1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

or logging the animals I see in nature or something
iNaturalist is a great way to contribute in this way:
https://www.inaturalist.org/
Just be sure to go into your settings and change the default license to something less restrictive (or whatever you're comfortable with).
It was introduced to me by a zoologist that specializes in Reptiles and I know it's a tool that researchers (or anyone depending on the license of the observation) can use.
I love it, too bad I degoogled my phone years ago and I'm not googling back.
You don't need Google to contribute.
While they do have an app on the Play store, you can also just use the website.
I'll take another look at the website then, first time I missed it.
iNaturalist was already mentioned.
Zooniverse is a great citizen science project.
*I see you said no campus stuff, but look at local colleges for drug studies or brain imaging studies. There's usually some criteria they need participants to meet- diagnosed with (x) or no history of (y)- but some are quick and compensate with cash.
First time I'm hearing about this one, but Zooniverse looks awesome. Definitely a lot of projects in there to satisfy the interests of any individual.
It's a lot of fun, and there are wildly different projects for different tastes. I like the transcription projects, and any fish/mollusk surveys.
Probably donate to your local food bank more often.
So I thought my town did not have any food pantries, but I went to look it up anyways because of your comment. Oh wow was I wrong. Donation made partially because of your comment!
