Remember when Apple used to fight surveillance?

Now they're jumping to comply with rules that don't even exist yet.

App stores and mobile operating systems are not covered by the Online Safety Act, but Ofcom, the UK media and telecoms regulator, welcomed Apple’s move on Wednesday.

But this can be used as an argument for the OS to provide a simple and anonymous “yes, this user is an adult” flag instead of having to scan your face or ID on each and every website or for every browser app.

Also, Apple is doing TV, Music, Podcasts, so they probably need the age check for one of those.

I have my doubts (see responses for similar arguments about systemd adding an age field).

  • Authoritarian governments are not appeased by corporations that bend over backwards for them, and
  • Apple is in the business of making money, not keeping people private.

Apple have been at the forefront of keeping people private for a long time, don’t know what you’ve been doing.

Apple wont do that

Please, no more of this dystopian 1984 nightmare. I don't want it.

I mean what would you expect from a kingdom, other than to be primitively stupid?

[–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Plenty of countries are constitutional monarchies (e.g. the Scandinavian countries, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain), that nowadays has relatively little to do with what any of their government policies are... plenty of republics do plenty of primitively stupid things too...

[–] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 3 points 3 weeks ago

Eh. Just because a primitively stupid thing has company does not make it more acceptable.

I would much rather my phone simply tell every service and website that I am over 18 than have to provide proof to every one of those sites and services.

This is pretty much the best way that we could hope for age verification to be done, and unfortunately left wing governments around the world are adamant on bringing in age verification to everything to make controlling their citizens easier.
