I personally wouldn’t bet against the Dutch and their hate for water.

Just another dam bro! Just another dam I swear!

(I also wouldn’t bet against tbh)

mother nature is WAY more powerful than anything humankind can do.

yeah but we're talking about the Dutch here

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 3 points 16 hours ago

if guess if they can make the slave trade endure for centuries, they can make anything happen. lol

They've been reclaiming land from the sea for centuries. That's what all the dykes and windmills are for.

Let's hope the PRC continues its incredible progress on green energy, combatting desertification, and lowering emissions per capita and in total.

It will be nice, but it's no where near fast enough to be successful in avoiding what is pictured above

It does appear to be accelerating. Watching the next Five Year Plan will be telling of the direction China intends to take for 2026-2030.

Unfortunately the CO2 already in the atmosphere will continue to warm the earth for several decades even if we stop all further emissions.

We'll need to massively deploy technology that can suck CO2, trap it in something like silicate, and bury it deep underground.

Or shift to a diet with less meat so land can be restored (this will suck some CO2 into biomass and soil).

Already working on becoming vegan personally. Given that the PRC has developed tech to combat desertification, I do think they are more likely to invent tech to combat CO2 in the atmosphere.

[–] emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

We actually have the tech - you just need to manufacture a CO2 scrubbing material and pass lots and lots of air through it. The hard part is the energy - you shouldn't be producing even more CO2 in the process. In other words, getting enough solar / nuclear power, and funding to actually build the thing.

A cheaper alternative would be to pump nitrate and phosphate into some remote ocean, so as to cause an algal bloom. When the algae die, they sink to the bottom of the ocean, and take the carbon with them. But the local ecosystem will be fucked up in all sorts of ways.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 3 points 20 hours ago

Nice! If energy is the limiting factor, then that's actually a good thing, the PRC is rapidly improving solar production and nuclear energy, as well as rapidly expanding it. I just hope the global oil industry gets phased out in favor of cheap solar and nuclear.

Imagine how much more we'll pollute the ocean when the sea floods our cities and pick up all the liquid chemicals in all the cars.

[–] ecoenginefutures@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago

Unironically philosopher Michael Marder argues for the use of the word “dump”, since contamination, pollution and etc contain reference to pristine state that doesn’t exist anymore. So, yeah, the dump would increase
