Welcome to the largest gaming community on Lemmy! Discussion for all kinds of games. Video games, tabletop games, card games etc.

Rules

1. Submissions have to be related to games

Video games, tabletop, or otherwise. Posts not related to games will be deleted.

This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.

We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.

3. No excessive self-promotion

Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history.

This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.

4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts

This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you're submitting before posting to see if it's already been posted.

We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW

Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed.

No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don't share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.

We don't want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

So they are intentionally spending more to design a second version without user replaceable batteries, that really is hostile design.

Fuck Nintendo.

[–] Stanley_Pain@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 hour ago

That's Nintendo in a nutshell tbh.

Agreed.

But it also proves that you need government intervention for companies to make the best products for consumers.

Product > profit

On one hand I agree but on the other hand this EU version will probably have less battery capacity or even processing power as a trade-off. It has to fit in the same case and with the same components after all.

But you can always carry a second battery and be at 100 percent instantly like the old days (2012)

All they have to do is not permanently glue the battery on. It otherwise would sit in a perfectly flush compartment that doesn't even need to be changed or would require a different battery.

The only difficult part of replacing the battery in the current model is the fucking adhesive which makes this whole thing that much worse. If anything, it would be slightly cheaper to produce since they wouldn't need to buy glue.

I assume there are contracts to build the old design. Changing or breaking the contract will probably make it even more expensive for Nintendo. Also there are lot of in stock presumably. I wouldn't rule out a future version of the Switch 2 in other regions, with replaceable batteries. Maybe for a future Switch 2 OLED and Mini.

I know, I give Nintendo too much of benefit of doubt... bad habbit of me. I don't even like Nintendo (anymore).

Even if we ignore the manufacturing and material costs, changing over the entire production infrastructure (from injection molding to electronics and final assembly) is insanely expensive and would effectively shut down production until all of the verification runs are done. This way they can continue production for the unaffected regions.

I'm not covering for Nintendo (they can burn in a fire for all I care), but I have worked in an electronics factory and knew some of the process engineers: any kind of change is a massive pain in the ass downstream.

EU's tech regulation is so much better than in other regions of the world. I'm currently working on changing my consumption over to European tech and software products where I can.

They really just hate their users, huh.

"OK, I'll comply... But just to you. Fuck everyone else, scumbags..."

Cool. I'll keep emulating.
