I want something simple that works for my family and myself. We used Discord, but for when they pull their next stunt, I want to be ready and having something working already.

What do you all use?

I use varying IRC servers based on my mood, as I don't use it with other people.

For general IRC chatting I use weechat + tmux on libera.

As mentioned before, matrix might be a better solution for you. If you really want IRC, I can send you my latest rather stable setup.

I'll check out the Matrix, and if alright I can get back to you about other ideas?

Thelounge works easily. Are you sure that IRC is the right choice for a family though? Have you looked into Matrix?

I at times have, I am just trying to look at different options in general, if that makes sense

Ergochat in combination with Goguma, Halloy and maybe ObsidianIRC. But I would also recommend you look into other options than IRC for a family chat.

My recommendation would be XMPP with https://snikket.org/
