I would purposefully put the package at the tree

Anyone could have put that box there

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 6 hours ago

Absolutely defeating the point of those boxes by advertising what's in it and where it is to everyone who happens by.

Knowing how stupid people can be, the amount of instructions is justified.

Honestly I fully expect someone to not understand.

The last place I lived, the owners had set up a delivery box since they're getting deliveries nearly every day, some of them large.

It was a nice box, insulated and waterproof, clearly marked as "DELIVERIES"

They still had drivers dropping things off at the door to their garage, their detached garage, front door, and once back door.

So they made a sign that had DELIVERIES with an arrow on the opposite side of the driveway, and put logo stickers for every delivery company they could think of on the box itself.

Still had things dropped off at the door.

Eventually they put up a gate without a fence across the driveway, painted the bin bright orange, left it next to the gate.... And had a couple drivers walk all the way around the gate and down the driveway to the front door. At least until they put up a fence, then they had a few deliveries marked "undeliverable" until they called the companies about it.

Never underestimate what a delivery driver who is rushed by their company can miss while trying not to get fired for taking too long to deliver something.

They couldve just put the box under the sign on the left...

I like the solution in the picture. This way, whether the delivery person looks to the left or right of the road, there is a sign to help guide them. If they focus on the right, they see the box. If they focus on the left, they see the sign telling them to direct their focus on the right.

If there was instead just the sign/box both on the left as you suggest, a delivery person may focus on the right and miss it completely.

I have a box for deliveries next to my garage. I put a big sign on the lid of the box so you can see it when you walk up the driveway, but not from the street. Still, some of my deliveries get taken to the front door despite my instructions I entered into their app.

This is a great idea. I wonder if some delivery persons are approaching from the other side of the house and walking across the yard. I think I might see if I can order a custom door mat with an arrow pointing towards the box...

Good point yeah

"I had already placed the box before putting up the sign! Duh."

lol ... my favourite is Halloween ... a few years ago, I put up a paper sign on the door with an arrow pointing to the 'DOOR BELL' ... I even added extra instructions 'RING DOORBELL FOR CANDY' .... and at one point I even put a sign lower to the ground so that kids could read it. My wife laughed at me and said that people weren't that stupid and they'll see the large bright glowing button of the doorbell and use it to get our attention.

About three quarters of the people - whether they be kids or adults or both - knocked loudly on the door and ignored all the signs. I even had some miffed adults look at me weird for taking too long because I didn't hear them pounding on the door.

For the past few Halloweens, I gave up and now I just sit by the door and wait for people to arrive and greet them before they even have a chance to knock.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Are doorbells uncommon in your area? In Germany everyone uses them so it's the obvious thing to look for, no one knocks on halloween/st. Martins

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

They are common up here in northern Ontario in Canada ... but it's just a habit with people up here ... everyone prefers using the back door and when you get there, you knock on the door. The front door is more or less decorative and seldom used and usually used only for days like Halloween or mail package deliveries (and package carriers are better as they almost always use door bell)

I dress up like a scarecrow and hold the candy in my lap so when people try to take the whole bowl, I can scare the bejesus outta them.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

I've often thought of doing that ... but around here, enough people do that that it isn't that scary for people any more ... my idea was to create three or four identical scarecrows or dressed up characters and sit in as one of them.

I work in public transportation. There's a certain segment, I'd say a solid 40-50% of people, are effectively illiterate. Maybe they can read, but I have yet to see any evidence of it.

[–] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

Yeah, people are obnoxiously oblivious.

[–] CallMeAl@piefed.zip 23 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Sorry we missed you!

Unacceptable. This self-imposed inconvenience will make up the entirety of my argument for dismantling the postal service in favor of Amazon.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

They need to take some bright red rope and make a circle around the box.

This post has inspired me

Imagine if all the boxes on your taxes were physical IRL boxes, and to do your taxes you’d run from one to the other like a big scavenger hunt?

That would be awesome! I should run for office.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 13 hours ago

You put all the money into the boxes that represent the tax brackets. You are timed. It gets recorded and airs on TV, to prove to the IRS that you did your taxes. A second show called Audit! follows up on all the people who got their numbers wrong

[–] slothrop@lemmy.ca 4 points 13 hours ago

I need this. I have a parcel box at the front of the driveway, yet most delivery drivers miss it and challenge my German Shepherd at the top of the steps instead.
