But isn't half the point of cutting edge tech news to echo hype louder and louder until investors pile in?

Agreed.
On the other hand thats how the internet worked since forever. I started to just ignore HL3 "leaks" 15 years ago. If you care about a certain topic its pretty easy to rule out the one or two annoying "leakers" which made "leaking" their profession. I would appreciate it if somebody else would prefilter this shit. But tbh i can manage on myself. Like its annoying that especially these posts gain a lot traction because they play with the "needs" and "wants" of the general populace. But sometimes its just easier to put on your big boy/girl shoes on and just deal with it. Best part: dealing with it is just a mental :thumbs up: and then forgetting about it.
I mean, you're 1000% correct, but sometimes if you're lucky bringing it up with mods is enough for them to go "y'know what? Yeah, I agree"
I agree with this in principle. I think a tag like "rumor" might be useful as a first step? Escalate if it becomes more of a problem.
It may also be worth differentiating between a rumor and a rumor. A rumor of AMD coming out with XYZ at CES is different from "some random website is claiming that HL3 is days away from being announced"
Yeah fair, maybe "rumour" and "hearsay"
or at least have a rule to clearly label them as unsubstantiated
I agree with the sentiment but I don't know that I've really noticed it as an issue here
