And 30+ year old people who enjoyed the good times while they lasted and are now nostalgic?

[–] Guilvareux@feddit.uk 16 points 5 hours ago

We’re definitely here too

Finally someone who at least knows the difference between the WWW and the Internet...

Lemmy feels very gen z ish though.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 11 points 6 hours ago (7 children)

That was so unexpected that I misread it and made a joke about gen x. We seem that young to you?

I would say I like it here, imo the format and overall technology is perfect. I am always impressed by how little battery and data voyager uses compared to all the other bloated apps on my phone.

Having said that, I am disappointed that even without feeds and algorithms, it has become a lot more rage inducing and depressing then I would have hoped for.

There is just so many things that affect my life in a negative way being shown here, can’t a guy get a little ignorant bliss about nerdy topics? Or long, deep discussions comparing the philosophies of niche hobbies?

[–] Baguette@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Yea tbh it's kinda a struggle to find hobby communities

Turns out finding a niche in an already niche community is kinda hard

I have so many filters just to block depressing news... Also to block strange hive mind posts about beans etc.

That's one thing you can do here that you (no longer) can on Reddit

Unfortunately as a younger gen z i need to supplement my Fediversing with traditional social media unless i want to have humor of a previous generation and get obliterated at school. I wish there was a greater variety of people on here

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 29 points 7 hours ago

Nah, join the dark side. There will soon be a day when you can't understand the young ones anyway. Why not today?

[–] mirshafie@europe.pub 24 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Bring them here, we promise not to be awkward!

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 25 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Speak for yourself I promise to be awkward as daisy dukes on a crusty old fart with droopy balls.

I'm not yet even close to 40, yet I still believe I am one of the "people who built the World Wide Web", in the sense that I've been posting to it for more than 20 years (there are still old forum posts online that I wrote at the age of 10), i.e. before it was something the general public did a lot.

I'm on the one hand proud of how much it has grown and how much more popular it has become; and on the other hand, worried that this has caused governments around the world to pay a lot more attention to it and limit our freedom on it through age verification laws and similar...

Cool. Can I buy some of your blood?

[–] squirrel@cake.kobel.fyi 10 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

This isn't the corporate web, donate blood, don't sell it.

Hello, it’s me, Al Gore

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 191 points 11 hours ago (25 children)

there’s 2 kinds of people on fedi:

40 year olds who remember the good ol days of the interwebs

16 year old queer shitposters who got tired of getting called every slur imaginable on other networks

both are into linux

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago

I'm a Luddite who discovered this shit inadvertently, and still doesn't actually understand how any of it works

But you're correct in that I'm pushing 50

[–] kuerbiskernoel@feddit.org 14 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Third kind (the only people I know from real life who use the fediverse): Tech/math enthusiasts, usually grad students (who are also into linux)

[–] djdarren@piefed.social 18 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I have to use Windows at work now, which is ass.

Anyway, I had a question about how to achieve something in Powershell the other day, so I asked it on Mastodon. Got basically nothing in response.

Every time I ask how to do something in Linux I get swamped with responses.

Make of that what you will.

Not quite. I went here initially because I got permabanned on reddit. But I now realize reddit is a shithole so I like it here. I do wish there were more active niche communities and I really wish you could comment while on VPN, which you cant for some reason

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 12 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (3 children)

Why can't you comment while on a VPN? I'm on a VPN right now and I'm commenting.

Also, I hate to tell you this, but reddit is the way it is because it's so popular. If we had the amount of people necessary to make niche communities thrive, it would be just like reddit. Well, at least as far as the people posting and so on. There wouldn't be any of the weird administrative stuff because it's run much differently. But the fact that the system is just like reddit's means that it attracts the same kinds of people and encourages the same kind of behavior.

[–] NightFantom@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 hours ago

Looks like your shit just works, while it's not like that in the whole world

[–] Glitchvid@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

Reddit has additionally deteriorated because it's pushing more and more algorithmic content surfacing. The home page there is now closer to a facebook feed than the old default 'Hot' sorting. You also get pushed random subs and posts at the bottom of pages. Comments are also buried or surfaced depending on some algorithm not directly tied to upvotes.

Plus a ton of the users are now coming from mobile and are "app first".

[–] Flower@sh.itjust.works 10 points 6 hours ago

Just like you can only find the specialty stores in the cities, where you'll also find parking and traffic problems
