Not 40, but also don't want my thoughts and comments to be an income stream for a for-profit organization, whether that be by selling and/or training an LLM using my data for profit or contributing to an inescapable network effect that can be increasingly monetized by various means.

The modern social media platform is not designed to foster positive interactions, but rather to maximize shareholder value.

I mean, you're fooling yourself if you don't believe Lemmy has been scrapped by a thousand crawlers by now.

I'm more paranoid about how many accounts are bots than about some data aggregator getting my dumbshit hot takes as training data.

Equal access for all is still better than one company controlling access to my content for the purposes of monetization.

Only it’s being overrun by a bunch of teenaged idealists that insult anyone that disagrees with them.

I don't regret it. I only regret letting the corporations stake their claim without greater pushback.

Wait I'm considered young here even though I'm in my late 30s?

[–] Feidry@sh.itjust.works 18 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

You are but a whelpling. Welcome.

[–] GratefullyGodless@lemmy.world 10 points 11 hours ago

Yup, some of us are old enough to call the 40 and 50 year olds "young whippersnappers".

I'm in this image and I don't like it

Does it count as building the web if I worked manufacturing the AOL disks that plagued everyone's mailbox?

[–] squirrel@cake.kobel.fyi 4 points 8 hours ago

I learned the first bits of HTML by editing an index.html file from an AOL disk and customizing it to be my own homepage. We didn't even had home internet back then. So yeah, it counts.

HOW DO YOU KKOW MY AGE?! fuck. i'm in.

[–] TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 13 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

we wrote the rules of the internet, and while some were In-jokes about life on 4Chan, a lot of them are just plain truisms. But the language makes Gen Z have the buttpains, so here we are...

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

If I could enforce just one of the old rules it would be LURK MOAR.

[–] OnyxRex@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I didn't build it, but I was raised by it. I was so hopeful when I was younger.

[–] banazir@lemmy.ml 5 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I thought humanity's problem was lack of access to information. The Internet proved I was catastrophically mistaken. The real world beat that idealistic youth to submission.

Honestly really glad, I'm tired of reading teenager opinions everywhere on the Internet

[–] Monument@piefed.world 38 points 14 hours ago (4 children)

Joke’s on you: my opinions are just as bad.
