They've done that for decades. I never got a refund.
If we're being pedantic, that's still being hacked. Social engineering is, like, the #1 source of hacking.
Is this even social engineering?

No one got tricked or pressured, the helldesk employee was just following established procedure. They did exactly what they were supposed to do.
It’s just that Sony’s procedures are laughably insecure.
Ok, at first I thought it was a typo, but is “helldesk” intentional? Like “Micro$oft”, because they’re the only company that’s bad because they seek money?
Helldesk comes from the BOFH stories.
It’s because working for customer support is absolute hell.

I fucking hate Sony. I've a PlayStation user and customer for almost 20 years, and once I contacted EA support to help me recover my old EA Account, their support asked me an old transaction ID since it seems ok to be, is not something bad and IT'S ACTUALLY LISTED ON THE OFFICIAL EA SITE THAT THE THINGS THEY ASK FOR TO RECOVER YOUR ACCOUNT. I did it, I tried, but the EA support (and without offense) is 99.9% Indian people probably underpayed who doesn't even know how to type on English, no joke or trying to offense, it is literally like that, and in the end they just tell you "I'm so sorry, keep trying later" and I give up my old EA Account. But one random day I was checking my PS Account and suddendly I was playing the most shitty games ever made by humanity: Roblox and FIFA, games which I wouldn't ever touch with a stick.
I tried contacting Sony, but is literally just a fucking IA that unless you tell them: "My vital organs are connected to my console and if the hacker's turn it off I would die" they simply don't fucking care. And once you can contact real humans (whom by the way, they work like 2 hours a day, and take 5 hours to reach to them, if you don't answer them in 0.01 seconds they left the chat, and DON'T WORK WEEKENDS (or 1 day, don't remember) and holidays, as if the bad people wouldn't either).
Once you can get to contact a real person, the only fucking thing that they do is that they probably have this big keyboard given by Sony which only have two buttons who say: "I'm sorry but I can't help you further than this." and "Tell me everything, and I'm here to help and I'll do everything to help you", the only fucking thing that they do is: Resetting your password without you asking them, and hit the two buttons that I talked as hard as they can as if hitting those buttons can help them reach a new orgasm like that. (My theory is that the keyboard is connected a an gigantic dildo in their asses, and each button gives different kinds of pleasures, probably if you hit the "I'm here to help" and then the "I can't help you" in sequence, they give them more pleasure).
And even so that doesn't help, because the fucking problem ARE THEY AND THEY STUPID IA, if you can get my PlayStation ID and and receipt ID, you JUST need to contact Sony or they AI, tell them that you need to change your password, and instead of fucking sending a email to the person who own the verify that this is the real user, they just simply, as is sounds, give you via chat the fucking link to reset your password, and that way they simply keep entering to your account eternally, without even needing to login into your PS Account, they give you the link in the anonymous chat.
Sorry for the long post, without any proof or super grammar, I don't tend to do this, but I been dealing with this shit for too long (since November of last year) and Sony doesn't care. I'm not longer a PlayStation user since years ago, but I have spent thousand of dollars in that account and I don't want to simply delete it because Sony doesn't care.

One reason why you should still care about your account is, that it could be misused to scam your friends. If you really don't care about an account, the best you can do is to delete it.
