Heyho, I had a great idea for a birthday gift, but due to circumstances have to rethink quickly and now I am trying to create a collection of many small fancy things as the giftee (aka the person that receives the gift) in the past introduced Miracle Berrys into our group (they make sour taste sweet). So anything unusual and interesting counts.

So currently I have on my list:

  • Butterfly Pea Tea (changes color when in contact with acid; lemon)
  • Pop Rocks (exploding powder)

What else could be interesting? Germany if that matters.

Kala namak salt is funny, tastes like egg.

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 hours ago

Interesting. Will take a look!

Candied jalapeños are fun. Sweet but still spicy!

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 4 points 10 hours ago

Sounds great and apparently my local supermarket has them!

[–] MelonYellow@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Some kind of spicy cayenne chocolate would be unexpected

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 hours ago

Do you have a specific one to recommend? I once tried https://www.lindt.de/excellence-chili-100g but it didn't convince me at all (spiciness was very low)

First heard of the fruit from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAhhexB-p9A Not sure if they are easy to get here, but I will take a look. (my initial comment still stands though)

It should be possible to buy frozen durian in Germany, in asian supermarkets. Not sure if that's an option.

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 6 points 23 hours ago

Such evil is not allowed in here! Begone!

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Durian candy is legit good

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 3 points 10 hours ago

Fair enough. I have revisited my response in a second comment.

Mentos and Cola.

This will be quite messy though.

Sichuan peppercorn / prickly ash! Just chew on one and it makes your mouth go brrrrr

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 hours ago

Sounds interesting! I will look if I can find it

[–] WhiteRabbit@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago

And afterwards, tell them to try a sip of water. Makes the water taste acrid. Such a trip lol

[–] WhiteRabbit@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Buzz buttons! I tried it once as a cocktail garnish. They’re these edible yellow flowers that give a numbing, tingling (not spicy) pop rocks sensation. Rare to see, but you can plant them yourself or buy some online.

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 1 points 10 hours ago

Uh, they look hard to get :/

[–] bl4kers@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you're down for a recipe...

  1. Get a couple packs of blueberries
  2. Pour them in a bowl
  3. Add a couple tablespoons of cocoa powder
  4. Add cayenne pepper (twice as much as you think you should)
  5. Stir with a spoon to combine
  6. Use the same spoon to eat (do NOT eat with your hands)

Should taste equal parts spicy and sweet. If too spicy, dilute with more cocoa powder or blueberries.

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 1 points 10 hours ago

I want to avoid making something fresh even though I like the idea in general. I don't know when they will be able to eat it.

Sadly no alcohol - and pretty hard to get

[–] idealotus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Get the hard candies from Jeppsons directly! No alcohol and all the bad taste.

[–] huquad@lemmy.ml 2 points 19 hours ago

Hell yeah brother

[–] Nefara@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

My contribution would be candied hibiscus flowers in syrup. They can be used as a garnish on a dessert like a tart or a nice sorbet, but they're perfectly fine to eat on their own. The flower has a subtle warm berry-like flavor. You don't eat the syrup directly but you can mix it in drinks or serve it with desserts.

I don't know how much of a chocolate lover the person in question is, but if they like it a fun thing to try is a sampler of single origin chocolates. It can be fun to taste the difference between chocolates from different regions and see how one is fruity, another is smokey, another is earthy etc.

Is Alcohol an option?

The strong beer "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier". Not very well known, super special.

Next idea: Find a very good Italian who has "Canolli".

It is a special sweet bakery, originally from Sicily. In Germany, it needs a place with a reputation in order to get really good ones. They should be made on the same day.

What about the Hot Ones wing flight? I know Germans think salt is spicy, so this would be a trip!

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 1 points 10 hours ago

Cool idea. Sadly I had that one last year :P

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Go for a spabierengang with your favourite brewskis and watch the sunset from a mountain

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 hours ago

Sadly Alcohol is not an option

[–] moody@lemmings.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

See if you can find brined peppercorns.

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

sounds interesting! Any idea where to find those? Guess they aren't buyable in regular supermarket

[–] moody@lemmings.world 1 points 1 day ago

Supermarkets around me all have them. They're usually close to the capers.

As an American, most of what I would suggest would be things you regularly have access to.
