From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Nazis back Nazis... More at 11

[–] solarspark@lemmy.ml 10 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

lol some bigot loser 'we're not political! 'who never used Linux before getting all this money and surprise he has little understanding, hence still a shitty release.

I tried it for a few weeks unfortunately just so i can see the trash first hand. and it is buggy, not intuitive to use, full of shit webapps for crap platforms and worthless because all of that agentic crap that you'd want can be easily done on a base arch install.

After Chis Titus video, I am only going to ransack the quickshell configs. I really need some references on how to structure it. Don't worry, I also read some other configs and I am not aiming for ultimate eyecandy.

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

What happened or what information was the issue in that said video? I stopped watching Chris Titus for a long time (when he ditched Linux and went back to Windows, its years ago now).

[–] TruePe4rl@lemmy.ml 2 points 42 minutes ago* (last edited 40 minutes ago)

Oh, he just made a point, that for him, it is worth to take some of its ideas and implement them into his own config. And I kinda feel the same about my sway setup.

Basically, it has cool stuff and you can read the configs and take what you like.

video in question

Just gonna shamelessly leave these two paragraphs out of the website of my own distro here.

What a goddamn joke

seema like concentrated effort to steer a specific linux ~~desktop~~ distribution in a certain direction

There we go, I corrected your typos for you.

While I agree Linux is inherently anti fragile and can survive enshittification by corporate goons, that amount of money that this dot file Linux installer will have a heavy effect on what projects get funded and which ones are left to their own.

There's a nice donate page on the archlinux site and let me guess how much they'll get from this foundation when afaik the arch team had turned down whatever partnership the dot file installer guy wanted. Should come anyways no strings attached right? Considering they're funding hyprland. So using arch as a base would imply they would fund them no strings attached.... Right? lol

[–] Jarmund@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 20 hours ago

Not gonna happen with torvalds at the wheel (pun intended)

But once the penguin caretaker goes to another userland, then who knows?

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 1 points 13 hours ago

I use Arch*, BTW.

^*Arch=EndeavourOS^

I hate the phrase "X$ in compute" so much. What does that even mean? It could mean a 1.5 million dollar value worth of donated time on one of their servers, or it could mean a hardware donation, or it could be a cash donation that is earmarked for server upgrades/chip purchases. Ever since AI took off it's become such a common turn of phrase to use "compute" like this. As if the amount of money spent tells you anything useful about the amount of things they can "compute" now. Costs are so variable and spread out across many different areas that it changes day by day, and by which vendor you use, or what part of the world you are in, or all kinds of other things.

Maybe I'm just behind the times and it has some specific meaning now I'm not aware of. Either way it annoys me.

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Compute means CPU/GPU time and has meant it for ages

[–] XiJinpingStanAccount@lemmy.ml 3 points 13 hours ago

So what does "1.5mil$ in CPU/GPU time" mean then? It doesn't make sense. That's not a standardized unit of time. Are we talking tokens like with AI? Whatever SpaceX's going rate is to use their servers? Some other commercial service? That's why I don't like it being used like this. It would be like me saying I am donating 1.5 million dollars of "food" to the homless. Like that's great right, but what the fuck do I mean by food? I could be giving them rice and beans, caviar, or anything in between. Meal vouchers to mcdonalds, or working with soup kitchens. It's just vague.

Its almost as if DHH and those transphobes over at Hyprland(not to mention Lunduke, Luke Smith, Distrotube, and the various cadre of right wing little bissh boys on YouTube) all forgot about Linus Torvalds.

A screenshot of a comment from Linus Torvalds which reads: "I think you might want to make sure you don’t follow me. Because your “woke communist propaganda” comment makes me think you’re a moron of the first order. I strongly suspect I am one of those “woke communists” you worry about. But you probably couldn’t actually explain what either of those words actually mean, could you? I’m a card-carrying atheist, I think a woman’s right to choose is very important, I think that “well regulated militia” means that guns should be carefully licensed and not just randomly given to any moron with a pulse, and I couldn’t care less if you decided to dress up in the “wrong” clothes or decided you’d rather live your life without feeling tied to whatever plumbing you were born with. And dammit, if that all makes me “woke”, then I think anybody who uses that word as a pejorative is a f*cking disgrace to the human race. So please just unfollow me right now."

