can find very similar content from other sources by using a search engine of your choice.
