Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure game set on an all-new alien world. It is the next chapter in the Subnautica universe, developed by Unknown Worlds.

Driven from your home by ongoing conflict, Alterra offers you the chance at a new life. But as the colony ship CICADA shepherds you and your fellow Pioneers to your new home, something goes awry. The ship’s AI insists that your mission should continue. Stranded and faced with near-insurmountable odds, you must do everything in your power to survive. The future of humanity on this world is in your hands.

So what's the status of the whole Publisher vs Developer drama?

A big mess. Last I heard, Krafton has been steadily losing, the founders are back in control of their company (Unknown Worlds) and they are likely on track to get their big payout owed to them since the payout window has been extended by the court. Their payout is based on sales numbers (which they are extremely confident they will reach very quickly), but they can't get those sales numbers until it hits Early Access so there's actually something for people to buy, and Krafton's play was apparently to try to prevent and delay Early Access until after the payout window. So now, in theory, they've had more time to work on it, it will be more polished, and they still have plenty of time to get their payout once it hits Early Access, so theoretically it's all but guaranteed now.

Usually I wait till close to release before buying into early access but I guess in order to stick it to a scummy publisher I'll have to make an exception.

I'm so incredibly hype for this game. I beat both the original and subzero on hardcore, which was an accomplishment for me. I could not be more pleased that they've reached an agreement where I can express my displeasure with Krafton by buying the game.

The game engine itself was by far the most dangerous thing in hardcore mode 😆 But I got lucky and finished it too and it was a hell of a rush. More about caution and planning than mechanical skill like a lot of games.

Subnautica helped me vanquish (control, really) my thalassophobia and was a beautiful experience all around. This looks like they've made the emerged parts of the world a little more daring/alien than the first. Very excited to see how it looks in glorious UE5.

I'm told it's great in VR. Never tried it, but if the steam frame ever appears. . .

[–] cynar@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It's absolutely gorgeous in VR. Unfortunately it's almost unplayable for most people. The motion sickness is... impressive. I managed to work my way up to about 10 minutes of swimming, before I gave up trying to adapt.

It's on my list to do, when the steam frame comes out.

FYI, the best VR game I've found is "super hot VR".

I throw Outer Wilds as best VR game into the ring. Floating in space or fall into a black hole is something else...

Super Hot VR is SO much fun in VR. Definitely a must play.

Yea this is THE game I'd like to experience in VR. In immersion, so to say. Wearing fins, feet dipped in a bowl of water.

Me too... in video games lol. Real water can be like a thousand times more murky, and wreckage can be full of dangerous rust and things to get your equipment tangled on 😞

But anyway yeah it became one of my very favorite games and I even beat it on hardcore mode. The cyclops only tried to yeet my character once or twice lol

[–] MilkToast@breakfast.haus 11 points 4 days ago

Hell yeah! Bet it looks hype. Still not buying till full release though

Whats the odds of co-op?

I appreciate that the vibe of 1 is being stranded all alone and its all eery and shit, but I'm not playing any more craft-em-up survival games by myself.

It will be co-op, 1-4 players.

You won't be locked out of any gameplay loops as a solo player, but you can bring in a few friends at any time.