As far as I'm concerned Linux is for the left. But heck when an ideology like fascism is born out of grifting off left wing ideology (i.e. See Mussolini's socialist/anarchist father), the right can just appropriate whatever they want...but they'll still always be little bissh boys to me.

[–] iByteABit@lemmy.ml 21 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Probably the coolest comment Linus ever made

[–] elixir_fan@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Sounds like he may be a socially progressive liberal.

[–] hirihit640@sh.itjust.works 8 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

wouldn't even go that far, the examples he mentioned are pretty uncontroversial at this point

He lives in the US though so should we be using European or American terms? In American terms he absolutely is a liberal, based on all the stances mentioned, whereas in European terms, liberal more or less means capitalist

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

He's one of the few cool high profile Europeans to move here!

How much compute does dot-files actually need...? /shrug

[–] digdilem@lemmy.ml 123 points 1 day ago (3 children)

That confirms it, Omarchy is the official operating system of bigots.

[–] bluesquid0741b@aussie.zone 13 points 21 hours ago

Always has been

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 1 points 13 hours ago

I thought Omarchy is an OS for Ai agents, not for humans. Why would any human use Omarchy then?

fucking called it when the first batch of millions started rolling in. not that it was too difficult to see. disappointing to see many open source folks being like "who cares?", which is just the head-in-sand reaction i'm used to encountering when talking about fascist politics with locals. it seems to me that the users who are ready to welcome large amounts of institutional capital into open source projects don't understand that it comes with strings attached. maybe they think more money = more eye candy = growing userbase = better video game support on linux? idk, hate to see fascism creep into every aspect of my personal interests

[–] non_burglar@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Let's check the Venn diagram...

[–] BestBouclettes@jlai.lu 104 points 1 day ago (4 children)

God fucking damit, so many open source projects struggle for money and yet, that fascist jackass' dot file distro gets all the support. That's maddening...

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 46 points 1 day ago

Considering where the support is coming from.... Are you surprised?

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 32 points 1 day ago

Nazis doing Nazi things.

[–] LewdLemon@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 day ago

Seriously though... I wouldn't want fascists' money anywhere near my pet distros, regardless of volume. As they say: "He who pays the piper calls the tune."

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It’s money laundering. Thats all.

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 1 points 14 hours ago

How do you think that's supposed to work lol, if they can simply pay him (DHH) money, that's already clean money.

They're just funding fellow millionaire fascists to take over a space that's been historically left-wing

[–] davel@lemmy.ml 63 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Because of course it would.

I swear the move to replace the GNU ecosystem with Rust tooling has more to do with a corporate EEE push to remove all libre licensing than with memory safety or anything else.

[–] SmokeInFog@midwest.social 31 points 1 day ago

Nailed it here, imo

[–] davel@lemmy.ml 28 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Which is very frustrating, because retiring C & C++ is long overdue IMO, but for reasons unknown to me, the Rust community is strongly against copyleft licensing.

[–] qaz@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

I think the fact it's statically linked plays a role. Common licences like the LGPL won't work, leaving the MPL or the less similar but more commonly known MIT license

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

The rust community prefers freedom as in free to do whatever you want, copyleft has a different definition of freedom.

[–] davel@lemmy.ml 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Thank you, Captain Obvious. The Rust community prefers that corporations have the freedom to embrace, extent, and extinguish open source contributions. Or maybe they don’t prefer it so much as they’re ignorant of it.

isn't it SpaceXSI now 🤣

[–] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

$1.5 million in compute = actual expense for Elmo is zero as Elmo's datacenter is massively overprovisioned and is currently leasing compute to all their competitors

But of course Elmo needs to send a message to the world: "please avoid this distro"
